Would a prussik knot be good to hold the block to the bridle? You could position it anywhere on the bridle as needed and once pressure is applied it will not slip.
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 17 дней назад
I do not think the prussik knot is the best, as you stated…. When under pressure it will tighten around the bridle. You really want the block to be able to slide port to starboard. The friction of the prussik knot may not allow it after a while.

Great tips, Lee. Will you please do a video on race starts, up wind. (preferably, light wind) Also, what nuance tips do you know to point higher?
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
To point higher, you must first go FAST!, maybe even easing the sail a little... when the speed rises, then one can go into point mode by trimming in the main. Ill work on the starting video!

Why wouldn't you just detach the bridle at one end and thread the block on to it? Then no knots to fail. Thanks for all the video Lee! I really have learned a lot from them. You should try a Tillertote sometime. 🐠
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
I dint think the bridle will fit around the block, at least the swivel one…. If you used the non-swivel, then the block openings will be facing port and starboard creating the twist. You idelly want the openings facing for and aft!

I went to a 2:1 since I found my Sunfish more tiring in heavy wind than my Hobie! I have a Harken mini block shackled to a spring clip that slides on the dyneema traveler. Also I use a clove hitch on my sheet about 6" behind the boom block (instead of tying it into the boom block eyelet), so the line runs free. It prevents the "double-X" too. This business about having to use 40 year old parts to be class legal is just silly. Should be "equivalent" parts.
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
Excellent! I agree about the blocks and parts, it is just back when some countries supposedly had harder times getting certain parts or the third party parts may be more expensive. But for the 2:1?, a small harken block or equivalent should be allowed here.

Man you are the best. I just bought a harken block now will be buying a racelight...I also cannot find a rudder cheek that i saw was the new style when you raced in italy. Can you? Still class legal? If you are sailing LAYC in nj in jun. I will definitely seek you out to thank you for all the amazing content PERSONALLY...Stay well Sail fast

Ok. But how am I holding the tiller during all of this two-handed hauling? :-)
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
Hold the tiller in your palm, and ring and pinky fingers…. This will free up your thumb, index and middle fingers to grab the sheet. It is required to have a universal tiller joint on your tiller and extension.
@ymcaclimb
@ymcaclimb 3 месяца назад
I have an 18” bungee hooked into each bridle eyelet with a single wrap around the tiller. It’s a great tiller tamer.

Sunfish Direct will have the class legal things like these blocks? I noticed you use a bridle without a center loop. Is a bridle with a center loop better? You can trim the main in closer when going up wind. Correct?
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
Sunfish Direct, dinghy shop, vela sails and many other dealers should have the parts. the center loop is not better for over all conditions... the centerloop is good if the wind is light all the time. you can trim in more to centerline with a centerloop, but when the wind picks up, you want the boom slightly off centerline, especially on starboard tack.
@Happ465
@Happ465 3 месяца назад
@@LeeSideSailing Understand. Can the bridles be easily changed out by putting clips on them? Do they need to be purchased from a dealer or can I make my own?

In the video I mentioned tying the end if the mainsheet to the ebd if the hiking strap…. That helps prevent the mess if spaghetti in the cockpit!

Do we have a clarification on the rules as they pertain to how the extra block is attached to the bridle and how the mainsheet is attached to the boom? Looking at rule 3.7.1 it doesn't specifically mention how the block is allowed to be attached to the bridle however it does say that the mainsheet shall be tied to the eye strap of the aft boom block. Going back to pictures from the PanAm games and the Worlds, it looked like the officials were allowing the main to be tied to the boom rather than the eye strap which I would think is the safer way to do it.
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
I spoke to the measurer and the mainsheet may be tied around the boom in the vicinity of the aft boom block. You also may use line to attach the block to the bridle. To be class legal it must be a block that was builder supplied st one point or another in the history of Sunfish. Thanks!
@captschark
@captschark 3 месяца назад
@@LeeSideSailing Thanks for the clarification Lee. I appreciate it. If we can use a soft shackle to attach the block I wonder if they would consider allowing a soft shackle to attach the mainsheet to the boom in the future? It makes sense from a safety standpoint but I completely understand the rule about the mainsheet being a single strand of a singular line.
@sailinmon

I liked that you demonstrated how to haul in the mainsheet quickly using both arms. Can you comment on how to do that while continuing to steer with the tiller extension, or better yet, create another video that demonstrates your technique for that?

Been doing that for years. I'm just using a traveller block off a Laser, tho not class legal, I suppose.

Lee what diameter sheet would you recommend?
@LeeSideSailing
@LeeSideSailing 3 месяца назад
That is personal preference…. Andy beeckman who just we ne the masters will change to a slight bigger than a 1/4”- so he will go about 7mm, BUT that is of individual preference. Go as thin as you can to reduce friction, but you stull need to be able to hold it
