What about it is so ugly to you? I think a different pick guard and bridge would completely change it for the better. But I dig it as is. Got that retro Rick/Fender PJ thing going on that I dig
I'm a fan of the Hipshot version of the Ric Bridge (the Ric original IS crappy), and it does LOOK cool with the cover, though I can't play well with that cover in place. To combine the P and Ric is a reasonable idea, but I don't care for the Jackson headstock on this, either. The color seems to be chosen to enhance the WTF reaction they expected from the design. Sounded ok.
I think we're finally in a spot where musicians aren't so caught up in traditional aesthetics and people are willing to buy weird/crazy/eye-catching instruments over the typical Fenders. I still think the 2x2 Jackson headstock would fit the overall look better, but I appreciate them taking risks with this bass.
Agreed about the headstock. I think it's likely a production thing. All of their Fender-like basses have that 4-in-a-row headstock shape. This is likely just the exact same body template they use for all of those, just routed and finished differently. It's a shame, too, because I think they actually have one of the nicer 2x2 headstock shapes out there.
Hideous? I actually found it to be one of the most gorgeous production line bass guitars that I have seen in a while. Also happen to love the sound and feel. I'm not crazy about the headstock but the rest of the bass makes up for it.
@Tampaterry54 Taste is subjective. Personally, I don't really believe that any guitar is truly ugly. Many are made for different purposes. Some are made to be strictly performance, some are meant to be crazy and or a novelty, others are meant to look elegant, etc. I am not a big fan of basic "traditional"looking guitars like a Stratocaster or Les Paul. They don't look bad and I have even owned a few in those shapes. But I always liked the vibes of Rickenbacker. This gives the character of Rickenbacker while providing the practicality of P-bass guitars. Great balanced pickup set up and the colors are reasonably noticeable. Again, aside from the headstock, I wish there were more basses with these kinds of features.
@@InfiniteRhombus I'm not going to dumb down my grammar for someone who can't muster anything meaningful to say beyond "you're out of your fucking mind". How about you grow up, pay attention in school, and stop expecting everyone else to dumb themselves down so that you don't feel inadequate.
I have both David Ellefson jackson basses (CBX IV in quicksilver & CBXM) and they are my favorite basses. The amount of tone control paired with the EMG pickups is just a step above all the other basses I've played, especially when recording or playing along with music.
The bridge on this is somewhat superior to previous Rickenbacker bridges. Hipshot makes an aftermarket bridge and this is basically that with Jackson branding
I was thinking it looked familiar. Love the colour, like the shark inlay for the markers, not crazy about the head and the pick guard looks like it was designed by a retarded AI. To be sure every bass shouldn't look exactly the same and the sound is pretty impressive.
I had a chance to play a black one at a Guitar Center, and the setup was surprisingly amazing. It was very fun to play on with overdrive and I’m glad you like it!
I just bought one from a store near me and it's taking me a minute to get use to. But anyway, thanks for the demo, you're always a pleasure watching, love your bass playing.\m/
I played one in GC and well everyone is right. It feels good to play. I just preordered the five string version that’s coming out. Only available in black or white so far. I got the white. 35” scale with the p pickup in reverse.
Love it, picked one up a couple years ago! Modern, sharply angled bass with aggressive tone, but with a splash of 60s vintage aesthetic, totally my vibe.
I absolutely love the look of this bass and am so stoked people are finally doing reviews on it! Killer review as always man, more into it than ever after seeing this now.
Jackson concerts are scenic as hell, and this one suonds really good, i definitely want to try one someday. What about doing a video of the Ellefson 30th signature that came out in 2020, i can't see any reviews of it on youtube..
Science cannot measure the tiny amount of time it would take me to pull money out of my pocket and buy that bass if it was a left hand model.. That thing is ugly nasty in looks and sound in all the right ways. 10/10
As a fellow lefty, I've felt that pain many times! Not this time, but many OTHER times! haha! Here's hoping Jackson change their mind and you can get one!
I'd consider it if I was ever again in the market for a 34" scale bass (I mainly play shortscale following shoulder/neck injuries). Quite a nice price too.
@@mannishboy1 The Jackson Minion is their short scale. It looks similar and is a P/J configuration but no pic guard and slightly different body shape. Very inexpensive also. I've heard a lot if positive comments about it and Low End Lobster and I believe our friend here have reviewed it.
