Bro.. I've recently just discovered collective singing in school events and occasions/gatherings aren't a worldwide thing apparently. Idk why and how this is normalized in Philippines, as someone who's out of tune, this puts my mind at peace. It's alright if you can't sing (note to self). We also sang MAPA in our graduation 🥹 It's like an anthem
Normally, this event is only held in public schools. I’m a ’90s kid here in Cebu, and we did this during our graduation(grade school and high school). Mostly, only public schools do this.
We sing at least 3songs every graduation: (*does not apply to everyone) 1. A song for ourselves the students who work hard to graduate and to our future 2. A song for our parents/ guardian who took care of us and with us along our journey 3. A song to the teachers and the school for teaching us and letting us graduate
Hahaha.. 😂 The first time I got this reaction from Herrera's siblings, I was shocked because I thought singing in graduation ceremonies was normal all around the world. Like, from my entire life, this is all I know. We sang songs for our graduation ceremonies. Usually some songs may also be included depending on the institution. Generally, you can expect around three to five formal singing segments during the ceremony. Prayer Song: Sometimes it was performed by the students or the grad celebrants, or just a song lyrics from the big screen. Sometimes it was just a formal prayer, not a song. National Anthem-usually performed at the beginning after prayer. Provincial/or City Hymn-sung at the start. Farewell Song-often a graduation theme. In the middle/end of the program University Hymn after the Graduation Theme song. And additional if they will add a tribute for their parent's song. And maybe an icebreaker from boredom of the program, a sample from a popular student singer from their school. 😅 But the flow of the program depends on the universities's plans.
They turn to face their families sitting on the bleachers. I'm a photographer I covered a lot of grad ceremonies it always end up in a musical 😂. I'm used to it but I always got goosebumps everytime.
Yes mr sammy …every year the graduates choose their graduation song.. this are high school levels… songs usually motivates them to go to college with the exception of those who cannot really afford.. but still they find ways to continue their studies by being working students.. But.. SB19’s MAPA gave more meaning as it was a thank you song for the parents😊❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
i was able to hear MAPA Live last Saturday on their 6th yr thanksgiving concert! And oh boy ... the tears can't stop flowing on my cheeks! Feels surreal ... the best
As far as I know.... in the Philippines 🇵🇭 white coloured TOGA suit is used on Nursery/ Kindergarten, Elementary, & Highschool Graduation.... while the Black Toga suit is used for College, Master's Degree & Doctorate Graduation. 🤔
Dude, literally half of those kids grew up some of their parents working abroad (we call it OFW- overseas filipino worker) 😭😭😭 so MAPA probably hit right home❤ Okay i should stop cutting onions 🥲
Brings me back to my own graduation, I happened in a church and there was singing of church songs. I am now in my 50s so you see this type of musical celebration has been happening always 😊
Did you know that as a Filipino, I only recently discovered that this isn't a thing everywhere else other than here in the Philippines? We literally do this every graduation. We all have our graduation song. From elementary, highschool and college graduation. We normally will have a practice a week before graduation and the teachers will facilitate or any student body will lead the practice.
music is the tie that binds in the philippines, that's why international artists connect with pinoy audience so easily. thanks for this emotional reaction. and thank you for appreciating filipinos. ❤️❤️❤️
SB19's "Mapa" is a song that appreciates our parents hard work and sacrifices. Also, "Go Up" cuz it talks about reaching your dreams no matter what the hardship you will face.
Goosebumps. MAPA is going to be timeless classic for years to come. Such a really beautiful song by SB19. Our graduation song then was "Today My Life Begins" by Bruno Mars. SKL 😅
In Philipines Black gowns are for University Graduates , While White gowns are middle school graduates..Its a tradition for Every Graduation to have a Closing Songs of the graduates..Music is deeply rooted in our blood.
in some schools, they also sing Go Up and SLMT by SB19 as well. it's like encouragement to themselves and thanking their families for the support. i always get emotional when I see vids like this. esp during graduations. all the more I love sb19 huhu
Yes Amazing Sammy but it really happened in any graduation here in Phil, these I think song of SB 19 lead us/ guided us inspirations to ,pursue our dreams ,so thank you to Pablo who composed the song of MAPA
Actually, Graduation is an emotional because it is the time we part ways. Actually, i remember that was way back in 1985 we sang the song FAREWELL by Raymond Lauchengco. That is a touching song listen to that please. You will cry.
Here in the Philippines, graduates usually pick and practice a song to honor their parents and including the teachers, sometimes it also commemorates moments they spent with their classmates and their new chapter. It is beautiful. Usually its very touching and meaningful moment especially for the parents 💕
We also do a song at our graduations in Hawai'i, chosen by the graduating class. It might have some what to do with having a big Filipino community there. It could be a combination with Hawaiian cultures love of singing that has spread to Hawai'i melting pot of locals.
our graduation song(whatever it may be) adds to our core memories in school and the relationship we had with our friends and teachers! we enjoy it every time we practice and get really excited on the day we are able to sing it! As of MAPA, it's just so fitting to sing it to our parents after all the hard work in sending us to school and their sacrifices . thanks much for appreciating our customs.
