Thanks Sam. Sounds good. But many battery startups claim advantages, promise great things, and then fade away. Some of those companies can best be described as scammers. Others are mistaken in their beliefs and claims. Call me a cynic, if you like, but I'm used to seeing people betting the bank on ideas which turn out to be pipe dreams, so I'll wait to see them on the market, and living up to their claims, before buying any.

It’s one thing to make something in a lab, it’s another to mass produce it and sell it at a competitive price. If the batteries they make really last longer than the cars they will be put in, then we really need to come up with standards on these battery packs, so that we can swap them into other makes and models of cars, instead of them going to waste.
@johncahill3644
@johncahill3644 Год назад
You make a valid point about standardization, but one also has to ask this: why should the car wear out before the battery pack does? An electric motor/drivetrain can easily be designed to last for those 2 million kilometers. As this EV market shakes out, I fully expect to see quick lube joints and small-parts mechanics to be largely replaced by local auto-upholsterers and vinyl wrappers (and so on).

The older generation of car companies have had to do a lot of sketchy stuff to remain competitive. The have to deal with politicians, media, share holders, Unions, parts suppliers who themselves all have these same problems, etc. Many of these groups have directly opposing needs. Keeping them all happy is nearly impossible without bending the rules, and loopholes have been put into those rules specifically so they can use them. Tesla is uniquely efficient. This would not be possible if they were unionized, had to deal with dealerships, had to deal with suppliers that all have their own special interests, so yea I agree that it sucks but that crappy system was manipulated and twisted over decades by all those various interests.

@EdgewiseSJ
@EdgewiseSJ Год назад
@@lengould9262 Nah, I just wanted to shed some light. I work in manufacturing and a decade ago, I had the same point of view you do now. Over time, I came to realize why certain things are the way they are. People get in the way of efficiency all the time for all different types of reasons. It's stupid and annoying, but it's just reality. ICE car companies have long been the target of environmental groups who are often supported by the media in there attacks. Compromises get made. Unions have a lot of political weight, so often get their way as well. Of course the share holders demand profits, so the company will fail if that isn't delivered. None of these groups are all that worried about the long term health of the companies they are hindering. Even the share holders often just look at short term profits. The people running the company are generally very high payed CEOs who may or may not be worth their expense. Squeezing something through a loophole left in a law is just enough for them to survive in a market that is extremely competitive where they've been losing market share since the 70's. Close those loopholes and they'll be owned by Chinese companies in under 5 years who don't have any of those same problems to deal with.

All the really sharp engineering folk are researching batteries - things are progressing really fast. What if these people have to start out slowly, due to Elon sucking up all the Lithium :) , and a year from now somebody makes another breakthrough that uses no lithium, and is 3 times better? I think we're going to see a dizzying array of new battery tech, electric motor tech, and software advances that will happen really quickly, and be totally amazing. I'm looking forward to seeing it all unfold. But, I'd keep your money in Tesla - it's the only company I know of that is not only ahead of everybody, but 10 years ahead of everybody else. One key fact about elon sucking up the lithium is they are cutting deals with nations where tesla will inject capital and expertise to assist improving the efficiency of mining and processing. Other companies don't want to get that involved. Everyone but tesla just wants to order batteries and let the battery company worry about supply. Tesla directly secures their supplies and controls quality. Tesla does not rely on battery makers to find supplies on their own. Legacy auto will very likely have battery orders that never show up because they are ignoring the lack of mineral supply.

If this battery technology turns out to do all they have claimed, it will indeed be a game-changer. But, forgive me if I suffer from "game-changer" fatigue. I would appreciate it if you could drill down a bit more and let us know if this is for real. Perhaps you can give us real-world examples of where this battery is currently being used. Are there any EV companies buying these batteries or have them on order? What about an interview with their CEO and a tour of the factory? Are there any articles in the research literature about this battery type and its strengths and weaknesses? There are too many unanswered questions to conclude that these batteries are game-changers. But I will stay tuned. On another note, I agree with your take on the importance of President Biden pushing domestic development and production of batteries and associated high technology. While I have the highest respect for China's ability to produce EVs and batteries, of late, they have been saber-rattling a bit too much for comfort. The West needs to develop its own sources of domestic production. Our over-reliance on China is a national security concern. Increasing our competitive position will help balance the world economy so that other nations will have alternative sources of supply. This will help consumers speed the transition from ICE vehicles to EVs in the long term.

The issue with Chinese dominance is because of USA capitalism not despite it. USA has handed over it's technology at the altar of corporate greed and China has played it by pegging the yuan to the USD. The electronic device we are all using here and now is proof alone.

MNS has C4V patented tech (C4V is an american company who created this battery - MNS has a 10% stake), non-China supply chain, no nickel nor cobalt (makes it cheaper), its own graphite mine (30% of a battery as per weight), energy comes from hydroelectric power (Niagara falls), battery charges faster and has lower degradation, higher voltage, company has Sen Schumer support... It tickes all the boxes! They just need the government loans in order to scalate faster.

@@trizzybones there’s actually several people over half a million miles on one battery pack. I imagine with LFP and it’s derivatives, we’ll start seeing cars with multiple millions of miles under a single pack.

Dept of Energy in US mandate EV batteries have 8 year 100,000 mile warranty. In California, it's 10 year 150,000 miles. So you would think if EV batteries were bad they would avoid selling in California or would be the last place but no, it's the first place new EV's are sold.