I’m a lifelong metal bass player, so Jackson is an old, well fitting shoe for me, so to speak, and I keep wanting to dog these for just not looking like the thrashy, angry basses that I’m used to them being, but I can’t really fault it because I’m also a diehard Bc rich guy, so…am I really in a position to be telling other people what a bass should look like? Conflicted.
I mean, it's not any more ugly than most other basses. Anything that follows that classic Fender designs and those hideous headstocks and pickguards is goddamn ugly. Rickenbackers look ridiculous too. This one seems to be a cross between those two worlds, but somehow distinctly Jackson too. What makes this one so particularly ugly? The fact that it's more green than the others? 😄In any case, judging from this video, this thing sounds quite formidable.
Saw one of these in my local GC and, had I had the funds at the time, would've jumped on it. Love the whole FrankenRickPJ vibe. I do wonder though if I'm the only one who thinks it'd look even more badass with a reverse headstock?
Everyone see differently, but I think nearly the exact opposite. I think this bass looks sharp, and I like garish rock and roll colorage. It looks pretty great to me.
I know what you mean about the pickguard, I think Ric's have really thick single ply pickguards so copies tend to follow suit, I had a retrovibe ricky copy for a while and you could use the pickguard as a finger ramp....
I've heard a lot of positive comments about Jackson instruments in general but I've yet to play one however I am ordering a Jackson guitar from Sweetwater of course. I can't say enough positive things about Sweetwater, they are outstanding!
Yep, I was talking to a sales rep awhile back, asking a lot of questions about a Bass I wanted to get. I said "you know a lot". He said "We go thru months of training before they let us take calls". Yes!
I just saw the green you have here and the orange colour, if you think the green is hideous check the orange version, and yes now I want the orange 1 !!!!
In some ways, this reminds me of an A-10 Warthog. Kinda ugly, but amazing at it's mission. I'm interested most in the neck, as otherwise I can't see why I would pick it over an actual PJ.
I'm thinking about getting this bass, I currently own an Ibanez SR506 But I'm honestly kind of tired of the 6 strings and it's straining on my shoulders, is this a good upgrade or is this bass overpriced? I used to own a Jackson JS2 and I loved it, if that helps
I had one of these for a few months and ended up selling it. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved this Jackson bass, I just found I didn't have enough versatility in the preamp with it, the control range is too narrow and not very much boost or cut, it was more like a passive bass you could tweak, but it sounded absolutely wonderful, very pronounced low end and midrange, the one I had definitely had a hotter P pickup, idk if that was normal, really good playing w other people, I simply never was able to get the range of tones I could out of my old ibanez SR500 (which is around the same price point now). I figured I was just using that ibanez and my P-bass with SD Quarter pounders so much and this didn't really sound that radically different
I almost bought one of these when they first came out as I played one at GC and loved how it played and sound but it was just so hideous... my son who is a much better bassist than I am said "lets buy it." Now I know I just should have done it... waiting on a US Geddy to get here from SW then I may grab one of these next just to have it for our collection. We do have a 1982 Fender P Bass Special in Candy Apple green which is somewhat similar in color. Yes 1982 Special, not 83 Elite, it's a 1 off from NAMN.
I love this bass, planning to get one! I tried a bunch of basses at Guitar Center and this played and felt better than everything else I tried. I like the funky, retro look. I love the green and the Fireburst.
Huh? I think you may need a new prescription for your vision. This is a cool looking bass! At least your ears still work... Ha. Thanks for the video. All the best!
I sort of like the looks, weird but sort of appealing. (Yeah cover would be straight off) Nice sound too, well when you play it ...I'd probably fudge it =¬).
I've had a Jackson concert bass for over 8 years. And I realize if I send an email to Jackson inquiring about this bass that I own. I won't get a reply because Jackson is owned by Fender 🎸DuD
If this Bass looks bad then where does that leave all the other basses, other than Fender’s two gems, that are like looking in the toilet just prior to flushing?