Usually graduation song is practiced for two weeks before the graduation students are practicing it section by section two days before the graduation all sections will unite all sections as one
Every graduating students turned into a choir member, from church ceremonies to graduation rites. Almost a month of preparations and practices, enjoying the journey. God. I miss it.
Yes 1 or 2 songs are part of the graduation ceremonies, they selected based on the message of the song... the students practice prior the graduation day. Thank you mr Sammy for appreciating our beautiful culture ❤😊
I can still remember when me and my schoolmates sing at school for our elementary graduation, sadly it didn't happen in jhs and shs due to covid, but maybe as college student✨
🇵🇭 😄 During my time in our high school graduation more than a decade ago, we didn't do any choreography or the likes of arm and hand gestures, changing our body positions or orientations (or which way we're facing), using the lights from our phones or the like, nor whatnot else that are the same or similar to those, etc. for our songs in our high school graduation day. We just sang our songs in our high school graduation day, and if I can still remember them well, we sang a lot of songs: one is a doxology song or a universal prayer song, one is our batch or class graduation song and/or farewell song, and one is our batch or class graduation thanksgiving and gratitude song and/or journey song (I just don't remember well anymore what are the exact songs and song titles we sang and what they're genres and purposes are for our graduation), and those doesn't even include the singing of the Philippine national anthem, our official local city hymn, and our school hymn (My high school is in a highly urbanized city here in the Philippines, which also means that our city is an independent city, so we don't have the need to sing a separate official local provincial hymn, and our high school is not directly under the Department of Education in the Philippines, so we also don't have the need to sing a separate official local regional hymn and a separate official local schools division hymn.). Our school even have, requested and/or hired a pianist who is also a choir or chorale conductor and a vocal coach, instructor or teacher (who is also the pianist and choir or chorale conductor of our state college's choir or chorale for our school activities, holidays, occasions, observances, festivals, programs, and most especially for our Roman Catholic Christian Eucharist masses and church services held in our state college every first Friday of every month) to teach us the songs and on how to sing them during our graduation day practices and rehearsals that are held every afternoon to late afternoon after our class hours for weeks before our graduation day. I am personally an outcast among most Filipinos, because I am tone deaf and not even good enough in singing, and not even a little bit good enough in my honest opinion, although I like, love, enjoy, value and appreciate music a lot, and I like to hum and sing a lot only and most especially when I'm at home, and especially when I'm all alone, when I wash the dishes, take a shower or bath, or when I'm doing some other household chores or other leisure or recreational activities at home, so I also enjoyed the singing parts in our graduation day. By the way, I attended and graduated in and from a laboratory high school of or affiliated to the College of Education and Liberal Arts, serving as the college's laboratory school, that is of, under or within a public higher educational institution (specifically a local or regional state college) here in the Philippines.
The graduation cape depends on your education level. We wear white for primary and secondary graduation and black for college. The props will be depending on the school. Its not mandatory to have props but all graduations has songs provided to be studied in advance and practice before graduation
For start Elementary Schools in the Philippines they have to sing in unison every morning for the whole week to sing the national anthem Bayang Magiliw before class starts so they get used to be singing in unison together
Graduation DAY FILIPINOS , is very important to each of us inspite of alot of challenges, difficulties of life along the way. This is how we celebrate a very significant day, becuase EDUCATION and DIPLOMA is our weapon to work and go ABROAD . In Normal way, this is how we thanking and honor our beloved parents and guardians through music.
Music is a part of Philippine culture. We sing when we hear mass, during christenings, weddings, fiestas, birthdays, graduations, burials. Every occasion involves some form of singing. Even when we take a bath, we sing haha. We sing when we’re happy and even when we’re sad.
I think Filipinos can sing in unison because since grade school, all students always sing the National anthem every morning(7:30am) before entering each classroom. So it becomes natural for us to sing in unison like in the video ☺️
Each graduating class has its own song. In our batch, we sang "Goodbye High School" by Kaitee. This is how we can sing a long as a group during a concert haha we are well-trained to sing with people we don't even know! HAHAHA LOL
Yeah, growing up, if there is a function or celebration in the school (graduation, school founding day, millenium year, funerals of our teachers, etc) kids from nursery all the way to college do these things. My first singing recital (each class had a performance in nursery) was mj heal the world. During Christmas programs its all Jose Marie Chan Christmas songs (you should listen to him next!)
