If you're wondering what I do on an "average" vocal track, it would be some combination of what I talked about in this video, with these steps being essential:
Ableton Saturator
Ableton Compressor
Waves Renaissance De-Esser (usually de-esser after all compressors, I made this track really fast so that was a slightly less optimal order)
FabFilter Pro Q 2
And these steps being optional:
Doubled vocal
Ableton Chorus
Dada Life Sausage Fattener
Waves Maserati VX1
UAD Lexicon 224
Depending on the "flavor" of compressor or reverb I want I am also most fond of:
UAD Teletronix LA-2A
UAD 1176 LN
UAD Ocean Way Studios
Waves Renaissance Reverb
Here's the video for the original song: • Making a song as fast ...

Surprised he didn’t start with a light compression to tighten levels and EQ so you’re not throwing the whole chain unnecessary bad frequencies.

About a year ago I had to have a mastectomy and it was a pretty slow recovery leaving me with less hearing than I had before... Now I have little to no bass in my right ear and little to no treble in my left ear. I want to make music for a living so as you could imagine I was terrified. I remember listening to one of my favorite songs and when the bass was supposed to come in... nothing happened. I literally broke down into tears... I decided to keep making music anyhow. My wife says my mixes are better, I've gotten better feedback from my clients, I keep getting opportunities and I'm feeling extremely hopeful!!! I can't believe it. I just wanted to ease your mind and let you know that even if you lose some hearing it doesn't mean anything. Keep making music my man! I'll watch your channel even if you go deaf! Love you bro.

I really appreciate hearing what goes into your music, being more of a guitar person and knowing of everything that goes into making a good instrumental tone I've never really thought about the effort that goes into making vocals sound good. Please keep these kinds of videos coming!
@thanoskandris3917
@thanoskandris3917 7 лет назад
to be honest i didn't understand abouuuuut 80% of this BUT it was still really interesting to see how much detail goes into just one aspect of a song. i never would have really thought about it otherwise, which i'm sort of embarrassed to admit haha.
@Khosumi

Most people don't realize producing electronic music is in fact an art of its own and how difficult it is, there's no instant "make it good" button that works in 10 minutes.

Merkk Official Dude no I know how much work it is and have the utmost respect and admiration. I just have an untrained ear so I don't know how much work I'm hearing until it's broken down like this. :)

This was fascinating. I find music fascinating in general, but it's the production I've been interested in lately, and it's an area that musicians simply are not asked about. I'm not sure why...but in interviews it's always such superficial questions and I'm over here like "OMG ask about the recording and the mixing and the ratio of what their producers contributed!" But it never happens... I'm such a music junkie. I spend an absurd amount of my take home pay on music. And you're channel is everything I didn't know I wanted. You've got a new subscriber :)
@Carina5707
@Carina5707 7 лет назад
I guess it's because the interviewers themselves aren't into it. They ask what they're interested in, or what they think the general fan demographic would like. But I think there's definitely a niche for an interview channel that talks to mainstream musicians (or any stream really, with the internet it doesn't really matter, everyone is looking for everyone) about the production process of their music. I think musicians would find it refreshing, and I think it would really expand how people listen to music. It might change their views on certain genres, help build respect towards artists they didn't think of much before. Maybe you could do it, Andrew? Make a side channel or something, interview the artists you know/have contacts for. I would find that so interesting. You know, the whole "if you want something done do it yourself" thing. You're certainly qualified. Something to think about.

Some interviews do, although its rare. I think its mostly do to the fact that most artists dont actually work on the mixing or producing. If you watch an interview such as Tame Impala where this one guy writes his music, mixes, produces, and masters it you will see questions like this asked all the time. People are amazed how he does it.
@kaustik185
@kaustik185 7 лет назад
true dat. hope it'll shift a bit towards in-depth technical interviews with people who aren't doing "heady" stuff, since there are more and more people who are really interested in what's going on on top 40 studio's hard drives. german mag "groove" has some nice studio reports on various electric genres' artists, and guitar/drum/bass mags usually have a section with some in-depth tech/studio/stage review, f.e. MUSE, The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree could be interesting. also, check out Mass Appeal's "rhythm roulette" series here on youtube... it's strictly hip hop beats, but the concept is so much fun: producer gets blindfolded, has to pick 3 records from store and then make a beat by sampling them. they don't go in-depth about tech stuff but it''s just like sitting in their studio in awe and watching. and with a bit of know how and reading through the comments section, you can find out what you wanna know.

This video was so well organized. I just started working with actually producing the music I write and would love to see your do a video similar to this but instead of just vocals maybe a mixing and mastering play by play. I love writing music but for me production is such a scary difficult process of playing and listening over and over and over. It would help so much to see/hear the common staple effects and processes used to make a track sound full and finished

I refused to get tubes as a kid ... the lack of drainage gave me a lots of ear infections and caused significant hearing loss and distortion in my left ear and some in my right. So if you get tubes or don't (when the doctors tell you, you need them) you're screwed. You make the best with what you got and you got it good Andrew.

I have high end hearing loss from gunfire and I set my room eq to counteract it by dialing up the frequencies on the eq to half the level of the loss at an audiologist's instructions. I just have to shut it off when I render.
@hannahk9772
@hannahk9772 7 лет назад
I consider myself hard of hearing, and like you, I had a few sets of tubes as a kid to remove fluid from my inner ear (I don't think ear infections were the main driver, because I don't remember any). For me at least, I attribute some of my hearing loss/limiting to the fact that my ear drums now have a good amount of scar tissue/calcification. I'm definitely not an audiologist but I'd wager that the scar tissue plays a role. theres also the periodic tinnitus and comes in briefly one ear at a time ... does it dampen the sound for you as it does for me? (like the hearing sort of ducks out but doesn't go mute?) the shoddy hearing is just a thing that I accept at this point because any further surgery seems too risky in comparison to the benefits (also no doc has broached it). good luck and know that there are some other HoH folks out there with similar experiences!
