I just moved from South Texas a few years ago after living there for 20 years. It’s a fabulous city with everything you want for a decent sized city- plus a beach. Plenty of jobs. We are a Tejano family, so we loved the mixed cultures :) I have no idea why you slammed Corpus as much as you did in this video. Every city this size has “a bad side of town.” Peoria Illinois is smaller and WAY more dangerous. Always had fun in Corpus!
I retired to this beautiful city. I've a beach house up on stilts fairly new. I adore this section of Corpus Christi. I've never regretted moving here.
Great memories of Corpus Christi that’s where I started my 30 year airline career as a ramp agent with SWA I was there when the USS Lexington sailed in that day for its final home I was there when Selena was shot and killed I learned to fly there got my private pilot license in 1994 oh yeah and that’s where I met an 18 year old girl named Lynda Sue when I was 24 years old she is now 62 I’ll be 68 in March and we’re still together.
I took my kids (who weren’t even in school yet) to see the Lexington sail into Ingleside Home port. They are now in their 30’s. I’m still surprised that Corpus actually made it work. We don’t want to remember what happen to the Columbus ships 🤦🏼♀️. Lived there all my life until 3 years ago and moved up to San Antonio. Once you leave you realize how bad it really was
Aside for business and job wise sounds like u had a great career at Corpus Christi. But what it has to offer to everyone living here there’s not much that can be said.
Corpus has always struggled. But so have all the communities along the Gulf here in Texas, like Galveston as well as other smaller places along the coast. It's the hurricanes that keep them from reaching their full potential. I grew up near Galveston and left as soon as I finished college. Got tired of the hurricanes and tropical storms. Moved further inland in Texas. I go to Corpus a lot. It really does have a lot of potential. And it's not actually on the Gulf of Mexico like Galveston. It's actually on Corpus Christi Bay. The real ocean and beach along the Gulf of Mexico is about 10 miles further out to the east on the barrier islands of Padre Island and Mustang Island. Those beaches are much, much nicer. And yeah, just about everyone in Texas loves Buc-ee's!
@@amberdonnelly3410not too often. Last hurricane we had was Harvey in 2017. Hurricanes are not a major struggle. They’re barely even a struggle. We don’t get hurricanes in the gulf because the water is too warm and it pushes the hurricanes away or something? Idk. Science. We do have quite a few tropical storms during the hurricane season, but we don’t have actual hurricanes
@@SunnyHoneyBearwhat do you mean the gulf doesn't get hurricanes? It gets hurricanes every year. We've just been lucky that Corpus hasn't been hit. Ask Rockport and Port Aransas if we get hurricanes.
Farrah Fawcett was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. She was born on February 2, 1947. Corpus Christi is a coastal city in South Texas known for its beaches and maritime activities.@@bottlethrower1544
Nice video! You should have taken the ferry from Port A to SH361/Ingleside, and drive along SH35 north. Several interesting places (some not famous though) to show. As you mentioned, all the barrier islands receive the brunt of hurricanes. Port A was decimated during Harvey in 2017, but people have rebuilt it. Although they keep complaining about the insurance premiums going up every year! (people forget, but actuaries don’t 😊)
I love watching your content. It is like watching This Old House or re-runs of Seinfeld. It is calming like an old coffee cup. Keep it coming. I love your sense of humor.
As was most of the US.. In the 1950s there were basically no ghettos. Even the low income areas were safe. The whole country is going severely downhill.
Lived there for the majority of my life. Left 3 years ago and went to San Antonio. It has really changed over the years. There is a local saying when something ghetto happens, “your Corpus is showing”. Corpus has a rough image. But there are some pockets of it that are still great. I really don’t miss the hurricanes.
@@robynrob9471 doing illegal things, or not having pride in the city. It is just a saying. I think even at one time someone was selling T-shirts with that saying on it.
0:26 There's a replica of the first Whataburger at 4126 S Staples St. there in Corpus Christi. The first Whataburger was located at 2609 Ayers St. Edit: So later in the video you talk about this but that building didn't exist back when Whataburger opened their first location. The original shack is long gone but there's a replica at the address I previously mentioned.
