The picture is of a bow saw. It's not new. It is however, a very dangerous tool. The kickback potential is extreme.

That shingle sawyer was slow! My first job was "block packer" in a red cedar shingle mill, then I moved up to cut off operator, producing blocks for 3 shingle saws, a resaw and a horizontal saw.

Yeah, can't find bowsaws anymore. Their main use was for cutting brush while clearing land, building fire trail, etc. Our organization stopped using them 35 years ago due to them being a safety hazard. Lot more likely to get kickbacks, cuts, hangups.

I have a Homelite Super Wiz with a bow blade. I used to use it to cut firewood, but it is too heavy for me now since I’ve gotten older.

I used a Homelite saw with a bow blade back around 1975. Loved it! Wore it out, then could not find a replacement.

@@Joe-by8jh They are, at least until you've had a lot of training and experience with them and know all the key ways to be careful when using them. For beginners, they can make a canyon in the middle of your forehead.

@@LifeIsThePrayer my friend,,, a bow saw is used to cut brush like manzanita small oak brush,etc… not sure where you live but out here the brush can be 10’high.. a normal saw bar would have the brush whipping back and forth, whereas a bow bar does not let that happen

@@jamesfogerty3044 Ok thanks. Canada here. I do know brush. Cut a lot of snowmobile trail. Willows etc. And general logging. All I see is a whole lot of nose for a whole lotta kickback and NO chain brake. People on RU-vid seem to want to just cut slices with them. Never saw them up here.

Why would you use a bowbar for bucking a log? They were designed for brush piling and they are very fast when cutting limbs from downed trees. They were never designed to use as a bucking saw? I used my first bowbar in 1965 and they had been around then for at least a decade! As far as bowbars being dangerous, only if you try to use them like a chainsaw. If you push the wide end of the bar against a limb the dog will hold it and it isn't as dangerous as a regular bar because it can't kick back. I ran one off and on for many years and never had a problem. They save your back and arms in a 12 hour day! You also can't use a drill to pick your teeth because they are dangerous, WTF? Over!

in general, a bigger faster and faster saw gets the job done faster which saves energy and pollutes less. Try doing some real cutting with an electric chain saw and let me know how it goes. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
