I feel like at that time that episode with the stan is like a PSA to all stans in not just the Sonic fandom but all fandoms like "You guys have a problem."
if anything it shows how much the sonic fanbase is so unselfaware about how they behave. so many times there were direct jabs but it goes over their heads. sayin stuff like "sega is making fun of itself " "sega finnaly saying somthing i agree with " and the fact that they agree with the roast to thselves just makes makes it all the more true xD
I wouldn't call fake woke, that way of doing things os how the loud majority of woke do things and that is why a lot of people (even if not the majority of allies) turn away or think os bullshit.
The real over simplified short version is that Sonic Boom TRIED to be an action show for like one episode, realized they had no animation budget and basically became Sienfeld for kids (in that all the characters where really bitchy and sarcastic and made odd/funny observations instead of fighting)
@@gregthehedgehog0956same, and for some reason, Sonic Underground is my most favorite. Mostly cuz I watched it and loved it as a kid, and don’t want to watch it again cuz Ik it’s worse than I remember.
Funnily enough, by showing this kind of humour early on to children, they will not understand most of it but will subconsciously develop it later in life as they grow.
Ikr one time I randomly remembered a joke from a cartoon I watched not thinking about it that much when I first watched it but then thinking to myself "holy shit"
"No way this is a penis joke." There are only two kinds of jokes you can make with a bald egg-shaped man peeking out of the shower, and a penis joke is one of them.
"would kids even get that joke" by my own experience no kids won't, rather it's most likely for the parent stuck watching with their kid, the kid will most likely be like us gen z and melenials looking back to "the good old shows from our childhood" and she all the adult humour in the show. And knowing kids they wouldn't even notice the jokes, and would instead be "hey blue gotta go fast guy is talking let's laugh"
I mean Spongebob in its first few seasons pulled the exact same thing. Sure there were jokes kids wouldn't understand but the adults watching it can get a few laughs in too. That's the power of creating good content for general audiences.
@@refertopfp9627 even if i was that doesn't really make my point any less valid. children today do not care about sonic the only ones who care about it are people who are already familiar with sonic. hence why its made for manchildren.
Knuckles’ “Beat-up-the-biggest-one” and the feminist clip, I’ve seen them over 100 times, and I never get sick of it. Also, Boom Knuckles, the stereotypical big-tough-stupid-one of this series, understands the concept of feminism better than modern Disney does. *Think about that.*
A lot of kids shows have more adult/double meaning jokes for the parents, older siblings, legal guardian or whoever responsible who got stuck watching over the kid
Definitely, the Muppet Show from the 70s was built on this premise. The smart, witty, and adult jokes sailed over the heads of the kids who were too enamored with the muppets themselves. XD
@@IliyaMoroumetz it's debatable whether the Muppets was ever a "kid's show" in the first place. The pilot was literally titled "The End of Sex and Violence on Television".
I watched this as a kid and the jokes completely went over my head, so I got my enjoyment from the action. Then I found it again recently and realised that this was one the good ones😂
From what I've heard, this was "supposed" to be an awful tie-in with the abysmal sonic boom video game, but they were given a terrible timeslot that no kid would be up to watch the show at and they just went "f*** it" and made this masterpiece of comedy and old-school references with fandom in-jokes galore.
@@toffeefeathersThe first episode came out a few days before the game, but the game was definitely in development for way longer because of how much longer it takes to make video games.
I used to watch half an episode before going to school every morning I'm talking about... 13 years old? I'm 19 now, so yeah, it was back then I was pretty innocent even then, being autistic and all But oh, it feels so good to know this show has in some way given shape to my sense of humour I think i get where all my sassyness comes from
So Aliciax, fun fact! That episode with the fanfiction is even better/worse than you even realize! You see, the whole thing seems to be a parody of Misery (1990), a movie about a famous author who gets in a car accident and is rescued by a woman who is his “biggest fan”, who takes care of him at her house in the middle of nowhere. He must try to escape her because she’s SO obsessed with him that she’s preventing him from healing properly (and I’m fairly sure there’s an infamous scene where she… I won’t talk about it, it’s equal parts spoilery and fucking brutal) and making him rewrite his books into different, twisted shit to suit her fantasies. The fact that the writers would parody such a gut wrenchingly appalling movie in their kids cartoon and also use it to comment on cringe Sonic fans and such is just so fucking amazing to me.
