We're so excited because we've never brought you this architectural style before. This Swiss Chalet is in our beloved Natchez right on the bluff. Edelweiss appears to be based on a design in E.C. Gardner's "Illustrated Homes," published in Boston in 1875. It was built in 1883 for coal dealer Joseph O'Brien.
Swiss Chalet Revival architecture developed in the United States, emulating the original Swiss chalet style of Switzerland. The style was popular in the U.S. in the early 20th century.
The style is characterized by:
• gabled roofs with wide eaves
• exposed construction beams, including large brackets
• decorative carving and moldings
• balconies
• large windows
• weatherboarding, usually painted, often in bright colors
This property was lovingly restored in 2008 and is now the town home and office of New York Times Bestselling Author, Greg Iles. Overlooking the mighty Mississippi River on the bluff of downtown Natchez, Edelweiss is the best example of Swiss chalet architecture in Mississippi.

I was working in Mississippi a number of years ago and took the opportunity of making a day trip to Natchez. I remember seeing Edelweiss prior to its restoration and thinking how out of place it looked but also very charming and hoping someone would restore it. So nice to see that someone did.

Edelweiß is a Beautiful Seven Petal tipped, protected Flower! In the Swiss Alps & Especially Deutschland! Marvelous Home! Love The View! I must obtain Greg‘s Southern Man Book! How exciting! I am reminded of The Home named San Francisco on River Road, Louisiana! It was built for a Bavarian Prinzessin…I have read that they had incredible all night long parties there! I especially enjoyed seeing the humble "camp chair" in one of the offices. It really endeared me to the owner. They make great extra seating because you can tuck them away in a closet when not in use. Great minds truly do think alike!😂

My friend is from Germany and Edelweiss is her favorite flower. She said they grow naturally way up on the mountian and her uncle would take hours to hike up one and bring her back just one bloom.. What a lovely and perfect name for this home!

Have you ever done a segment about “ Natchez Under the hill❓”. There is so much history even though there is only one road left. I think it would be fun for you too give us a tour what is left. I think I remember while I was on a tour that Natches under the hill. Was pretty seedy back in the day and I believe it one time there was a race track, but of course the Mississippi river has swallowed up so many roads.. business & homes..

The Chalet or localized as "Tsalet" was the popular architectural style in the American Period in the Philippines during the pre-WW2 years (1910s-1930s)! Then it got replaced by mid-century modern bungalows after the war.

Love Friday videos! The roof line of the house and the edelweiss design remind me of our trip to Germany and Austria. So much charming carved wood. There are a few houses in my neighborhood that are the 1950s version of chalet/storybook style. You have definitely soaked in the history of your new adopted town, and these tours are great. I liked the kitchen on this one, but the master bath needs a 'way back' machine, lol. From the screening of the lower level on the exterior, I was surprised to see bedrooms there. I wonder, if like other houses you've shown us, the horses were once housed there. The views of the River are incredible. I hope those impressive walls will keep flood waters at bay. Hope all is well in Arkansas.

Beautiful old house and architecture. Grateful the interiors have retained it's original fireplace mantel, woodwork, doors, stairway, railings, etc. Though l am not impressed with the modern furnishings but l am grateful for all the original details, architecture etc. preserved inside and outside. I wish I could see the original kitchen. I wish the original kitchen was still in my 1890 home. I have the 1940's kitchen and prefer it over the new ones. They will date and need to be changed in 10 years.

You haven't heard of New Glarus, Wisconsin:) This was a fun tour of a really unique property. I had a mini freak out when you entered that lower level bedroom with those swan pillows on the bed. We just purchased some tiles by the same artist as accents on the Victorian fireplaces we're adding to our Vic main suite! Anyway, you looked fab, the video was great and the music was perfection:) Thanks for sharing.

I love those front doors! While it's a beautiful home, esp. the floors, the architecture doesn't speak to me like a Queen Anne does. No offense, it was cool to see the difference and the fact that it's so old and standing is awesome. I must've lived in a Queen Anne in one of my past lives or something, cuz I just love,love,love them!

It is interesting they think this to be swiss, swiss chalets don't look like this but it is for sure Australian architecture. It is my favorite style house called Queenslanders. Australia does have a huge swiss and German settlement. So there was a definite influence.

Well... I think the exterior is breathtaking.. But, I don't know... I think, to me, at least, I feel like - if you buy a beautiful, old house, your decor should at least lean a little that way, too... You know, what I mean? Because as it stands, the exterior makes some promises, that the interior can't keep.. Not, that it has to look like a museum, but I just think, that when you restore and decorate, you really should look at the age and style of the house, and go from there!
