This is a festival that takes place in one of the districts of Kerala, ie, Thrissur. Basically its a festival related to a Hindu temple but it is actually beyond that. Because the people of Kerala despite their religion gather at the place to enjoy the festival. The portion u were enjoying is called chendamelam. The instrument is called ' chenda'.

Regarding the instrument you were wondering about, it's called 'Chenda', and people from Kerala speak the language 'malayalam' and hence called 'malayalis' or 'keralites'(more formal).

This is an Encient Hindu festival dedicated to Hindu god Shiva. Kerela's encient Hindu temples and their rituals are amazing. And these Rituals Songs ,Hyms, Drums and Precussion dates back to more than 2000 years. In fact all encient South Indian Temples are unique and their festivals are worth watching. In ancient times South Indian Hindu Kings had ruled Indonesia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Combodia and Thailand thats whys there you find Similarities between South Indian (Indian) and South East Asian music instruments like Precussion,flute and Music. Indonesia is a Muslim Country but still Indonesia has preserved its past. as Hindu Epics like Ramayana and Mahabharta as their National Heritage especially in Indonesian Island of Bali. Combodian encient Ankurwat temple was a Hindu temple later turn into Buddhist temple. So India ,Indian culture & music had lot of influence over south east asia.

In Kerala every Temple conduct these types of function annually... We call it "Ulsavam"... Its like an anniversary kind of thing.... The day the Deity is established or the temple open is celebrated annually.... Chendamelam, Elephants are common... These festivals last for 3--10 days according to the power of temple... And Trissur pooram is the biggest among these... And nothing can compare to it... 💓 And comparing with other states Kerala is the state celebrates more festivals every year.... 🙂❣️
@ronjos
@ronjos Год назад
Its not hours, the festival goes on for about 3 days. And yes the Trissoor Pooram festival is a competition between 2 temples. That row of elephants faces another row of elephants on the opposite side. People are in the middle. The winner is judged by the reaction of the crowd to the synchronised display of umbrellas and other decorative displays on the elephants. This festival is centuries old.

The Epicness of this festival cannot be described in words... mildly put, it's out of this world! The beating of drums and other instruments is called Panchvadayam, which means, five instruments literally. This is highly technical performance, just like a Raaga, performed by highly trained and disciplined musicians.
