I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. Unless it really intrigues me, which is RARE as I’ve basically tried every soft plastic design. I will never buy a pack of soft plastics where each plastic in the pack is valued at a dollar or more for each. These prices are BS. Look at Zoom, they put wings on a super fluke and charge a crazy price per plastic ratio on it.

Being someone that sells to Tacklewarehouse, the mark-ups are NOT that big. Margins are thin on both sides of the game. It is about pushing volume.

My sense is you are correct that the bait portion of industry is overloaded and retailers are starting to dump inventory that has been sitting. The cycle of growth that hit the industry during COVID peaked six/eight months ago with huge number of new entrants and broadening of existing product types. This is the backside of that cycle for better or worse.

I think it's a sign of the times. The booming economy has slowed down. People aren't fishing as much or spending as much money on hobbies when they're struggling to put food on the table. We aren't seeing the shortages of baits like we were during covid when everyone and their brother was out on the water. Unless something changes, i think it's going to continue.

🍺The majority of USA anglers are done fishing bass until next spring. Large Manufacturers like Strike king make a fortune making baits for .30 cents and distribute them for $3 to companies that then mark them up 40%-100%. If management guesses wrong and orders too much of the “next best thing” this is the time of year to put it on sale. I traditionally stock up on Black Friday sales and have enough tackle to last 2 lifetimes so I only need to purchase new items/tackle that comes out each year if it catches my eye and I think it’s actually an improvement. Core Tackle may not make profit selling at 40% off but the larger companies like TW likely can due to their buying power/quantities from the Manufacturers. 🤠

I haven't watched a bass tournament more than 5 minutes before they show me someone's back and I see its not Hackney , Swindle , Cox , Evers or of course yourself and I turn the channel so I'm not sure what the sponsors are selling . I think it is partly due to the division in the industry . You know when I'm referred to as the old guy I tend to go somewhere else . Not an opion but a fact . Been in the service business my whole life and it is hard to win a loyal customer back once you loose them . There is not enough ffs guys out there to carry the industry . Tight lines Matt .

Ehhhh I don't know. It just seems to be a lot of the basic stuff that goes on sale frequently at different retailers. As you said they're probably just trying to load off stock before the end of the year. I don't think it's anything to worry about. I tried finding some things I've been looking at getting for a while but of course everything I actually need isn't included in the sale.

COVID and FFS hit about the same time and spiked bass fishing with fringe anglers, a lot of those have left and according to Ken Duke license sales are much lower. It may just be coming back to the mean.

Baits are way over priced. And with most people now buying just FFS and Live Scope minnows that’s the biggest issue. Nobody is buying the normal baits now. So they have no choice but to move the old inventory as fast as they can to make room for the new ones coming. Matt you know this. Everyone knows this but to afraid to say it. Man up.

Many areas of retail double their purchase price to obtain a retail price. So if they're allowing a 40% discount, they're still making 10%. Plus probably gaining some new customers, and reducing overstocked inventory.

I think you’re right Matt, and as a fellow tackle addict I have noticed how fast all prices have risen just in the past 18 months and TW always has their Black Friday sale after thanksgiving,but combine all of the inventory with price increases you almost have to buy during some type of sale. I’m also retired so prices of everything have increased significantly compared with my income, so as an average consumer I have taken my foot off the buying throttle 😮😢😂🎣

The fishing industry as a whole is very over priced. (100k for a bass boat, 5/6 hundred for a reel and the same for a rod, 15 to 30 bucks and more for a bait)😂. It can’t continue like this. Our economy is dead and our country is broke. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more companies going under and more sponsors not investing big money without the big returns. Sad but it’s tight all over. 😢

Box stores typically order product based off of the years prior sales. so, if Tackle Warehouse had a good year or years in sales there buyers will purchase more based of those prior sales. With the economy being what it is now I would say they have an excess of SKU's in stock and with the new products coming out this fall they need to off load there excess product. And of course, they need to do it before the end of the year. Even if they lose money, liquidating it may help them on taxes. If they have to much prior year product it hurts, there future buying from their suppliers. That is my thought, and I may be totally off base.

Hello Matt. This is the way to get people to spend more money at a site than they would normally. IE. You spend $400 on products that you would not. As you said, this is the off-season for fishing. So they do a hard sail to Entice Impulse buying. You will notice that in the spring, though, in summer, they will have sails on products for that time of year. Trust me, they are not losing money. If you buy 2 products at a 20% markup or 6 products at a 10% markup, they are still making a profit and moving more inventory to boot. Ok, tight lines. Regards, Steven.

Here my 2 cents as a ex bass pro employee. The mark up on lures is not just insane. But unlogical. 2022-2024 we have seen more bait companies pop up then ever before. We have seen new lures almost every month. This is a surplus problem in my opinion.

What you are saying & I agree with you btw, is music to the ears of Federal Reserve Board which had just concluded (for now) an historic rate rise of interest rates in the shortest amount of time to cut consumer buying/spending by way of increasing borrowing cost. Lay offs & bankruptcies (save for the "Too Big To Fail" companies) are considered necessary collateral damage. Btw its a way to keep labor aware that they need to learn they are expendable & please act as such. Least Also wonder if FFS weeny baits with associated tackle hurts the market for power fishing & other techniques?

