For those wondering, Beer is commonly used for race horses and working horses to help their muscles recover after strenuous activity. It also has a lot of vitamins they need. One or two little beers a day is perfectly fine and horses actually love the taste. *Edit:* I forgot some stuff: 1. Specifically DARK BEER must be used 2. Beer can help horses who can't sweat properly, which is an issue Big John had. 3. Big John is no longer with us. He was an Amish work horse for 20 years before being saved from slaughter. He spent the final five years of his life getting all the love and care he could want or need before passing away late in the summer of 2023 at this rescue. I would also like to clarify that I am not associated with the rescue. When I said "this rescue" I meant the one in the video.
I suppose that's why the Amish raise such big and strong horses to do all that work for them. And they work them very hard, apparently. Then when the horses are past their most useful years, the Amish just sell them off - mostly for slaughter it seems. Sadly only a small number get lucky like Big John.
@@-Dianthus- you should google it. another horse named Big John died Pennsylvania in 2022. This horse is in Virginia and is still very much alive. People need to stop spreading misinformation.
I had no idea he'd passed. Big John was incredible. Not afraid to show his personality at all. That rescue knew what he needed and gave it to him tenfold. And he deserved every bit of it. Rest easy, Big John! 😔🥺❤🙏
@@deannad9105 Mary Ann (the horse) certainly enjoyed it every time she had a beer! She knew exactly what was ahead and her eyes lit up when he opened one for her. That was a plus, too, just knowing she enjoyed her occasional treat. Have a wonderful weekend.
FYI This is Colby’s Crew Rescue and that little bit of a woman is truly one of the most amazing human beings on the planet! I watched her rescue before she was an actual rescue! What her and her wife built is nothing short of a miracle. Big John’s story is incredible but Colby’s story is what started it all!❤
Thanks for the info. I'm 72 now but when I was younger and could move better, lol, I volunteered for rescue groups and at shelters. It's a rewarding experience, even though I was already working in the pet industry as regular work. 😊
Thank you for sharing their rescue! I absolutely adore them and all the work they put into rescuing. There hasn’t been a single slaughter rescue video I’ve seen where I haven’t cried like a baby. And Ally is truly the epitome of a horse whisperer. There is a reason why every horse is drawn to her, they know she is a pure soul to her core. They’re one of the main rescues I make a point to donate to every chance I get. I know for a fact if they had the funding they would rescue EVERY single horse from slaughter. No matter how “difficult”. They are the perfect example of what a rescue should be
I remember seeing a video about this rescue first getting Big John, hard to believe he’s gone. I’m glad he at least had some good years, but man, what a sad story. To go through life never knowing love or freedom, only to finally find it when you’re so old you only have a few years left to enjoy it. 😢I hope his big, beautiful soul is at peace and that his larger than life story continues to change the hearts and minds of the world. RIP Big John.
@@CidYoung-REALTOR he is still alive. people got confused because another horse named Big John passed away. The one that passed was from Central Pennsylvania Horse Rescue, the one in the video is from Colby’s Crew Rescue.
I’m so glad that Big John finally has this rich wonderful life. To see him enjoying his beer is a real treat! Stardust and Big John are just adorable together. A senior couple just enjoying retirement ❤❤
All horses love beer, it's the hops. This guy around 5'3" was standing at the fence right in front of my Percheron Zues, he stood at 18.5 hands. This guy decided to open a 40oz of beer right in front of Zues, who leaned over the fence, grabbed by his mouth the full bottle out of the guys hands, threw his head back, drank every last drop, and then spit the empty bottle at the guys feet.
My son works for a carriage tour company in Charleston, SC. He told me the staff takes such great care of the horses, making sure they are very healthy and happy. Many of them are draft horses. And the get beer too.
Those horses are so lucky to be there. From what I have heard, there are a lot of horses like Big John, that are used by the Amish for work purposes, but many are not treated all that well. And wind up being sold off for slaughter when no longer deemed useful. The racehorse industry also creates a lot of "discards", that end up in those sales, mostly destined for the same fate. Very sad to contemplate.
Big John had the life we all dream of. Free beer, massages, good-looking female friend, room to roam. And he was damn good-looking, too. R.I.P Big John.
@@raenaprottengeier well, then good for him. Hope he's around for a long time and gets to try a variety of beers along the way. I'm not a beer drinker myself , but I still envy him.
I believe Big John I s the same horse I saw sometime back that when he first arrived at this rescue he could barely walk, if it is the same horse his rehab has gone fantastic. Strong and healthy now!!!
Apparently he has passed. So terrible that he could barely walk. He looks so fantastically healthy and well here. He was lucky to get this wonderful retirement.
