7:10 Sony just put up a blog that they are releasing an update on the portal to allow you to sign into wi fi with extra steps ! Makes that hand-held much more feasible and accessible!
Finally, I got my hands on one yesterday at Target (6/17/24) Playing Helldivers 2 ran surprisingly well. Indie and old-school games run awesome. It's all about your inertnet connection.
I agree with her wholeheartedly. I live alone in my house and sometimes I don’t feel like sitting at the couch to play a game. The Portal allows me to play anywhere at home including out on the patio and it’s been worth it. It’s something you don’t think you need until you have one.
Still not worth it. Sorry. If you can’t get to a tv or something I get it. One tv, and your kid wants to play something. But paying 200 just to sit in another place in the house is dumb when you can just sit on the coach or bed. It’s not worth the price unless it’s a needed option for location
But you CAN play this on a bus or in the car IF you have a WiFi jet pack with you. That’s where I feel this is actually the most useful because with Wi-Fi in your pocket you can play it ANYWHERE
I don't have a portal but I can relate exactly to your experience with remote play on my steam deck it's so convenient and I've honestly switched to handheld gaming for 99% of the time these days.
I’ve had mine for a couple of months and I love it. The resolution is fantastic, the stream is smooth and looks great. The added wi-fi update is a huge benefit.
The haptic feedback on the portal is great! The best word I have for it is heft. I too seldom get the television so it's nice to have options across 2 platforms now.
It already earned the monicker "DadStation". In all households where multiple people share the living room TV... or where parents want to be near their children and still be able to play... it's a godsend! Maybe it'll be a MomStation too?
I bought one a week ago and I’m enjoying it. Kicking back and playing Yakuza is a game changer rather than slugging it in front of the tv sitting up right. As a dad the kids are always on the tv at the weekends especially in the winter, the portal allows me to play my ps5 whilst they hijak the tv. Fast paced games, not so much but rpgs, puzzle and offline campaigns are a great experience 🙌🏼
I've been doing remote play for years now. Had a PC connected to my bedroom TV. Then used the backbone with my cell. Both did a great job. Now i have a portal and it's fantastic. I pay an extra 10 bucks for 100gb hot spot on my phone and play it everywhere.
@@femtrooper why would i. Only thing I do wish is if they had a slot for a sim card. For those that want to give it a cellular connection instead of using the phone to hotspot.
I have one and loving it too! I love the idea of sitting in my backyard enjoying the weather and playing! I still play some of the big graphic intense games ony tv simce I like to see those on the big screen but its sooo nice for everything else to be able to play in bed or ourside. I havent taken it away from home but i really just eanted the freedom to just be in different places in my house. Definitely makes it easier to play more amd the screen is really pretty and the size ia great. It also feels very nice to hols and i love having the same haptics as ony controller.
I ended up loving mine. I bought it for the sole purpose of playing FF7 Rebirth at work and it worked flawlessly. I wouldn't usually be able to log like 60+ hours in a game in three weeks but that's how it happened! It's definitely inspired me to dig deeper into the PS4/5 catalog as a result. The killer is that your performance is based on how good your internet is. I made sure to wire my ps5 and look into other stuff on my modem for the most streamlined experience, so thankfully it's been mostly ok.
I purchased the Portal a couple months ago, and it's been used every single day since then. I've beaten already 3 jrpgs since using it, and im currently playing through Final Fantasy 3 and soon SMT 3, and SMT V. It's not for everyone, and it does cost a pretty penny, but if you want to be able to enjoy gaming on the couch and not be bound to a gaming space (mine being a corner of my bedroom), then yea its great to have the option to do so. Also, I purchased grips for the thumbsticks to give a bit more height for comfort reasons. Not saying they weren't comfortable before, but for games like Destiny 2 and Hell Divers 2, it's nice to have more control of my aim while using the Portal.
I just bought a ps portal recently and can't really get into right now because I'm living in a hotel (house caught fire).... But from what I can tell when I do go back home and connect my ps5 to my fiber internet that I'm in for a treat with the portal.
Great review, I love my portal! I got tired of always needing to sit in front of the tv to play PS5 games. With this, I can play PS5 quality games anywhere in the house especially an hour or two before sleeping in bed. I've used Remote Play for years on my phone, and I know the portal isn't for everyone but I have so much use for Remote Play that this just takes it to another level and is very worth it for me!
