Hello everyone, today we meet again.
I'm still busy finishing the roof. I have cut many wooden shingles. When entering the forest, cut trees to make horizontal bars, I met a quite unexpected thing, a flock of wild chickens appeared near my work place. I decided to take them home. After a while of chasing, I caught the chicks, and the hens were gone. I brought them home and knitted a cage to keep the chicks inside to let them acclimate. I will tame them.
Do you like this new thing?
Have fun watching the video!

Here in the states, old farmhouses used.wooden shingles too, personally for your area I think you'd be better off with either the baked brick or bamboo half pipe shingles. The amount of rain is gonna be a problem for the wooden ones.

Excellent work, thank you for your excellent videos. As a lifelong roofer, I would agree that clay-fired (or concrete) tiles would seem to be a better option. You seem to be able to produce large amounts of concrete. The wooden shakes you are making will be difficult to fasten, will probably warp and will obviously rot. Unless you have a wood more like cedar, and can split into shakes rather than that hardwood you have to cut at and shape. However, your structure doesn't have proper support for laying out heavy concrete tiles, and you would have to modify your deck as well. So, maybe the hardwood isn't the worst idea after all. One thing for sure, I will be watching closely to see what it ends up like!!
@lhartatt
@lhartatt 2 года назад
Sure seems that your recommendation for improving the roof ‘s structural support then laying concrete tiles would be easier and more effective than the wood boards. Re-roof with longer lasting concrete tiles once and move on to other projects
@aboveallthingslove6349
@aboveallthingslove6349 2 года назад
Concrete wouldn't work here, the thickness of the aggregate would increase the weight too much. Cement from hydrated lime with a fine binder could do the job other than if he were to do clay though.👍
@НехорошийЧеловек-ц7к

@ Primitive Skills: Split the sections of log 3-4 times. It will save a lot of time and sweat. It is a much quicker way to remove the wood you don't want. Less waste. To quickly smooth the "planks"/shingles, make a Drawknife. It is a knife with a handle at each end of the blade. Each handle is bent 90 degrees from the cutting edge of the blade. The result looks like a square corner "U". The cutting edge should be approximately 25-30cm wide (the bottom section of the "U"). The cutting edge should be to the inside of the "U", and slightly curved like your axe. This will make cutting/shaving easier. The Drawknife is used by sitting across/straddling the log, holding a handle in each hand, and pulling or drawing the knife towards yourself. The Drawknife works similar to your wood block plane but is designed to quickly smooth roughcut or split wood. A drawknife is very similar to your Froe (log splitter), except it has handles at each end of the blade. You have many planks to go, make your life easier.

Before you even do the new roof, the walls need to be repaired and lime coated. Then since you already have to modify the roof system for shingles, like others have said, you're better off going with the clay tiles. They'll last much longer than the wooden ones which will warp, shrink, etc. and eventually rot, not to mention the clay ones will help heat / cool the house. Save the wood shingles you've already made and let them fully season and then you can use those for the roof of a proper chicken coop so all your hard work doesn't go to waste.
@margaretasato2827
@margaretasato2827 2 года назад
I'm glad that you are well! I worry about you when I don't see any new videos after an extended amount of time. I wonder if you thought about the long term benefits of having a ceramic tile roof instead of one made by wooden planks. It seems so hard and cumbersome to make all these wooden planks - then after a while having to do it all over again. I'm thinking about your environment: normal wood rot from the high humidity, termites, monsoons, potential fires etc. I think with a ceramic roof tile, the durability factor should last you much longer. If you think that it'll get too hot under a ceramic roof, you could always add a layer of the natural huge elephant size leaves on top to deflect the sun's rays beating down on you. Think about it for a while. Your fish look amazing! The rice paddy is coming along nicely! Your corn crop looks like you'll have plenty of food in the future. I believe that you were also growing some root vegetables a while ago. I assume that they are doing well. Now you have some chickens! Great job catching them and building a coop for them. Don't let the wild boars or snakes come around! I truly admire all of your well thought out plans, and then your implementation of these ideas! A true genius! Bell well and I look forward to your next video!