Yup, he was used as an amish work horse and was over worked and abused. He passed away last summer but he had an amazing 5 year retirement with Colbys rescue
Awh.....what a precious young spring love... I am glad they are a happy couple. Beautiful Horses...Thanks for sharing a wonderful moment...cherish them ❤
Thanks to all of you that educated those of us who love horses but know nothing about their care. 😊 That beautiful boy deserves his beer breaks! How heartwarming that he is so well cared for and loved. All animals should be so well treated. Bless the human family that takes care of them. ❤🙏
I saw the story of big John when he came to you. I have three horses myself. I was absolutely devastated when I saw his story, but he is spoiled now, and he is living the life. He absolutely more than deserves. Thank you ladies and gentlemen, for all of your hard work for not just big John, but for all of the horses and other animals that you rescue. A lot of people don’t understand the time and effort it takes with just one horse and the upkeep, and you have a flock of many . You can definitely see your teamwork, and dedication. Not just just to the animals but to each other. Much love to all of you..
Dark beer has many B vitamins in it, and is used for Irish race horses. Hops, barley etc Also not sure about now, but used to be available in hospitals, for the same reason( in Germany)
@@spook6394 WhO knows what's going on NOW. When my opa was in the hospital, it was for stomach issues, nutrition. I lived there. So, what would I know. The armchair experts of the world know so much more.
@@SuperKasper333stout is made from malted barley which has been linked to helping conditions like Crohns disease and Ulcerative Colitis. I have UC and was pleased to discover my favorite beer (stout) was the only kind of alcohol safe for me to consume.
This is great! I'm 75 and always loved horses! They are so affectionate and VERY smart ! Hey, I love all animals! It's people that give me headaches 😂😂!!
Please keep up the good care you give him …he deserves it. Beer helps to calm the painful areas and allows them to strengthen the tendons. I was born in another country and they used to use stout which is a type of very strong beer. People couldn’t call a vet out whenever a horse seemed lame or under the weather,so they would try old times treatments first and if that didn’t work they would call the vet out.
U sound like u know what ur doing. The fact that ur able 2 rescue these beautiful animals is a wonderful thing. Keep up the good work. I know its sad when they pass, but u gave them the best life they could have. A little heaven here on earth. Good job 👍👍❤❤
What a beautiful couple these two make big John and stardust how sweet I’m so happy they have each other to grow old with. Thanks for finding them for each other ❤❤❤❤you done good lil lady
After learning about how the Amish treat their animals, I've lost any respect that I may have had for them. On the outside the Amish may seem okay, but the more that I learn about them, the more that I don't like them. What majestic horses, they deserve to have great lives.
We used beer with our Gypsy stud horse Reht who has a similar issue as Big John on the hotter days on the farm, he used to raise his lip when we would give it to him and he would tap his front hooves while he was eating his feed that had the beer mixed in. He made us some beautiful babies with his lady Faliyn, Rest in peace, our beautiful power couple.
He's big and beautiful.. I don't know a lot about horses except I like them. Strong, intelligent, fast, very individual characters, and could totally kick your ass if they want to.
@@ehova5838"Horses are considered to be among the most intelligent animals on Earth." And that's straight outta the horses mouth 🤣🤣🤣🤣. I crack myself up sometimes 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I have a Quarter Horse named Foggy (after the Avocado At Law, I have a tradition of naming my pets after Marvel characters), and he drinks a can of dark beer a day. He’s about 7 years old, and it’s really beneficial. It helps with vitamins, gastrointestinal, and it calms him down. Beer’s good for horses.
R I.P Big John glad you were rescued by these wonderful ppl and were able to live out the rest of your days being loved. That what the ppl that worked you should have done as a show of respect for all your years of hard work. Instead when you got old and tired they threw you away. Glad the rescue was there to save you.
ALL HORSES LOVES BEER!! That Is their FAVORITE DRINK!! My Uncle's HORSES Loves STELLA ARTOIS AND GUINNESS!! It Relaxes Them!! What More Can You Ask For!! Thank You For Sharing This HAPPY HOUR STORY!! With Us!!❤😊
Horses are so sweet and kind. I’ve also seen one way smaller then these get freaked out and kick a cow in the head, beef for dinner that week. Always treat horses with respect and care is all I’m saying y’all, they are big
Actually equestrians have long traditions about giving the horses beer, it’s been another source of various nutrients, helped with sweating (inability to sweat can be fatal in certain conditions) and been an all purpose remedy. And actually most horses tend to enjoy the taste of it, as seen in the video- so it’s more like a treat. That being said, it should still be given in moderation. Although some sport organizations give it the evil eye, so if you compete just make sure to check the rules. 🙂