I don’t have a PS five so I don’t have any use for this right now, but I’m pretty happy with my steam deck which you know gives me the same sort of thing being able to play on the couch while somebody’s watching TV or something. I absolutely love the handheld form factor, and the ability to just pick something up and start playing without having to mess around with the TV and remote controls and powering on a console, just being able to grab some thing and play
I’ve had mine for a week now and I’m loving it. I’m using it more than my Switch, using it around my home. I love the form factor as it is just a stretched DualSense I’ve always preferred the stick placements on all Sony’s controllers and I don’t have to buy any games for it as I have most of my PlayStation games bought digitally
I love and own a portal myself! Couple other notes for those that might be interested in one: you may have to have your PS5 directly hard lined to a modem to avoid lag. This happened to me and once I hard lined my PS5, it dramatically improved the Portal experience. Second point, most games work great on the Portal. The main games that are known to be terrible on the Portal are online multiplayer games like Rocket League and Apex.
I bought one a couple of months ago and love it. Love the ps controller already so the design is perfect. So much more comfortable to hold than a switch.
Great review! The tech nerd in me really wants to get one but I can't justify one for myself since I don't play my PlayStation 5 that often. When I do, it's usually the PSVR or PSVR2 (no joke!). My wife, who has her own PS5 and loves handhelds, would most likely absolutely love this thing. I definitely would like to try one and see if she likes it too after all the positives you had to say about it. Thanks and take care!
Yeah I have the PS Portal and I have found RPG's have been my favorite genre to play. What is interesting is that remote play has been around since PS3, and I tested it with my Samsung S7+ while playing Forbidden West and it was so laggy! The PS Portal has no lag...at all! I am short sighted and on some text heavy games, I am loving the Portal. Other things I have found is that the volume IS TOO LOW haha! Ergonomically this is the best feeling thing on the market. The fact that it doesnt have computing capabilities means that it is relatively light.
I have enjoyed my portal when I’m actually able to connect to the PS5. I spend more time trying to figure out why the portal isn’t connect it than I actually get to use it.
I’m such a handheld gamer so I definitely thought about purchasing this! But I just don’t think it’ll run that great with my Wi-Fi! I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
Great review!!! Bought mine day 1 and have been so impressed with it. Like you said, I’ve been flying through PS4/PS5 games like never before, and it’s got the best LCD screen I’ve ever seen imo. Only downside for me is the battery life, I feel like I’m always charging that thing lol.
Love the enthusiasm. Not for me but totally see the use case and interesting/smart on Sony’s part to serve this segment of the market, especially given how much ppl were making fun of it pre-release/early days of the device.
I’m loving the PS Portal. I was skeptical at first but it totally won me over. As someone who prefers the handheld experience, this fits my gaming needs. Here’s to hoping we get another Vita though….never mind that might be asking for too much 🤣
@femtrooper I only found out after a tech review I didn't think it would work so I didn't try it but most phones r on a 5g network nowadays so it's a strong stable connection
I'm looking forward to see this Portal stream Madden and other sports titles from anywhere in the house as long as like you said Fem, if I can get good wifi connection. Thanks for your honest review on this device that has been getting so much attention recently
Sony needs to release a proper handheld that can play games natively. I've used remote play on my computer and tablet, but it's just too choppy alot of the time to be worth getting a handheld that can only replicate that same experience. I need to try reducing the video quality maybe, because otherwise it should work flawlessly (my console is hardwired at home, and i've tested the remote device on multiple high bandwidth wifi connections. I think if i wanted to do it while travelling i would carry a little ethernet cable, and connect my macbook to a wired internet connection at hotels if they have it.
Excellent review, Paige! I got the Portal at launch and didn't play it much...but ever since we've found out we have a baby on the way I've been playing games portably a bit more. I tend to play PlayStation games quite a bit more nowadays than I do my Switch, so having a handheld way to play through my backlog is great. Streaming the games isn't ideal, and there is lag at times, but I know I can get through a lot of JRPGs and shorter indie titles on the Portal without much lag. The Portal feels SO much better to hold than the Switch imo as well!
The one feature that's keeping me from buying one, its the inability to get a docking station and play through it on another TV, as I currently use my PS4 (basically as a streaming machine for my PS5). Glad you liked it though!
I recently got a steam deck and it’s been a huge game changer. I can even use it to stream my Xbox and play games on there while being remote and not glued to a TV. Totally worth the investment! I can imagine the PS Portal is just as good 🎉
Just a small note, the gameplay you recorded is recorded in 30 fps (or 60 but you exported your final video at 30fps), that makes the gameplay look probably more laggy. Great video though, new sub to the channel.
I want to like the portal but it’s hard to justify. PS Remote app on an iPad using a PS4 controller is already great. There’s a work around to get PS Remote app on the steam deck as well. Almost jealous of anyone that has found the portal useful. Great review!
