My DIY 100 dollars chainsaw sawmill just got some serious upgrades. Sawmills are great but loading and holding logs can be a real challenge.
in this video i show off some improvement and show you a how you can load large logs with one finger and how to secure the logs to the chainsaw sawmill with a super simple method.

Great improvements! I've seen people on other channels have mishaps with logs turning sideways while winching them onto the platform. That makes me want to see a dual winch, or a single winch that pulls two cables, so the log isn't being pulled from a single point and the balance isn't as critical.

Great ergonomic chainsaw mill! I’ll build one soon. I’m a longtime Alaska mill guy.. For your saw, consider a bark box or other more open exhaust. Saw will stay much cooler during those long cuts and remove some hesitation. I run a ms440 with west coast saws bark box and a high volume oil kit on a 32” bar running machine chain, single skip on a 15deg grind with every other pair of cutting plate /top plate ground off 85%. It’s chain drag you don’t need cutting with the grain and leaving the cleaning/sidewall leaves a cleaner cut than a double skip chain ground to 15 degrees.. if not too windy I prefer to rip with top of bar, dust chips clear at the bar tip and doesn’t load up the power head as much. A chainsaw was born to eat wood, if you find yourself having to push harder than keeping contact to cut then your chain or lube probably need attention. Too much pressure and extreme usage of ripping will wear modern bars quickly so keep your bar square and flip it often.

Just to let you know, you actually can glue plastic laminate (countertop material) to your boards or plywood using regular white or yellow glue. If it’s going to be used outdoors though I would use an exterior yellow glue. The catch is you got to have some pressure on your laminate and wood while the glue dries. In room temps takes about an hour to set up but a full 24 hours to cure completely. Once the glue good and dry that laminate not coming off anytime soon whether it’s outside or not? Good ol Titebond exterior yellow glue works wonders keeping the laminate on whatever wood you glue it to? Contact cement for the average home owners can only get a water based contact cement and it’s not very good. You got to be a licensed contractor to get the good high quality contact cement thet’s actually pretty flammable too! Sure that’s why the average home owners can’t buy the good contact cement any longer?

Just so you know Izzy that 100$ sawmill now costs over 300$ to make and I'm now researching too see if making it out of steel is more cost worthy in the long run and last a hell of a lot longer. It's sad I just retired last year and wanted to do woodworking full time and now the lumber industry prices are just about too put me out of business before I'm really getting started, so now I need a sawmill. Your sawmill is awesome looking, do you plan on releasing plans for it? If so, I'm interested 😎👍

@alanr745
@alanr745 3 года назад
True, but prices will drop eventually...but it’ll require more truck drivers, less demand, and patience on our part to wait for those factors to equalize...if they ever do. I doubt we’ll ever see 2x4x8 for $2.05 again, but $3.50 or so isn’t bad.
@JamesEid
@JamesEid 3 года назад
@@alanr745 $3.50 or so isn't bad for you? Inflation works when the status quo through the market agrees on higher prices. I'm not sure if everyone agrees that half of the current prices (current price 7.50 a 2x8), which have been tripled (from 2.25 a 2x8), is acceptable. Raise your own rate ( paycheck) by 3x and see if your customers feel that only 2x original rate is acceptable...ha ha...

Had an idea about a saw mill that I thought you might be interested in. (I don't have the knowledge to know if it would be possible, or affordable. So I thought I'd share it to see if you were interested.). Instead of using a chainsaw, modify a circular saw with a 20+ inch blade, and mount that to the side of your mill where you put the chainsaw. The ways I see it going is that the circular would either cut the top, or the sides off the log. Or do you think it would be better to mount the saw on the bottom and slide logs over the top of it?

There's a Russian guy that tried out cutting logs with his chainsaw blade vertical instead of horizontal. He claimed it worked much better (he did it freehand, not in a jig), and he claimed it was much easier. I think I'll copy this $100 sawmill set-up, but I'll try the chainsaw blade vertical first to see if I like it.

You lose some portability but I agree an electric version would be cool. Not sure how much HP it would require. Seven or more seems like a lot. I was curious if a 240v 3HP motor (maybe run off a VFD for the speed and power controls) would be enough.
