I wish we could sit down and talk. I'm near to 70 years and have had near to 40 gardening seasons. I learned something new every one of them, mostly from failures. Compost 6 mos to 18 months EVERYTHING you put into the soil. Even rabbit manure (6 mos). Your tiller is your best friend. Set aside 25% of your available ground every year for fallow composting and green ' manure' cover crops Treat the soil like the living thing it is. Learn from mistakes and honor your instincts. Thank GOD every day that HE trusts you with helping HIM provide your food. More later. Blessings.

i guess i'm lucky, i have made my own compost from leaves just because they are so abundant. if you look around, you may find places people dump them and you can get all the finished compost you want for free. the apt lawn care company behind my house dumps their waste leaves at the edge of the woods, but even closer, a few neighbors dump leaves at the end of my street. its there for the taking. i never thought about how herbicides are contaminating everything these days. thanks for the headup on how manure contains weed killer, and most likely antibiotics! it makes perfect sense. btw, my vegs grow fantastic with this home made compost. my neighbor even accused me of using ''miracle grow''.

Viewer from the UK here … I’m so sorry this happened to your crops. We have had the same issue here, with bags of compost containing horse manure, where the horses’ hay has been treated with herbicide. Apparently, this stays in the manure after going through the animal’s system … it’s called Aminopyralid. It happened in several different brands of bagged compost. Some companies refunded people for the affected compost, but many didn’t. When I buy bagged compost now, I sow a couple of bean seeds as a ‘tester’ to see if aminopyralid is present, and then I go ahead with all my seeds if there’s no problem. I really hope your next crops flourish after all your hard work 😊👍

Bought Sta Green product at Lowe's for potting up plants in the greenhouse. They developed a brown powdery mold on the soil surface. Over 100 potted plants. Dumped product in trash bag and tried to salvage what plants I could by using different soil. Took the Sta Green bag of soil back to Lowes for refund and told a lady with a cart full of it to steer clear of that crap. She said she had so many bags because they were on sale for 2 dollars. I said, 'That's why they are on sale". She left her cart right where it was and said she would start all over. I was thinking of going to get some Black Kow this week which is going to be warm and I will be ready to put my own seedlings in my raised becs, but am rethinking it. Perhaps I will puchase Black Kow at summer's end and let them sit over fall and winter and use next year, giving them time to fully compost for safety.

The feather meal alone can create too much nitrogen which in turn comes in contact with organic materials like cow plops and bedding from cows. She put too much into a small area. Anyway, it's life and not a big conspiracy.

But, she as she explained…they used the old bags of manure from last year which had time to compost more. Plus she always mixed the amendments the same way for each hole. I’ve been watching her dig holes, mix the amendments, and plant her crops the same way for years. And she always has an abundant beautiful harvest. So she knows what she’s doing and how to produce healthy plants. The problem is the manure like she has explained. I bought the same stuff this past weekend and noticed that it looked, felt, and smelled different than in years past. I did plant a few plants to check it out but not all of my starts in case I have to replant. I will definitely be upset if my plants die because of time wasted as well as having to replace all the soil in my containers. Several years ago I made the mistake of planting my in ground garden and then mulching it with straw from a local farmer. I wasn’t aware of grazon then. My plants grew beautifully until they started turning weird and the leaves looked deformed. It poisoned my soil and now I only container garden in case something like that happens again. Some people are just greedy and dishonest. That farmer knew I was planning to use his straw for my garden. But he took my money and kept quiet.

It's not just replacing the plants, but now your garden in not ready to receive new plants either. This has been happening with products bought from commercial producers. Contaminants like salts, insecticides etc, get in the soil or compost and devastate the garden. One advice I heard is to test any compost or soil you buy by planting beans in it. Beans germinate and grow fast, so you can find out relatively quickly if your soil is ok.

Good Morning, Mr. and Mrs. H. I wish I watched this video when it first came out. I would have told you to run to Tractor Supply Store and purchase Sweet PDZ which removed odors and ammonia from urine in horse stalls among other things. 25lb bag for about $13.99. You can find a spot to dump your existing bags of Black Kow and mix this into it and it will quickly remove the ammonia. You will also need to scoop out all of those holes and mix the compost with that PDZ. I used it in my garden to rid it of heavy metals and excessive ammonia from run-off from the lawns uphill from my house that leeched their toxic sprays from lawn companies spraying their lawns to green them up. And of course they are an excellent meat and for source. Please adopt rabbits along with your chickens as the best manure replacement!