My brother and his family once had his retirement home there, but LEFT after three years because it turned into a industrial dump and full of crime there, hostile, boring, and filthy. Theyve destroyed a once beautiful city.
In Galwaston there are absolutely lovely areas tacked in between highways and lagunas. If you love semi industrial areas. Don't know why but I love the coast area there in rural areas.
@MeowMeowUprising you need to be at least a third generation Gulf Coast to safely swim in waters between coast and barrier islands. With all these flesh eating bacteria and brain virus - I would not go swimming there in a first place.
I was born in corpus Christi. Now it's gone downhill. I moved to a different state 15 years ago. I was curious to see how the city was doing and I stumbled across this video. After watching the video I wasn't really surprised because the government never really cared much about its people. Overpopulation is on the rise, homelessness is becoming more of a problem along with garbage.
Corpus has beautiful beaches just like SPI, you were just at the bay beaches. That’s like going to Tampa and going to the beach in the bay instead of the actual beaches on the Gulf like Clear Water Beach…. The Northern tip of Padre Island and half of Mustang Island is apart of Corpus Christi city limits.
Texas isn't average, it's conservative. We don't need a lot of fancy, attractions, our attraction is peace and quiet outside of the big cities. Houston and Dallas are the hotspots for drama everywhere else is for the quiet folk.
Never been, I suspect a big part of the problem is that the Federal Gov is no longer subsidizing flood insurance in coastal areas. My brother own a house on Cape Cod-despite the fact that the house is half a mile from the ocean (and about 20' above sea level), his insurance carrier cancelled his policy.
We had a wonderful family beach weekend on North Padre Island BEFORE the last big Hurricane. Maybe about 15 years ago? We stayed at a beachfront Holiday Inn Spree or something like that it was named. It wasn't luxury but it wasn't crowded, we found sand dollars, there was a sandy beach or you could swim in the pool where there was also a live band. We ate at a good seafood restaurant nearby. Then the Hurricane came and trashed the hotel. I've been watching to see if it's been restored but it's been slow.
While Texas overall isn't the most beautiful state in the country ( I even admit that ) but it's also not the worst either. Remember Texas is the 2nd largest state by landmass and population in the U.S. We do have great places to visit that are beautiful. Texas is one of the most popular destination for people who want to relocate. I don’t like the looks of refineries but it provides jobs and gas that you need to travel around so you can make your videos. Every state has its pros and cons for sure .
Enjoyed my pilot training there in the early 90s. Near the beach, great food, good weather. Quiet, but look forward to getting back to visit someday soon.
I lived in Texas a few years but never made it to Corpus Christi! Seeing those refineries reminds Me if Midland/Odessa, smelly, but the smelliest place I ever went was Anniston Alabama!
👋👋 Hello Nick, it's good to get a posting, This footage 🎥🎬🎞️ Reminds me of the movie that Cher played , _" come back home Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean" we are obviously now In Good Ol Mexico, where anything goes, ♦️♦️♦️‼️
Actually, the biggest Buc-ee’s is now in Luling, TX. 77,000 square feet. Buc-ee’s however is having an 80,000 square foot location being built slightly north of Ocala, FL.
Bro ..I try to watch your videos...but you always come off sounding pompous and entitled...like these places you visit have no worth and are beneath you...but..keep saying Texas sucks so people from California stay away.
yeah South Padre Island beaches aren’t bad for the gulf rim it’s the nicest part east of Destin or maybe Gulf Shores and of course the stretch between Biloxi and Galveston is nasty and Port Aransas which is the barrier island near Corpus and points south it starts getting nicer, it’s not Florida but it’s aight
x Corpus Christi was my #3 option of places to move to when I graduated from grad school at Mizzou, behind Charleston, South Carolina (#1) and New Orleans (#2). x 1:20 Great shot of that port! x 2:42 That is interesting how those flowers are painted on that building. x 3:40 Great footage of the USS Lexington x 4:06 Very interesting facts! I have heard that My Heritage has more European records than Ancestry (I have both Ancestry and 23andMe). x 5:27 Very interesting! x 14:55 That house would be perfect for people that want a haunted-looking house! x 19:57 I will remember to try the fudge the next time I am in a Buc-ee's! x 27:37 That is a really cool and pretty setup for a performance! x 28:24 I like those lights on those trees, it really enlivens the downtown. x 29:22 That place is very colorful and looks fun! x The model and actress Farrah Fawcett is from Corpus Christi and snagged her break as a model at the University of Texas. o Our family dog was named Farrah after her and our public school system (Burwell Public Schools) is the Longhorns (likely after the University of Texas as it was established in 1883 and that is the same year Burwell was platted).