Why all this Rickenbacker talk 🤔. The only thing that reminds of a Rick is the fretboard inlays. This bass looks better and sounds better, more like a Stingray + Jazz bass combined. Really good slap sound 🎸
Man, I love Jackson, even if some people dislike them because their "hockey stick" (but very "metal") headstock...got that...but this one, no matter how good it sounds, is just an ugly looking piece of hardware...don't know why they ditched the classic CBXNT IV-V X series in favor of this🤢🤷♂️😒
I think it looks super fantastic. Specially the black one! Rock'n roll machine kinda looks. Now there is a light blue version that also ticks my box...That Rick vibe is fabulous indeed...Does anybody know the exact weight of this bass?? I hope it doesn't go beyond the 4 kgs barrier. Thanks!!!
Please, if possible, record a review of the Jackson CBXNT DT 5 strings. It seems to me that the 5-string version is very different from the 4-string version in several aspects. For example, the body (especially the white color seems to have a different thickness), pickups (model and reverse p).
I've been looking for a PJ bass that costs more than $300 and less than $750. It's either this or the Yamaha BB434. I don't really care what it looks like, but I think you're kind of going over the top on the aesthetics. It's not that bad. My only issue really is I really don't like laurel boards. I wish you'd spent more time going over the control knobs instead of spending half the video going on about how disgusting you think it looks.
I realize this video is over a year old now, but I thought I would give my limited review of the bass. First off, I am not a professional bass player and I do not gig. I currently own three basses: A Fender American P/J, a Musicman single pickup active bass, and a UBass. I like having variety. I write and record my own music and I like to have variety to match my various songs. I had some credit at Guitar Center and had planned to pick up a dedicated Squire 40th Anniversary P-Bass, which was on sale. On a whim, I decided to give the Jackson bass a try and was quite surprised to find that it really hit a niche sound for me that I wasn't getting with the other basses. This bass was on sale for $380 and I really didn't have an issue with the color (this is the red - really more orange one). To my untrained ears, this bass has a tighter sound than my other basses and really takes well to flat picking. Anyway, I am a happy buyer and I think it will fit into the nitch that I want it for, which is surf and surf rock. It's comfortable to play, sounds good, and appears well built. I think it is well worth what I paid for it and it certainly is different from the basses I already own.
I love Jackson guitars, but their basses, not so much! The first time I saw this I thought it was really weird because of the Rickenbacker-style pick guard and hardware. I called it the Jackenbacker at the time 😄. But you’re right, it does sound good. But I would definitely choose this one over any other Jackson bass.
I think they really missed a trick by not putting a set of SD ric pickups in it. It's just kinda, a PJ bass with a funky bridge/pickguard? Could have really undercut Rickenbacker there.
I just bought one because a friend has it as his main bass. He plays a lot of 90s rock and it sounded great. That's not my genre, but I found one too cheap to pass up. I was thinking about reselling it, but after playing it for a few days, I think it may have to remain in my arsenal in case I get asked to play more rock oriented music. I don't have another bass that's nearly as aggressive as this one. I really like it.
I love it. Must have one. I don't like the color choices, I already have too many black guitars. I'll probably get the red one. Thanks for helping me buy another damn bass!
Wow, the bass sounds great when you slapped it, never thought it would be a funk bass too. What was your knob presets for the funk bass line around 2:32? I just bought the green one on clearance for $450. I love that it’s an active bass.
It's like a PJ bass & a Ricky had a kid. Myelf, I liked the look, unique, love that color, but I tried one & my style didn't do too well with the neck pick up location, but that's just me, used to a PJ.
No.. you do not get candy with every purchase with Sweetwater. I ordered something before and they forgot my candy. I wasn't going to waste my time calling them about it, but it did kind of shit on the experience. gear day kind of sucked. can't remember what it was.. either my line 6 firehawk multi effects unit, the schecter c-7, or it's case .. one of the three.
I found one of these on the Amazon warehouse for $400 and it said that was in very good condition. So long story short the bass arrived in a huge box with literally no protection no bubbles wrapped just loose inside the box and I was there is no way this bass survived this. I was wrong the bass did has some damage to the head stock but the neck was fine with a little paint crack by the joint and like a piece of wood from the headstock it was in the box so I glue the thing after I set it up and play it I just couldn't part with it. Is now one of my favorite and I own a few basses. And to the guy at Amazon that shipped the bass thank you for been a big piece of shi...t
"Because Jackson never answered my emails" Uh its almost like companies don't want to work with people who through shit at them before giving their product a chance.
