I tell beginners all the time that having the exact colours that are used in a tutorial is not needed. values, tones, lighting etc are way more important than colour

I have a certain system for colours: Choose how many colours you wanna have in the drawing (1, 3, 7, 20,...) Asign a number to every pencil/marker/whatever Put the ammount of pencils/markes/whatever in a random number generator Generate the amount of numbers of pencils/markers/whatever you wanna use Start drawing with the things you get This is not for everyone. I just like to do that because the restriction and randomness helps me get creative.

True, i litterally drew a portrait 2 years ago trying to get the exact colors and then i didn't draw for 2 years any portraits, cause i couldn't find the same one and was stressed that i would mess my drawing up, so i started looking up and learning, more in the 2 years, the basics of drawing, i started buying a lil bit better quality pencils, started looking how well a pencil blended with another and i started looking how much pressure i could put on em, i had a blue color and could use the exact same one with black and a lil more pressure so i could get the same result with for example a dark blue. I learned a lot in the 2 years, i also didn't just focus on portrait drawings, i also drew doodles, comic book style, i learned a lot, and i definitely learned how to get creative with a drawing. Love your vids you helped a lot with your tutorials. (I recently made another portrait after 2 years and it is way better and more detailed cause i didn't care to much about the colors.)

It's really difficult to choose a color when following some people's tutorials when they just use names and when they don't give you a swatch for you to freezeframe so you can match. I felt very pressured to got the biggest prismacolor colored pencil set because that's what most tutorial artists use on RU-vid. I didn't want to invest that much money in a set of pencils I didn't know if I'd like. I got a tremendous deal on a prisma set recently but you know what? I don't like them as much my castle art and arteza sets. They are so soft, they don't hold a point long and the tips break off easily and some colors, well, the sharpener just eats them.

Thank you so much for this video Kirsty. I am partially sighted and born with no functioning cones in my eyes, as a result I have no colour vision whatsoever. For many years I have steered clear of coloured work bar a few pieces that sort of happened accidentally. When I started watercolor and red was called for, I'd just use whatever red I had. Then I started learning about warm and cool shades of red (and all other colors), and that threw me off. So like, do I put a cool color next to another cool color, or should I surround it with warm colors. Are shadows always cool colors, or can they sometimes be warm colors? Those are my challenges now.

I guess this isn’t a problem I’ve really had, especially since I find coloured pencils to take so long to use that I don’t often bother with them. I use a cheapish 12-pack of watercolour pencils and then just go for an abstract/impressionist (?) style with bright, unrealistic colours. Trying to make realistic pieces would take hours and hours and destroy my wrists haha. I’ll probably take this advice more on board with my watercolours though - found myself worrying a bit earlier about not having any Mars Black