18:44 Quick question... given the amount of work required to make the shakes (wood roof tiles), wouldn't it be faster to split bamboo in half and layer them like barrel roof tiles? I worry about the wood you're using rotting over time if they're not a natural wet wood like Cedar... Making barrel roofing out of split bamboo would likely be faster and be just as protective.
@lelyanra
@lelyanra 2 года назад
it would, but he is doing this way to utilize wood that is already cut and dry
@The_Foreman

A bamboo roof would hold up about as long as his leaf roof has. With some kind of sealant, a wood tile roof, no matter the wood, would last much longer.
@aboveallthingslove6349
@aboveallthingslove6349 2 года назад
@@The_Foreman Bamboo would last way longer than the leaf roof and would be less vulnerable to sparks from the fire when the wind kicks up. But wood is his best option other than fired tiles as long as they don't check too much. Those are not split cedar shakes and the timber they came from is very twisted in growth so there is a lot ofup grain on the surface to absorb water which could cause checking, cracks and twisting after installed and I don't know if he has enough nails for the job... we'll see.
@The_Foreman
@The_Foreman 2 года назад
@@aboveallthingslove6349 I meant more on the scale of things. His leaf roof has lasted a couple of years, and a bamboo roof might last up 2-4 years. The wood shingles should last 10+ years. Especially if he can find some way to add water damage protection. As for nails, I'm fairly certain at this point that he buys the stock metal for all of his blacksmithing projects. It might take him a while, but he'll be able to make enough nails.
@lelyanra
@lelyanra 2 года назад
@@The_Foreman and since this planks seem dense enough, dude could apply a flame coating, which would halfway preserve it in case he doesnt find some sort of sealant (doesn't seem like he'll find enough tree sap to do it, maybe CaO whitewash would do the trick? he seems to have abundant supply of it to make concrete bricks.)

Using boards for the roof is an interesting idea, but I think that the boards need to be somehow protected from water, burned or impregnated with resin, but this will take a lot of time and effort. Wood chips left from the boards are perfect for mulching plants. This will reduce the number of weeds.
@ALWhiteAuthor
@ALWhiteAuthor 2 года назад
You need to do the taper on your froe (wood splitter) in the other direction. The blade should go on from the far end like a tomahawk with a wider taper in front of the cutting edge. That way, when you strike the blade when batonning through the wood it will tighten on the handle rather than keep coming off.

When it comes to the Roofing idea, wouldn't it be easier and better to use split bamboo interlocked into eachother? Might be easier to get hold of and less labor intensive along with making it a strong roof? I'm skeptical about the wooden shingles as they might rot faster than expected.

A "Saw Horse" would also be advised, you could do more of your work standing, instead of hunched over. More control, and better for your back.

Love your work. For roofing, why not use bamboo ? Cut in half, you got half cercle gutters. Cover the roof with it, open side up, then cover with other half to cover the joints. You then can use half bamboo pipe for the cornices, and smaller bamboo pipe for gutters to recuperate rain water for garden or channel it to the pond. As for the planks they could make nice furniture or even partition walls (or even boxes to store corn or other stuff like tools, etc...)

Nice idea going planks but. With your water wheel a sawmill would save you so much time and let you get four times as many planks out of the tree.

Yes I agree I think it would be better to make tiles for the roof than using planks. The planks will work but the roof not need to be repered

I really like the new script to describe what your doing! You always work so hard! I think the wood is a better idea than clay tiles! Either way it's a lot of work! Have a wonderful week! The chickens are going to be great! Eggs and meat! They love fresh fruit! Jack fruit and watermelon is their favorite!

Since you will be using wood planks as a roof, have you considered sealing them with a primitive paint?

A draw knife and shave horse would be very useful. Look up how to make them. They would make woodworking projects much easier.