I'm so sorry for ya'll. I'm in Oklahoma. I'm certain that the compost I bought this year was contaminated with an herbicide. I had about 28 tomato plants that I had put out and immediately the next morning realized something was not right. I hastily pulled up and soaked the roots and replanted without the compost on the ones I could save. Many were too far gone and even some of the ones I replanted didn't make it. I grew all of my plants from seeds, like ya'll, back in February. I had already given away all the ones I hadn't used and then had to go buy new plants from inventories around town that were already picked through. It was so disappointing. It was the mushroom compost that caused the problem for me. After some research, there is animal compost included in the bags. I'm guessing an herbicide was used on the grasses/hays that passed through into the compost. I'd love to hear if anyone else had the same problem. It's heartbreaking. I think these contaminations should be tested for before being sold to consumers. Not only the impact of the contamination on the physical plant, but the fact that we're EATING what plants produce. These companies make too much money to not have a safeguard in place. The government wants to tell us what kind of cars to drive, what kind of stoves we can use, all while they sit by and allow for rampant use of pesticides to poison our soil and water sources that go into the food we eat. It's pathetic.

So very sorry ...but happy that the rest of your garden is doing well! I have heard of this happening when farmers got manure and the cows had grazed on chemically treated grass...and it caused a lot of problems on the new plants. Today I came across a you tube video on making your own fertilizer. I am going to try it on a few plants. One quart jar of warm water, 1 Tablespoon dry active yeast, 2 T. sugar or 6 T blackstrap molasses. Mix and let sit overnight....leave room for foaming. Fill 5 gallon bucket with water and let it sit overnight to come to room temp. In the morning pour the yeast mixture into bucket and mix. Water every 2 weeks with 1 cup. If desired, also mix in 1T. powdered egg shell and 1/2 teaspoon epsom salt.

I contacted a known popular brand ( black kow ) and ask about this. I was told they could not guarantee anything. And that they do random testing by placing a seed in the manure compost to see if it will grow and die shortly after germination. And that the manure comes from a dairy farm , but they had no way of knowing is the pasture or hay had been sprayed due to the herbicide has no effect on milk or its production. Do not use cow, horse, goat manure in your garden if the animals have been fed hay or grazed a pasture treated with "GRAZON Herbicide". It is used to kill weeds on pastures and hay fields. It is extremely residential in the manure-of the animal and will poison your garden , your plants will either die or grow very malformed and not produce. Do not buy cheap bags of manure compost either..This manure is NO GOOD for compost. If your not sure about the hay your feeding ask the guy that grew the hay . You'd better be safe than sorry.

Several homesteaders I watch on RU-vid have had issues with compost/soil they purchased-mostly poisoning from cows fed grass that was sprayed with grayzon or aminapyrilids (sp?) I think that is what happened at Roots and Refuge but the leaves on their plants twisted and curled real bad- they contacted the company. I hope someone in your vicinity has been blessed with abundance with their starts and they would share with you so it’s not a year lost! I know you had big dreams for those tomatillo! I want to see you can some green salsa! Best wishes! 🤗

We’ve had 30” of rain in the past two months and it has ruined my 1/2 acre garden and what did survive I lost in the 90mph wind that blew through. My potatoes were looking so good but the wet soil did them in. I have been digging what potatoes did make and have been replanting as I go. Yesterday we had 3.62” of rain and the day before was 2.5”.

We recently had a problem with Black Kow also. Have used it for years with wonderful results. However the last 10 bags I purchased was nothing but stick, bark, big rocks. Totally unusable! Contacted Black Kow and talked to representative. Said to take pictures front, back, receipt and what inside contents looked like. They said they would do a refund. So far still waiting - 3 months. Be careful. I think that with all of the increase in gardening and this wonderful product, they are now scratching the bottom of the barrel of what they have.

I'm an old gardener and have used Black Kow but only in one way and that was when I planted trees (palm, coconut, mango, etc. I have never used it on vegetables. You were lucky in the past that you didn't burn your other plants. New plants have tender roots so be very careful with any fertilizer. I did burn a blueberry plant with too much fertilizer. I lost one plant but I also had to change out the soil so I could replant there. I am sorry, but we all learn. Check your pH always before you plant. Enclose your garden to keep out critters, etc. Good luck and hang in there! 💕🫶

My heart goes out to you two. This very thing happened last year to the Soward's on their homestead. They had their soil tested and found contaminated manure/compost. They planted sunflower seeds to suck up all the bad nutrients, then after they grew they had to destroy them and then removed what they could of the soil. May God send you a miracle for this year.
@arrowlaylowpepper
@arrowlaylowpepper 2 месяца назад
The Soward's issue was herbicide in the purchased soil, not manure that hadn't been properly composted. Sunflowers can't fix or even live in hot/fresh manure full of ammonia. Loss resulted, but from different contaminates. I don't trust store bought.

I would STOP using this product . The company needs to ne notified. Does the killer compost bags have lot numbers. If so there should be a way to recall the bags or inform consumers to use next year sometimes after proper aging and chemistry and natural breakdowns have occurred. You should request compensation for the loss of both plants and potential harvst. Compost that is not properly aged destroys plants. That compost should NOT be sitting on shelves for growing!!! This is awful. These bag of soil should have been tested for quality control of their contents. BUYERs BEWARE😢😢😢