No, that's not what the writers did. During the production of this episode, the staff of Sonic Boom researched more of the general fandom rather than the Sonic fanbase specifically.
@@Kitsunekone No, they were not. Here's a quote from Doug Lieblich, the episode's writer that disproves this: "(Mark the Tapir)'s not based on anyone specific. Just an obsessive fan character." And a quote from producer Bill Freiberger: "Mark is 100% NOT based on CWC. He is a general fan type. We've done many blue arm jokes in the series. Not a clue."
It was a show advertised to kids but it is really for people who played sonic games, games in general and most of all people who HATED the fact that the game of the same name was ABSOLUTELY ASS. You'd enjoy it. Side note: Best one out of these is the slight jab at nintendo with Sonic wanting to go tap Princess Peach, but the funniest one is Amy not being able to express herself one. Not only because it shows Sassy Sonic but long time Sonic fans all know Amy has a teetering bridge between Cute and awkward forwardness to Sonic to borderline psychotic.
This show was no different from the cartoons and movies that millennials use to watch back in the 90's. There were a lot of adult humor/jokes in pretty much every 90s cartoons that went way over our heads until we became adults to look back at them. They were there mainly for the parents who were watching the show with their kids.
I wonder sometimes whether it's for the parents, or for the writers themselves who think of it, cackle, and can't help but put it in. I think a lot of comedians really make jokes to make themselves laugh.
I was waiting the _whole_ reaction for 12:02 _…and it was even better than I could possibly have hoped._ You paused at the BEST moment and unknowingly set up that Knuckles rebuttal to Amy to just blow your mind even more. Even with the little hint of woke Knuckles earlier from 2:32, the shock that spreads across your face to that final moment is utterly priceless. Honestly, Knuckles' moments alone are worth watching for. He's the best. Absolutely iconic.
@@toasturhztoastbunz896 I think you're misreading things here. First is that it's a _kid's show_ which is exactly why one of the important things to periodically establish is clear moral principles. Even things like Eggman and the "bro code" for working with Tales is an example of that. Knuckles is the meathead but his heart is in the right place and he is characterized in the show by having often jarringly insightful commentary. That's because he doesn't think inside the box that everyone else does. That's why this is a topic that his character gets used for. Amy as the "girlfriend" character is designed where it's easy to mistake moments of personal empowerment as being representative of feminist agenda, when in fact, that runs against the underlying purpose of feminist movements rising up explicitly to establish gender equality. This moment isn't making fun of feminism so much as it is providing a clear and obvious example of a well-intentioned misstep, followed by an observational correction. It's humorous because it's insightful and it interjects at a point that wouldn't be expected as it undercuts the framework of the scene of the penalty kick. As a kids show, it's an example where you can interject into every day conversations to prevent unintentional self-sabotage without being adversarial. It's not making fun of feminism at all, it's helping to recognize what it is and what it isn't - which is why you get that in a kid's show. Kids learn by example of witnessing scenarios and how they play out. They might not get why the scene is funny, but the way it's directed still makes it memorable. This is why good kids shows deal with WAY more complex topics than people assume, because they're not just over-simplified entertainment.
Shadow's va had way to much fun saying that line I think "You bring shame to all hedgehog kind and for that you shall parish" Damn Shadow who pissed in your cereal?
To answer your question, yes kids understood what a lot of these jokes meant. I understood a lot when I was young, now the newer generations know wayyyy too much
As a kid back then, watching cartoon like this always went over my head cus I never paid attention to the dialogue, I always paid attention to the visuals and the action. Now going back, this makes it more enjoyable lol
Never watched this show fully, only checked the funny moments and that was enough for me to label Knuckes full brawn over brain guy so as the first time seeing that soccer clip, I was also speechless, followed by a maniac laugh after seeing Aliciax reaction after pointing out exactly the same thing seconds before xD
The funny thing is, compared to most family shows, both old and new, this is still pretty tame. Seriously, kids shows have been making jokes like this for years. How are people still surprised by this?