4:18 my OG switch is TV mode only So that said the Switch pro controller feels very sturdy and comfortable. And the switch lite feels very cozy in my hands. No cheapness there.❤🎉
To be able to not play it on my tv all the time is a big reason I’d want it. Ever since getting Steamdeck I’ve enjoyed lounging on the couch or bed playing my games. Maybe one day
The Switch has spoiled me, and to a certain degree ruined the experience of the PS5 for me, because I'm now a gamer that wants to be comfortable at all times and not stuck at my monitor and gaming chair. The Portal has really gotten me back into gaming on my PS5. I've put more hours into my PS5 since getting the Portal. It really works well for me, especially as I have a great Wi-Fi connection. But it is a case by case situation. great video
I got an ROG Ally which is one of those handheld PCs, but XBox has crossbuy/cross save with some titles, so you can also install and play the same games on a PC or this Ally. That's how I played Infinite Wealth too (and Persona 3: Reload). On TV I would play using the Xbox, and then in other rooms, or on the go I would sync my save and use the Ally. It's not a totally seamless experience, and it definitely costs more than the PS5/Portal combo, but overall it worked pretty well and it made it a lot easier to play games that would otherwise be limited to the Xbox alone.
The thing that makes the portal not good for me is the fact that I'm mostly a physical games person. I thought about it and if i ever actually wanted to play it outside I would only really be able to play 1 game where ever I take it, that would be whatever game I left in the PlayStation, since I don't have a big collection of digitally games. So while it would still be some what useful it would kind of defeat the purpose of having a portable device, not being able to have access to my whole library. Glad you are enjoying it though. I'm still contemplating maybe getting it. If there is ever a major price drop. This would mainly be to use it at home in bed if I wanna lay down and game
Yes, it is dependent on what’s in your console if it’s a disc which is fine for me since I play one game at a time but I could see that being frustrating.
I was waiting for your thoughts on the PS Portal since I saw it on your Instagram post. Glad to see that you’re loving it! I’m still on the fence about getting one. My wifi is pretty good, but when i tried using remote play on my laptop or iPad it would say “weak connection” and disconnect. Not sure if it would be any better with the Portal.
Hmmmm that’s tough!!! If you are getting a weak connection with the remote play it could be an indication that the Portal may not perform as well…but I don’t know for sure!!! All I can say is that when it works, it works amazing and it works pretty much flawlessly for me. It’s great!
Great video. I’m right there with you I love my portal. Made me not even touch my Xbox. My rotation has just been ps5, switch and steamdeck mostly. I apologize if you mentioned it in another video but if you haven’t yet definitely should try unicorn overlord. That game on switch is only reason haven’t been playing ps5 as much lately.
@@femtrooper i can understand that it’s not for everyone. Didn’t think it would hook me but it just did. I think the open world tasks did it for me and art work.
what kind of connection would you need to have a decent experience with this system? i've been looking into it but worried my connection might not be up to snuff. great video!
I have a legion go and the back bone one for phones. Got tired of having to take my phone out of its case to use the backbone so i just got the portal. Currently setting up the portal so im Hoping it works just as good as the phone app.
Don’t even think about pulling this bad boy out in the car i have go5g plus plan with T-Mobile iPhone 15pro I don’t know if it’s service or or portal but trying to connect via mobile hotspot is where this handheld lost dramatically hoping for an update to fix this issue haven’t watch ur vid yet but just wanted to throw this out there for anyone looking to buy
I’ve heard that’s a good way to do it but I’ve never tried it! If it works, that’s fantastic! It seems like the Portal isn’t the only way to play the PS5 portably.
When i wanted one, this was out of stock. So i ended up picking the logitech Gcloud. Which was so great to remote play the ps5. I mean the tv is next to me, but i just like playing in handled better. No need for more reasons that way 😅 Even tho i played from my bed room, i didnt get any lag or stuttering. However now i only have the switch, so remote playing is from the past for now. Great memories from it. It's really impressive to play top graphic games on such device 🥰
Go to your network name on PS5, press options then advanced settings and switch your MTU to manual. Then lower it to 1473 from the default 1500, and it'll bump that 90% flawless to 99.9% perfect all the time... 😎👍
I absolutely love mine and with little ones running around... it is a massive helper in allowing me to get thru my games. Streaming isn't as laggy as it used to be and Lately, I use mine more than my tv setup and the reaction and lag so good, this is such an amazing screen and since a basic controller is 100$, it doesnt seem that expensive in comparison. I have always wanted a handheld with the power of a PS5 and a portable playstation. The portal is premium quality and I have no bad things to say. people hated on it.... They don't know what their missing. I wouldn't play competitive shooters, but for my playstation story single players games... IT IS GOLD.
