Becky. You have taught me so much! My freezer is full right now because of you. I used to make 1 lasagna at a time. Can you believe that? Right now there are 6 lasagnas in my freezer. Couple of pasta bakes. Marinated chicken. 4 apple crumbles (not sure if you call them crumbles - or if it's what you guys mean when you say cobbler). There's loads more in there but I wont bore you with the whole list. Last night I made dinner for my family and I made enough so that we could all have leftovers today and managed to portion out & freeze 24 dinners for my 1 year old. The next meal I cook will also let me freeze a similar amount of food for baby! Problem is my regular freezer is full and now I have to convince my hubby that we need one in the garden shed!!! 😂 Thank you so much for your sweet videos!!!

For any tomatoes and peppers you can get a larger soil-block form that will make a hole the same size of your current size blocks, so when the plants need more soil, you can put them in the center of the larger block to continue growing.

Hey there … I just want to say a HUGE thank you to Becky and the folks at GreenStalk for this wonderful promotional offer on their 5-tier planters! I just purchased two of them! I found this channel a couple months ago and have marathoned my way through all of the videos since then. My husband and I just moved in October from our big-city home in Indiana to our 5-acre little dream retirement home in northern Minnesota, and I’m so excited to become honest to goodness homesteaders! I am soooooo motivated by Becky and Josh’s homesteading journey, and I’ve learned so much about cooking and bulk-buying and storage and having chickens … and now I’m going to try and be a gardener! Well, that is if winter ever ends and I can actually explore my new acreage! 😂 Becky has taught me so much already, and I’m so excited to have found out about the GreenStalks!! Thank you so much for your honest, fun, and real perspective on homestead life! So looking forward to sharing the journey 💖💖💖

Seems like there should be an easier way for me to do that, but I just haven’t figured that out yet…lol. Love all of your videos Becky!! Thank you, Becky

Hey Becky, I'm also a new gardener and 3 years ago I planted lavender and rosemary from seed and my understanding is both types of seeds need a cold period in the fridge kept moist (I used paper towels on plates kept inside ziplock bags) for a few weeks before they will germinate. Edited: I should have added that I was successful and thrilled as I now have all my lavender and rosemary plants growing and thriving in a south facing window in my office. I live in zone 2b so there's no way these plants will be perennial way up north here but I love them and so far so good. This was my hobby to reduce stress at the beginning of 2020, and it was truly a God send.

And after you start your seeds and have mature plants you can make cuttings. I made 150 cuttings a few years ago as a "test" and left it on my front porch all winter and the next spring I had 150 little lavender plants! All of them made it through the winter and were ready to be planted in the spring. Needless to say, I gave many away and sold some others on marketplace.

Hi Becky! Brandy here, and I have a suggestion. I grew up on farming lands and we had a terrible time with deer. Our neighborhood farmers did as well. It got to the point some would pipe Loud music and lights on their crops every night trying to keep them all out. You have a HUGE investment in your garden. The deer families that you may be feeding can easily eat and or ruin your whole beds in one evening. If it were me, I would definitely invest in your fencing before all the planting and work goes into your raised beds. Just a suggestion, I'd be heartbroken with you if they ruin all your hard work. All the deer know is to go where the easy food sources are, and the herd's can be many in numbers! Love watching all your progress girl.❤

Hey Becky! I hope you dont mind a few tips from a horticultural farmer! I think the soilblocker is a grear idea! If you want to spend your time using in in the long term, i would suggest getting a smaller soil block size, for things that do not require as much soil such as salads, beets etc. It will save loads of soil and space for you! I little thing to mention, I noticed your habbit of pouring out a large amount of seeds into your palm before sowing. That is not a great practice, because if you have any moisture in your hands, then the seeds might absorb them, start germinating and when you put them back in the packet, they will die. This means that their germination rate goes down quite a lot for future years. Another tip for rosmary and lavender: their seeds are reeealy hard to germinate (which is why they are so cheap!) then take years to properly establish. You might be better going an buying a small rosmary and lavender plant, then taking cuttings from them to make new plants. It is sooo much easier, it is how nurseries propagate them. Even better, if you know anyone with some plants in their garden, then you can go and get some cutting for free! Hope this helps and as always, thank you for your videos and enthusiasm!

I think you're going to need a "web tray". It's an open tray that fits in a 1020 tray ( you may have to double check that). This way your soil block don't sit in water when you bottom water.