Because people don't respect animation that isn't aimed towards adults and views kids cartoons as a bunch of fat jokes so hearing the cleaver dialogue surprises people
This show was taken before its time. Or perhaps it was taken down in its prime. Either way, it was set up to fail by placing it early in the morning and onto networks where people wouldn't think to look for it.
12:32 - This actually caused a shitstorm online when it came out. I think it just set a target on the sonic fanbase that.... well..... it kind of backfired. If you want a laugh, have a dive into Sonic vs Birds of Prey. Thing is, you can't make fun of fans and a franchise that makes fun of itself and win....... and that's kind of what happened. Basically the BOP backers were salty that their movie flopped and was being out done by a movie about a small, very fast rodent. It was HILARIOUS Since.... or course the sonic fans jumped on the bandwagon with the BOP defenders..... which really pissed them off lol.
4:47 Well, the games themselves are meant for kids too, and even there Sonic gets sent to prison. Hell, Shadow’s tragic past is about how his best friend, a little human girl, got shot by soldiers sent by the government to kill everyone in the Ark.
@@giannicolamatteo8155 It wasn’t as if they had sex. He was just revived. But they could’ve left the kiss out. It would have worked well enough if it was just wishing for him to be alive.
I think this show is a good example of "Yeah, nothing bad happens, so kids are able to watch it," but doesn't necessarily mean it was intended entirely FOR children. This was just a bunch of writers having a good time! It's so great to see people making a good product that can be enjoyed by people of many ages, instead of handcrafting something more on the lifeless side to "suit" children. This show's writing is REALLY WITTY! If you haven't watched it yet, definitely give it a try!!!
6:11 No. but I did staple my finger on purpose only to be shocked and cry then think it’s cool that it doesn’t hurt at all afterwards. At 6 years old. 😂
@@AceTechn0 idk how this show would dirty your mind either. If you don't understand the jokes then it still wouldn't do anything. Its not like its teaching you what the innuendo's meant
I don't think its aimed at kids lol, its FULL of references only the older fandom would get. Like sure, kids might find it fun anyway, but most of the jokes refer to adult life and sonic memes. Also we stan woke king knuckles.
"Is this a kids show?" Well you see the writers were being smart and made jokes that would try to appeal to older audiences that would get those kinds of jokes, that is the baseline for making a good kids show.
8:54 "When you live here, it makes me feel... angry, because you're a horrible roomate and nobody in this house likes you." Sonic CD: JP: its not true. US: *Yep that's actually true, eggman doesn't like you either in our kind of feature"
An absolutely amazing show, really wished that it got the attention before. But due to the bad reputation of the games it was dodged by many. Also Sonic Frontiers is a very fun game, hopefully you do try it out someday. A major step up compared to the last few games in my opinion
"You can't mention blood oaths to children!" Lady, I have a kid's show scene idea where a character is about to tell the aristocrats joke to a child. If you know, you know.
This was fun! Your laughter is contagious. I would recommend Frontiers though; it's pretty damn good, all the jankiness aside. Easily one of the better ones.
Still one of the best moments in the show is when Sonic and friends tried to beat the heat with a giant fan. Cue about two minutes of flying through the air shenanigans that’s fairly funny on its own. Cut to Eggman: “This heat is more oppressive than my father.”
Saw this and then saw that you were reacting to Invincible, Avatar the last Airbender, AND Attack on Titan. Three of my all time favorite shows. Immediately had to subscribe. Also I love the vibe you give off during your reactions. It’s kinda cozy. Perfect for snacking and binging. I haven’t even gotten the chance to dig into the live steams yet, but I’m 100% sure those are bangers too. Sorry for the essay, stay awesome, queen!