These pictures are their family pictures we usually have this graduation program always thanking everyone who helped us on our educational journey...... We believe that you will never make it without looking back where you came from.
i didn't know it was only from the Philippines that this kind of "graduation" song happens not until i stumble across a reaction video of graduation songs here on youtube couple years ago. I thought this was a thing that happens around the world seeing that we always do this but I guess it is not. And I have the chance to do this again on my senior high school graduation despite the strict regulation becuase of covid. I remember that all of us grade 12 students vote to a song that we will sing on our graduation day (we are told to only choose 1 song because of the strict regulation about covid so they limit the time that we are going to be inside a closed venue) and majority vote for 'Today My Life Begins' by Bruno Mars and that was it but after we finish singing that song during our graduation day and then proceed to the program but we continue to do it and also sang 'MAPA' and 'Huling Sayaw'. that is one thing that I love that happened that day. I see my friends cried their eyes out (i also cried hahaha) while singing 'today my life begins' especially after we go to where our parents/guardians were sitting and gave our diploma/medals/flowers and then after going back to our seats and calm ourselves we play the song mapa and then from there up until huling sayaw... up until now I still remember that scene clearly and that is just so beautiful for me. we practiced the song and how we are going to sing it in chorus, we also choreographed it and time when we will go to our parents/guardians week/s before d-day. in conclusion, this is a normal thing to do every graduation day here in the Philippines (kindergarten, grade 6, grade 10, senior high school (grade 12), college)
last two weeks of classes are allotted for practicing graduation song. i remember during our time, it's 'Farewell to you my friend'... and all that practice is almost a waste coz we were all crying, like realizing that, yeah i'm not gonna see most of these friends after graduation.... btw, i've seen a lot of reactors lately reacting to the emotional Jollibee commercials, maybe you can react to them too. it's funny and emotional..lol
I am a Filipino I thought doin singing performance during graduation is a normal celebration through out the world 😮. I just finally found out that only filipinos doin this...Will its a normal celebration for every graduation a white gown symbolizes high school graduation and the black gown symbolizes college graduation ... Thank you and you appreciate our celebration singing and dancing is a part of our culture thats why every celebration is memorable experience for us...😊
Those people who don't know Filipino culture will be surprised. From grade school to high school, we have many school events each year like this, where schools compete against each other in dancing. We call it the 'Playground Demonstration.'
for those graduating from Kindergarten, Elementary, and High School, we usually wear white togas for graduation but it still depends on the institution, they could wear different color of togas for photoshoots tho but white togas for the ceremony. for example, the school has different program such as Special Class, School of the Arts, etc. and if that program has a representation color of red, they wear their red-designed togas and sablay (to explain, it's like the ones wore by the contestants of Miss U when they win the top 3, the one that's hang in their shoulders, but for students it's a piece of cloth with their programs sued on it) during their photoshoot but they wear white togas during the graduation proper. For colleges, we of course wear the black ones with different layout colors just like how you wear it overseas. Also, im not sure if they were wearing gloves. However, yes, It's also a thing here to wear it on graduation. it's usually wore by Kindergartens and Elementary (bcs they're cuties and it suits them lol jk), but not really nowadays for elem ig. For highschool students it's not a common thing, but maybe ig if their are special performances like this then they allow student to wear it but just for the performance alone. I really thought this is a worldwide thing at first too. Ig we're just built different here in PH 😂❤
In my graduation way back in highschool. Our respected teacher (was a principal) he was very strict in tones. We have alto, soprano and falseto, like its like a choir, but its just our graduation song. And events in school, every section of every grade need to give performances, it maybe, singing, dancing or a theater like performance. I was present in that three performances. Not good but because of it I can like say just soso. Experience that cant be bought. Talents that can grow because of this simple performances because in my section we promote not perfect but the best.
Its always a part of every graduation in all levels in the philippines for students to pay tribute to their parents and teachers in the form of singing.
We have practices before the events. You could expect an event almost every month in our schools and for sure music is always involved. Even Nutrition Week had us singing songs with lyrics we made to a tune of a song we would all agree with. Christmas has choir competitions per grade/year level, starting with sectionals then whoever won would be the year/class rep.
Graduation is one of the most awaited by everyone, but actually despite the music we sing at graduation, it hurts because it's time to get away from your old classmates And yes, this is normal here in the Philippines, no matter what the occasion, even teachers' day hahaha we did a concert in the classroom😅
Im from the Philippines living in America now, we always sing in our graduation, I remember my graduation song before was Wind beneath my Wings by Bette Midler. Oops you can tell Im not young anymore 😂😂😂
THAT PICTURE IS THIER PARENTS. MAPA IS MAMA & PAPA (MOTHER & FATHER). HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES WE SING IN GRADUATION . BUT THAT ONE WITH MAPA SONG IS LIKE A GRADUATION SONG AND AT THE SAME TIME HONORING AH PARENTS. ❤
You should also check out university bleacher cheering in the Philippines. Saint Louiss University students make really good performances especially their school of medicine and also their engineering and architecture