Just purchased a JDM MEGABASS P5 Destroyer spinning rod thst cost a LOT of money for a JDM online store whós name dont want to mention. I examine it: MADE IN CHINA. All fishing products, and I mean ALL are made cheap in labor and quality but at an extreme markup sell price. So the fishing industry itself is almost shooting themselves in the foot woth these outrageous pricing.

Another side effect from the FFS. More traditional style tackle sales across the board are way down from what I’ve read because everyone that has FFS are using the do nothing minnow style baits and not much else. I also wonder if tackle sales are down because of a pandemic after effect. During the pandemic there were tons of new fishermen. Kayak sales went through the roof too. I see fishing kayaks that are barely used selling on Facebook marketplace constantly. Now that it’s been a while I think some of those people went back to the older pre-pandemic lifestyle and haven’t stuck around.

Just my two cents ( that’s all I have in my pocket until next payday): its an election year. The American population will decide who the next president will be, along with the econmy slowing down. Depending on who comes into office will help or break the conomy for the next for years. So yes, there is a slow down , FED Reserve trying to deflate and stimulate the economy, and people holding off on buying non-essentials.

Inventory reduction. The cost of money is way up so there is less capital to invest. My retirement dollar is worth 87 cent versus 2019. Home interest rates are in the high 7’s and consumables are up around 27 percent. The manufactures are bracing themselves for a future increase in a possible down turn that is a continuation of the last four years. The price index is easy to find and graph. You are right Matt to be wondering why there are so many flash sales.

Having been a small business owner I believe there’s 2 main reasons for TW sale. End of fishing season reducing product left being warehoused and wanting inventory low to reduce the quarterly tax businesses are required to pay come October then again in January all the while TW won’t need that inventory cause fishing season shuts down for many of us. I took advantage of TW sale buying twice the amount of jig heads while still paying the same price had I only ordered the exact quantity I wanted.

I recently heard AJ jr discuss the General Tire deal, and he seemed to have a "no big deal" attitude, that these non endemics just came and go, an some one will take their place. Sales are probably at an all time high, but there are so many SKUs and influencer marketing is moving on to a new one so quickly that they get stuck with large inventory of yesterday’s baits.

One thing I notice that it’s a lot of specific sizes and colors of baits, more like this color didn’t sell, or this 3/4 ounce bait didn’t sell etc. I was in a very large and reputable tackle shop yesterday and they were selling the SK Hybrid Hunters for half price, because as I would assume they don’t sell, and they want them gone.

I can only just speak for myself. My money aint going as far as it was in spite of getting a so called cost of living adjustment. I have had some other unplanned expenses too. I am not about to log on to the TW sale. That would be like going to the brothel just to hang out. I need to fish with what I have. I see some deals on outboards too, I would love to replace my 08 yama with a 4 stroke, maybe next year. ps I paid 2.94 for diesel the other day beats the 4.70 it was.

Regardless of a person's political perspective, no one can deny we are in a high inflation, monetary stressful time for many Americans. Credit card purchases for essentials such as groceries and gasoline exceeds $1 trillion dollars, I expect this impacts outdoorsman as well, who are required to cut back on non-essential spending. I have already seen many local Walmart stores with fishing tackle on their clearance isles as a similar result of unsold product.

Can probably thank ffs for tackle sales i’ve been buying from tackle warehouse for over 10 years they never had a sale like that tackle stores usually make 30 to 40%. I know a person that used to own a boat store and tackle store. That’s what he told me. Need to completely go back to old-school fishing. I was glad to see what the bass pro tour did partially eliminating facing sonar it’s gonna hurt all of us in the long run

I'm surprised TW hasn't done this in years prior. Anyone who's ever been involved with retail tackle sales knows that there is a TON of stuff left on the shelf at the end of the season. That's one reason the margins are a what they are; to make up for not selling 25% of what you stocked. Most big box stores, and I assume TW, sell it all in bulk to another discount outfit, for pennies on the dollar, to resale at a deep discount to the consumer. I hope it's not indicative of what's coming. But, I think we are set to pay for the past few decades of out of control spending, at least on the federal level. We better get our ducks in row.

TW has not had this kind of sale before. All tackle vendors are desperate to move merchandise because lots of anglers including myself just do not have the funds to be buying tackle. Look at all the craze sales that THT is having every other day.

There was a lot of baits they just needed to unload. I tried to get enough to get the 40% but just either didn’t use what they had or had enough already. So I looked at rods, reels, line and terminal but really nothing I use anymore.

I'm a bee keeper honey sales and bee sales are down 50% . We have been building selling ice fishing equipment for 50 years. Those shops mark up 100% and they don't pay for anything up front. Everything is fronted like the drug business. They need to pay their supplier off why the sales.. interest rates alot people mortgage tripled.. bad times for people adjustable mortgage .. they needed to bail out the banks . Tackle warehouse has amazing customer service.. I bought new plug box and the latch got bent a little. I told them I was able to bend it back just fine but maybe next time pack them different for shipping. They didn't have to refund 100% of my money and let me keep the box . Heck I ordered another one. I didn't expect a refund at all. Sounds like you need to start making your own lures . How I found the channel im doing research before I hire a patent lawyer for my invention your doing something very similar just in a different way. Same results. Just hard to sell it your way ..

Compared prices before Covid you can clearly see there is a 40% markup. I think the economy is so weak now companies are folding. Everyone is being affected. However if you have the funds stock up. Before everything goes high price again.

They won't offer a discount they can't afford. Just shows you what the margin on these things are more than anything. They pay about 20-30% of what msrp says something should cost.
