You are better off in a two bedroom modern apartment than a king in any castle pre 20th century.

There is this castle in Finland "Olavinlinna". The castle almost fully covers the small island it is built on except for one spot. To make it harder to penetrate the castle builders came up with an idea. Toilet seats were built in a tower that was located over that spot. Basically the poop was utilized to make the steep terrain slippery and uncomfortable to climb.

Don’t forget to mention about the ‘Gong’ Farmer, the poor person that collected all the lovely waste products from the outside.

Growing up a buddy of mine lived in this super old cabin. Supposedly it was one of the oldest cabins in KY. It was built up in the New England region in the 1700's but I don't remember exactly where. It was later dismantled and brought to Kentucky in the 1960's and reassembled. The place was beyond beautiful and the logs used to build it were huge. Very little nails, mostly held together with wooden pins. Two stories with a basement and a real deal fireplace in every room. But long story short, the toilet was very similar to this. If you looked down the toilet, it was at least a 30ft drop to the bottom. And the toilet itself sat on a little platform in the corner. I remember thinking, if a man fell while taking a dump he probably wouldn't survive the fall lol. I'm sure they had updated it so raw sewage wasn't going into the ground because you could hear a fan running down there but who knows. It was a really neat place. Amazing to see how the people built stuff back in those days.

Those little rooms were called "garderobes", because clothes were stored in there to protect them from moths. Because moths hated the smell in there.