Is it really necessary to plant seeds in these tiny containers then transplant to garden? I know everyone does this but as I’m elderly & only do mostly container gardening in my 1, 3, & 5 gallon black plant containers recycled from trees & shrubs I’ve bought thru the years, I skip all the extra transplanting & sow seeds directly into these bigger containers from the start- why do extra 😂work ? My back can’t take it anymore ! 😢 everything grows great & I save on seeds - I use only 1 or 2 seeds per container- none of these plucking out the strongest seedlings & throwing the rest out - can’t afford the waste as I’m retired, on limited budget - swap seeds with friends & neighbors for more variety as well!😊

I just love my girls so much, raised them from babies and spoil them rotten. I know death is part of "farm" life, but it still hurts to lose one. 😢

Hey Becky! Here in Sweden, many people sow vegetables and flowers outside in the winter or early spring.some seeds can be sown on frozen soil and sprinkled with a little potting soil. Either put in plastic bags with lids, add some snow and then put the lid on and put everything outside and it will germinate at the right temperature. You can also put the plastic change in a larger plastic tray that you have drilled a few holes in. Then it will be like a small greenhouse. the snow melts, the temperature gets higher and then you have to water a little if necessary and lighten the lid a little. Try, it is nice that you not need to have all seeds inside and its groing very well Best Regards Helene in Sweden

I tried something similar this year, I put seeds in bottom of milk jugs and set out while some snow still sits here and there. I confess I got the directions from a different uTuber.

Thank you, Helene, for the tip! I’ve heard this method described as “winter sowing”. I’ve not t tried it yet, (probably because we don’t really have winter, where I live) but I will, this year, with the stock (flowers) seed I found at Baker Creek. Happy gardening! Sabine

Becky, have you found a way to automatically water your Greenstalk planters? I have 2. But, I am thinking about not using them. When it gets hot in NJ it needs to be watered 3x a day. It becomes quite a hassle in 90+ humid weather.

Aaaaack!! 12:08 am on the 17th!! Edit: recovered enough to finish. I bought 1 Greenstalk last year when Greenstalk gave Becky a code for us. I love it. Not at all sure how everything has withstood the insane weather we've had since I got it. Currently has broccoli in all stages, beautiful lettuces, green onions, a couple of experimental carrots, exquisite pansies that made it through last year's brutal heat, I think that's all. So sorry I missed being able to pick up several more.

I was wondering about the petunia seeds also so I looked it up on Google. It stated that they are very very tiny and very dust like. They even had an exclamation point at the end of that sentence probably to emphasize that they truly look like dust. That's probably why it's easier just to buy the starts that are already growing.

You might be pleasantly surprised by echinacea, I grew mine from Dollar Store seed and had magnificent blooms the first year, and sixteen years later they're still going strong. Ditto Shasta Daisies and many other flowers.BTW, last year I heard many complaining about poor germination from those purchasing expensive seeds. I've always had fabulous germination from DS ones, like nearly 100%, and, like you, I only put one seed per tray. Fabulous video Becky. Like you gardening and the kitchen are my happy places. Thanks for the inspiration!

Curious why you plant so many varieties of tomatoes. I literally plant 1 type of Roma, cherry and normal ones (these constantly change whilst I endeavour to find my favourite. Granted I live in Australia in the tropics so I can grow pretty well all year round on many things. Just curious. No judgement just wanting to understand a different perspective.

Hello Becky, So glad to see you got more of the green stalks. I have 4 of the Australian brand Mr Stacky and I love mine. I actually want at least another 4. I’m gardening in pots as we are renting. As an Australian just to let you know most eucalyptus will propagate better soon Bec the seeds have been heated. Normally a good fire will get them started. When I worked in Lancare we used to boil them for a minute or two to get them to start germinating. However there are many ways. Some ppl will kind of pan fry for a few seconds to also get them to come out of dormancy. Follow the packet obviously but if you have issues maybe try a few of those suggestions. Having said that you may be about to do that as I saw what seeds you got and saying it can be difficult and thought I’d better comment now before I forgot 😂😂 Love your channel. We are in Autumn in Australia and it’s so nice to watch the potting up that you are all doing over there as we start to calm down for winter.

A little piece of advice from my couple times using soil blocks. Leave one block out so you can water. If you water over the blocks, I found the edges would eventually start to melt, and if the blocks melt into each other, I had roots growing into their neighbor's blocks lol. The air pruning didn't work anymore...
