I didn't know my basil plants were still good after they flower!! I thought they were done for! Now I know just to cut them down & let 'em re-grow! Thanks Sara!
Your dedication to keeping your plants thriving despite the heat is truly admirable. Your ability to nurture and support your plants through challenging conditions reflects your exceptional care and commitment. And I am Floating Village Life.
I'm surprised to see you on a monday. I checked my calendar to make sure I didn't have the wrong day. I love your videos no matter what day you share them
Sarah I just have to say how much I love and look forward to your t-shirts. I’m sure you’ve been told before but I just had to say something. They are always so encouraging and uplifting. Positive and bright in messaging. I do love them so much!! Thank you for all that you do, even down to the clothes you wear. Blessings ❤😊
Thank you! I had no idea what to do with my suddenly exploding Basil plants! This is so very useful, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain all this. God bless you!
I have never had good luck growing basil UNTIL I grew it in a greenhouse this year. I'm growing lemon basil, and it has been amazing. I will plant more next year. I'm just cutting it to dry and make into a powder for future casseroles, soups, etc.
I was very pleasantly surprised to see a new video today!! The heat and humidity in Southern Ohio has been terrible with very little rain and not enough cooler days but not quite as hot as your weather has been!! I'm thinking about trying a small herb garden next year with the possibility of including basil!! Your raised bed garden looks fantastic and so much easier to maintain!!
. I have been burning through many of your videos, and really appreciate the depth that you go into in each topic. I live in cold and wet western Washington state. Is there a video in which you show how to start basil from seed and how to coax through until potting up? I have never been successful keeping basil or rosemary alive. Thanks so much!
Mint, Spearmint, Peppermint, ... Basil, Thyime ... Oregano ... Rosemary ... Marjoram ... Thyme ... Lemon Balm ... are all in the mint family. All mint herbs -- LUV -- the sun and heat !!!!
Our basil started flowering way back in early June so we cut off every flower and they are still going strong and making amazing pesto! They are small trees now lol.
Thank you Sarah for the great tips and information about the Basil! Especially the reminder that it makes wonderful tea. Blessings on your family and your homestead Kiddo! 🌻🐛🌿💚🙏💕
Last week you asked for suggestions about plants for the herb garden I suggested rhubarb. Rhubarb originated in China as a medicinal herb. The root was used for digestive health. It is a perennial plant and is considered a vegetable. Most use it as a fruit and sells extremely well at farmers' markets. 💖
@LivingTraditionsHomestead It's not about how hot it is. It's about how much chill time you get. There are some varieties that will grow in zone 8, so maybe you could find a good variety that will work in your area.💖
We dehydrate (or air dry) all of the cut plant (stems too) and then powder it all. The taste is amazing. We use the powder to make sauces for many main courses in our cooking. The stems taste just as wonderful as the leaves and help to produce gallons of pure basil powder over the course of the growing season.
Hello, well i have never seen basil that big before, nor did i know you could leave it to grow that big. I have several pots on my window sill and always cut them after they reach about 6 inches but not anymore. I am going to let them grow and see what happens. Fantastic, i love your channel, always up for learning something new and being entertained. Thank you have a pleasant evening.
Sarah, so happy to see your garden thriving. It is all that thoughtfulness and love you mix into the soil!!! Great info on using herbs to attract the pollinators. 🌸V
Everyone talks about basil getting bitter when it starts to flower. In my experience, a few flower stocks don't seem to make a difference. Now when it has a lot, yes they don't taste as good. I think the genomes basil would still have been good to use as it was on the 2nd pot.
Great info, thanks for sharing! I always grown basil to help disguise my tomato plants from the hornworm moth. I’ve always wondered though, if the disguising scent happens due to the leaves, or if it’s stronger when the basil flowers. Any thoughts? I always let some bolt, just in case. Either way, it seems to work. I’ve never made pesto. Every year, I use some of the leaves to dry and crush and keep in my spice rack. This way, I can enjoy basil from my garden year round!
Omigosh! 😲 i’m shocked at how large your basil plants are. Just harvested my genovese basil plants about a week ago. They were about half your basil size! But they were already starting to go to flower. I’m also in southern Missouri, and I have mostly clay soil and I think because my soil is crappy I’m not getting the size I should. Anyway, I thought I would pinch off the flowers and save them to make a little tea… waste not want not, right? Yeah, don’t do that. It tastes awful! Lol 😆
Hi Sarah, I am curious about the flowers you purchased from Walmart. Did they do well? Thank you for all your videos. I enjoy watching them. Linda from Vidalia, GA
The tops you trim, we use for hot tea. The flowers are so beautiful and full of sweetness as it steeps in the hot water for tea. Especially if you use a glass tea kettle and cups. Enjoy!

Great tips! Thanks so much! One question though. Around 4:50 of this video you talk about washing them before making pesto. In your "Basil to PESTO, From Plant to Plate" video (1 year old) you say NOT to wash them. Which is correct?
Down here in Ga ,I lost my tomatoe plants in the middle of july ,even they were all under a 40 percent sun screening, but i didnt get s harvest sonewhat early ,85 plants I had to pull but I always have spouts waiting inline under the grow lights ready to replant asap,,and i did .Now here in Ga we have a turn a round in our climate somewhat ,its still hot but lots of rain is exploding my plants to regrow for oct nov harvest again,,my pepper plants and cucumbers have exploded and continued to produce right on though the dry 2 month period we gone with over a 100 heat index everyday with no rain.. even wating the plants didnt help. They all dropped their flowers and that was it, in a week they were gone and they were big all near 5 to 6 ft tall,,now I have another bunch looking good with flowers again
My tomato plants aren't doing as well either but at least I'm finally getting some harvests and I have a little over two months left in the growing season!! Better late than never!!
Question since yall are low carb how you use your pesto? I'm also low carb so I'm curious how you eat it without pasta. Your plants all look beautiful.
I tried growing herbs this year in a large raised bed but im having a problem with birds. I had a bug net over the hoops on top and a bird keeps tearing a hole to get inside. I finally just tore everything out and covered the bed. Has anyone else have this problem? What can i do for my herb garden? I never had this problem before. Thank you
I was distracted in the first part of the video by what I assume to be a pepper plant. If so it had the largest darkest leaves I've ever seen on a pepper. Could you show a close up of it and tell us what it is?