@@btetschner No cup of sugar, but we walked the same route to school and exchanged pleasant hello's. She dated 'him' first, she was older than me, and I dated him a few years later. He was the one that got away, my fault entirely. But yeah, Farrah was always beautiful and as I said, kind and friendly.
Texans talk trash about our city all year but when they wanna hit a beach or escape the cold north Texas weather, guess where they come? I'd rather live here than Dallas, Houston or Laredo 😂
Corpus will never live to its potential. City officials are too corrupt and don’t put money where it matters (contrary to what they’d want you to believe), the people here to far too careless and trashy, and the industry, while vital for the economy, ruins the natural beauty of the area. Algae and bacterial blooms abound, dirty beaches, and lackluster accommodations make up the majority of the beach experience at Corpus Christi, and it’s a mediocre town with mediocre ambitions.
Yours is THE most accurate statement on Corpus. Too much industry crammed in here will eventually kill what is naturally beautiful about it, Ingleside and Aransas Pass.
Great video, Nick! I never knew much about Corpus Christi until now. It seems like Corpus Christi proper is fine as well as the outlier beaches-it’s the middle section of CC that could use some help…..
@@NickJohnson I live in Corpus Christi, born and raised. Video was a fair assessment of the city, however, you missed all the new construction of the last 50 years on the south side of town; and Padre Island National Seahorse. Beautiful beaches.
I’m staying in west Texas down by Big Bend for the winter. About a week after you were on the coast we got a week of the gloomiest, grayish weather. Hopefully you didn’t experience that. Aside from that, the weather in western Texas is beautiful in the winter. We have gotten days of beautiful sunny and warm weather in mid January! The summers are supposed to be awful though. That’s why l am heading north in April.
Nick its funny you described it as either cloudy or muggy lol texas is so dry n beautifully sunny compared to elsewhere but you are about to experience some Pure Michigan soon I hear.. it was 2 feet of snow now its kind of a melty mess but you don't know real humidity until you visit here in the summer 😂
Yikes this is Google Images: San Pedro California 😅 Port of Long Beach. The Port of Long Beach although quite modern and nice is not San Pedro on the Southside of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. I grew up in LA. Lived on the Peninsula till I was 30.
CC is not getting liberal… most of us are refinery or oilfield. All my neighbors are conservative except 2 households, one is a drug addict & the other is occupied by a family of bums. The guys are my age & one does entry level work & the other one hasn’t worked in 7-8 years
After hearing that you think Galveston is better/nicer than Corpus Christi, you’ve outed yourself as someone not qualified to be taken seriously with your ranking of cities.
13:38 correct Nick but more specifically, it’s Mississippi River water. The current in the gulf flows counterclockwise so you’ll notice Galveston is the brownest waters. Corpus (summer) and padre most of the year are more blue. It’s not dirty, just silt carried from as far as Canada
That makes sense why the waters in the Florida Panhandle are some of the most dazzling turquoise and clear in the country. I always wondered why those beaches were so nice, but other Gulf beaches generally suck..
All the Mississipi water with its pesticides, that combines with the Gulf chemicals produce a gigantic dead zone in the ocean. Not mentioned in the video, some families on the coastal bend used to make a living shrimping and catching oysters a few decades ago. Not anymore...
