Improving at longboard surfing is tough, but I've just figured out a key cross stepping tip that has opened my eyes quite a bit. Enjoy!

Good stuff, the weight shift to your front foot is right on. What helped for me was focusing on trying to cross step really slow and smooth. It builds your balance and stability when stepping because it forces you to stand on one foot longer since you’re taking slower steps. Once you can do it smooth slow then when you speed it up, it will be much more controlled.

Yes exactly right! Slowing things down is HUGE. I hate doing things slow... but I gotta force myself haha

I’m detecting a theme in some of your videos and it’s set the rail first and then move And do the fun stuff but basics first I know this is super general but it’s helping me thank you for your videos brother

Yes exactly! A great way to think about it is you set your rail first and than keep your rail set through the whole cross stepping process. It's something I struggle with, but if you keep in that mindset everything stays more stable

Here's an idea for a future video: Switch footing. I've been trying this because I'm goofy and blind in my right eye. I don't pop up with my left foot forward, but I take one step and rotate my body after I've caught the wave. It's worked first time every time and was much easier than expected. I got the idea from watching Joel Tudor in the Malibu contest. KUTGW!

I'm not ready for switch foot yet haha! I'll make a video of that for sure in the future

Cool, I train now with big fitness ball, for more balance end "feel" my toes and heel pressure. Nice video!

Hi Brian! Thank you for all the amazing material you post every week. I have been enjoying watching your videos and some of the surf spots featured on them...which brings me to a special request, would you please mention where you are when checking/ choosing a spot and/ or where you are surfing. Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!

Thanks so much Elizabeth! Glad they’re helpful! Well, I stopped mentioning where I was surfing because it makes certain people upset that I’m giving away their spots. However , dm me on Instagram @longboard_sessions and I’ll clue you in

You are running a pivot fin. That causes you to be back-back over the fin to wip the nose around. ...suggestion: try a fin that is more swept back. This should move your wieght/positioning slightly forward, and slow down your need to "dash to the front" when you start cross stepping. Smoooooth is what your after. 🙂

I’ve since put a 4a on the board and things have been easier. I wonder if that’s based on what your saying. I’d like to try a pivot fin again but been loving this 4a haha. might be the best fin for my area

@@LongboardSessions oh, your on the 4A now. Cool. Yeah. That's what I was talking about. -- I watched the video you recommended and I think you had the pivot fin back then. Forgot you switched it up.

kinda random question i use a 8ft longboard and its kinda hard to hang ten and ive been surfing 1 year or so would it be better to use a noserider with less rocker (tradition) to get any better luck but will i be sacrificing turns and cut backs ?
@LongboardSessions
@LongboardSessions 2 года назад
Yea if your goal is noseriding a longer board will be beneficial. Turning a noserider is easy and you can do it quick! You'll notice a difference in the beginning but will quickly adapt