Omg!!! :D thank you for such a sweet comment and welcome to the channel. Pffft never be sorry for saying something nice :3 cause I sure as hell appreciate it
It's dumb enough that kids will like the action and the dumb jokes but smart enough to know that there's probably someone who's stuck watching it with them, so they throw in some very smart jokes for good measure. It's truly a masterpiece.
Knuckles: "Dude, Tails couldn't have been any clearer and you still miss the point!" * _moment of realization_ * Knuckles: "Whoa. Is this how you guys feel every time I open *my* mouth?" Sonic, Tails, and Amy: _[Agreeing and nodding quietly]_ Knuckles: "What are you doing with your heads?"
Kinda late to this but one show you might like is Scissor Seven. It's one of the best action comedy animes I've ever seen. Or Bluey. You will love it and you will cry from how wholesome it is. If you don't wanna cry from another kids show then disregard.
So some back story on Amy, in the early years of the comics she used a wish on the chaos emeralds to age herself to become more attractive to Sonic. At the time she did this, if my memory is right, she was only 7 years old as Sonic was in his early 20s. Sonic is aware of this and so are everyone who writes for her character in these shows. Also that princess in a castle bit Sonic talked about is both a call back and a reference. The reference is obviously to Mario and if Sonic were to save said princess it would be a win in their age old rivalry, the call back is to Princess Sally from the old chartoon show and comics who was one of his closest friends and confidant. Sonic also wouldn't make a pass at Sally as he knew Sally is a lesbian and already has her chosen partner. That is also cannon to the comics not fan.
10:15 Shadow really came in, called what Sonic made umgak, basically declared a Grudge because of it bringing shame to all of Hedgehog kind, and immediately got to work on Righting the Grudge...
Knuckles is the best character in the show. Every joke he makes is comedy gold. Sticks the Badger is also an absolutely hilarious character who makes the majority of the 4th wall jokes. Eggman is less of a villain and more of an annoying fanboy who more so enjoys tormenting sonic and friends than doing anything actually evil. Amy has more character in this show than she ever had before in any of the games and has more interests that go beyond loving sonic. Tails can be super smart one minute and then completely clueless the next. Allowing him to be both an intellectual foil to Eggman one minute and just another idiot hanging with his friends the next. And Sonic's sass levels are MAXED out. He has a quip ready for every occasion and it leads to some absolutely hysterical banter between the characters. The show ran for 2 seasons with 104 episodes and is honest to God the funniest Sonic show we've ever gotten. It is truly a shame that the games were so bad, which caused a lot of people to write off the show as being just a cheap tie in. It is such a good show and deserves more recognition. At least the meme's keep the shows spirit alive.
To your question, yeah. Blood oaths are a common thing I think. I vaguely remember making one with my friend when I was really young. But then again I also did voodoo with my sister when we were kids. Literally had a little doll we'd poke needles into to cause like back-pain to our enemies and stuff.
To be fair for the government officials and possums thing Sticks was saying she believes in all of these conspiracies and this show when I was watching it was on Cartoon Network. Some jokes flew over my head until my age levelled up and there were some quotes I did get then or interpreted differently because 12 year old me didn't compare at all to 19 year old me. The two episodes I remember anymore was when Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles formed a boy band to play rock music because Justin Beaver was using his pop music to take over the minds of girls and when Eggman tried to open a hotel. Other than those two episodes the only quote I remember anymore is "the soup is cold and the salad is hot how is that even possible"
Wasn't expecting this but hey, I get to be reminded of that time she called frontiers empty (& she's completely justified in that opinion, it isn't exactly original) Still can't wait to play frontiers
Knuckles as a feminist... I mean, his theme songs are always... 70's porn grove, so sure, why not... Eggman makes penis jokes a lot. Look up pingas. As far as sexual jokes in kids shows in general, animaniacs.
11:41 Sonic: Comin' for hard landing Tails. You got me covered? Tails: ..... Roger! Knuckles: Who's Roger? Roger: He's talking to me! Sonic: Thanks, buddy!