I love my portal. I also found a lot more use in it than I anticipated. I just beat new game plus on Stellar blade and most of both playthrough were done on the portal. Mine was a gift from a friend though so I can’t really complain or talk about money spent cost etc 😂😂😂
I'm a security officer work 12hr shifts at a boring place where I have time to play games and on the fence about getting it because I would have to use my phone hot spot or work wifi which is a decent one and I'm currently playing god of war and remnant 2 type games would this be a good purchase for me
I've been in two minds about buying this for a while now, I always thought you had to be in range of the PS5 to play, the fact it will switch the machine on remotely from anywhere with good WiFi is absolutely nuts, I may well pull the trigger
I was really happy to see you made a video about the portal, but I still don't feel like I have heard anyone really explain why I would want this instead of using a phone clip on my dualsense using remote play. Also every other time I launch it remotely, I have to manually turn my ps5 back on even though the settings have it launch remotely
I want to grab one, but I am being super stubborn when it comes to buying it. I want to buy it in a physical store and not online, and my one Walmart in town just never has them. I should just order it directing from Sony, but again I am being stubborn lol. Mainly want it for my daughter's so they can play roblox together in the same room!
I'm definitely part of the portal party and the party has been amazing. Since I got my hands on mine usually real deep, I play war gamings world of tanks Consoles, I also play hell divers. I do FC24 and grand theft auto with my setup. I get no problems or distortions. I use a Netgear Nighthawk That makes my gaming experience perfect. My console is hardwine Ask for any one that wishes to play handheld. I do recommend the device, but don't treated like A Nintendo switch only dust streaming with high quality internet. But the experience is foreign mersive and amazing. I have found myself playing left PlayStation. 5 and PlayStation, 4 games on my Samsung television and more on the PlayStation portal. After I open my phuton, end, play a bitch before I go to bed
@@femtrooper i understand i got the zfold 5 so its a pretty big screen and i even have a device from amazon that lets me snap a ps5 controller to it. That being said i wish sony would release another portable console like the vita
This also changes everything because it shows that Sony is recognising the value of portable gaming again. I hope this is a sign we will get a new generation of PSP soon.
loving your vibes nd excitement. I wanted clarification. Is your ps5 console connected exclusively to wifi? Or is your ps5 connected w a wire thru the ethernet port?
Why would you want to stream your game in your house you ask?? Isn’t it obvious the kids want to watch movies the partner doesn’t want to be alone they want you next to them so this solves that issue so yeah i will be streaming in all rooms of my house, i dont have one yet but picking it up tomorrow
guess my biggest issue is that I cannot play on the portal and also have someone else use the ps5 for streaming or something. I know there are ways around this, but too much investment as I also don't play switch in bed :P. otherwise great review. If they at some point made it possible to play stuff on both portal and ps5 then maybe :)
I love ur channel just found it.. I just got a portal... But I want to move.. my PS 5 to another room... An I want all needed accessories... At least a screen saver.. what store would I have the best luck finding a screen protector
I actually sold mine just recently and got a Steam Deck. I just never ended up using it because the latency bugged me, which was probably more of my WiFi’s fault than the device’s.
I was thinking about getting the portal, but chose the steam deck instead. Have you thought about the steam deck? I’ve only had it for about a month and a half but haven’t even touched it my switch since I got it and I was an exclusive switch player. Love your videos girl!!
@@femtrooper yeah, I’m a big physical collector too, but unfortunately that really only relates the to the switch nowadays. That’s all out the window pretty much for any other console considering that they all require huge downloads when you buy the disc, it’s like we’re just buying a product key or something. It’s crazy. But I love my steam deck tho girl. I know you would too.
I can't seem to play games in bed or in a different position besides on the couch. I never get comfortable so do you have a pillow or something that you use when you are playing? Also, how do you cook and play at the same time?! Witchcraft I say!😂
The OLED Switch is insanely good if you are a handheld player. If you like the Portal, OLED is a must to try! Switch 2 won't be OLED from all reports so it's definitely a unique/quality experience.
Unbelievable. They love to release two or more versions of every system. I thought for sure the Switch 2 would start with OLED regardless of having an inevitable second model. So frustrating.
Or just get a Ps vita which comes with an oled and feels more premium than a Switch. Plus a lot of games that are on Switch were first on the Vita. And you can remote play with ps4 and ps3, it got a big psp and ps1 library and a lot of extra’s/ emulators if you mod it :)