Was gonna say, I go to mustang Island every summer and the water is pretty blue. I grew up near south Padre and the beach accesses have pretty blue/clear water 20 miles out, but most of the year, the bay looks solid green
Nick, the fact that it is the Gulf Coast currents is correct. You should have been there after Katrina....Plus you didn't let the viewers know where you were in Corpus. Padre Island with their canal houses. Flour Bluff (interesting name) for folks who cannot afford the Island. Also home to HEB along with Whataburger...
Yes! Farrah went to same Ray High School Mom did. We have a real photo of of her w/Lee Majors. The Jonas Brothers & Post Malone lived near me (Dallas at the time) Tons of celebrities are from Texas! Jamie Foxx is.
Jamie Foxx & Many other famous people are from Tx. I was shocked to see how many. I moved to Calif & they said "Texas girls are different. (Better!) Tougher, not whining nor wanting gifts & so many are superficial
I love this city. I've lived thier once and in Aransas pass twice. I'm from Oregon and as a teenager I lived near port Aranass for a couple of years and it was truly the time of my life it must of been 1993-1995. I returned back to corpus to be homeless in 2017 I was in a bad headspace found myself going thru midlife mental breakdown. And for me it I lived in the fountain across from whataburger by the bay. I was able to get by with just my personality never had any trouble went fishing got a job. Meet a few good friends but most of all I found myself regained my confidence and found out why it's the body of christ. I've since moved back to Oregon have a great job now making 6 figures a years and it was all due to building my confidence back knowing I was strong enough to beat the streets of corpus. I can beat anything I will always have a special place in my soul for this beautiful city where you can learn that no matter who you are everybody in corpus has been down and out most know where the mission is and have stayed there
I am currently staying in the south side of Corpus, not as bad as how you portrayed the city. Yes, CC has homeless as a result plenty of garbage dumped everywhere. Some water fronts are gross and stinky but there are also some decent ones. I love the people here, very relaxed and friendly. Just like any cities with homeless problems, one must exercise caution and common sense but that doesn't mean the city is bad.
I live east of Dallas and about 12 miles from a Buc-ees. The traffic getting to it, getting in and out of it, and finding parking is unreal and not for the faint of heart. Same thing for the one in Madisonville outside Houston. Sheesh. But we love Buc-ees and beaver nuggets.
I was born and raised in Corpus. Back in the ‘50s, 60s, and early ‘70s, it was a pretty good place to live. Time and circumstances have taken a sad toll. I left in 2006 and haven’t been back.
I have been in corpus for the past 20 years. It has gotten much better. Housing prices keep going up as well with new people moving in. That shows something.
@@cryptowolf-zf3fsI've been in Corpus for the last 20 years and it's steadily gone down hill, especially compared to San Antonio and Austin. Few cultural activities and terrible restaurants. Gangs, petty crime, low levels of education, terrible streets full of pot holes, polluted beaches. It will never get better because it's a dumping ground for polluting industries.
I live on a ranch that is 40 minutes west of corpus. That place is a lifeline to a lot of the rural areas around here. Not the prettiest , but important to us.
Corpus Christi is that one Texas city nobody talks about. Seems more quiet and tamed compared to the larger cities like Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio
San Antonio looks like the only thing holding that war zone together is the paint from all the gang graffiti if not the rest is iron bars on every window and house front door
I have drove through Corpus Christi many times, I know 2 people who moved there after retirement. But congrats on painting the area like a oil slick industrial dump😂😂😅I think this video created a harsh perception of the area. I never got that impression from driving through there or talking to people who lived there. I would live there. But if my only reference was this video,😅 I wouldn't go near it😂😂
I grew up in CC (although I left in 2005) and his video was complete garbage for what CC is/was. Its like, he drove down from SA on the interstate right into the downtown exit and north beach and was like, I guess this is CC. Should have gone down in March. Would have had a completely different experience.
Corpus is where you wanna go if you want to live a quieter life with little in the way of big city life and/or entertainment. If you're coming here from Seattle, you may be disappointed. If you like more peace and/or quiet, it's pretty damn good. If you work in a refinery or an industrial capacity, it's a very reasonable place to live. Just outside of Corpus you can buy your own ranch. Don't care much for downtown, waste of money imho. Taxes are ridiculous too.
