The trouble with painting timber that is exposed to foot traffic and the elements is that the water can get in but not dry out as fast so it actually speeds up the deterioration of the timber. You would be better off treating it like a timber deck which is designed for foot traffic and to be exposed to the elements. so use a decking oil that will soak into the timber and preserve it , as the decking oil soaks into the timber it is not slippery and future treatments are also easy to simply mop on another treatment every 12months or so and the timber will last forever as long as you keep it oiled.

Cleetus. im a contractor in texas, i would highly recomend that you dont paint the lumber, it will trap moisture under the paint and rot out much sooner. I would recommend a water sealer or even used motor oil mixed with paint thinner. Keep up the good work. Cant wait to visit the FF

I wouldn’t paint them I’d stain them I’ve seen a lot of wood rot when it’s painted

I sell paint for a living, I suggest using a solid color stain instead of paint. Finished product looks like paint, but does not peel like paint and is a 1 step coating process and is much easier to recoat. On fences you are looking at 5-7 years before it starts to fade and need recoating, with foot traffic on it obviously you'll get less. Just a professional suggestion thougn.

I would recommend using pressure treated 2 X's with Thompson's WaterSeal or equivalent applied once a year! No paint will hold up to heavy foot traffic!

Bud, don't paint the wood. You wanna go with a solid STAIN, if you're looking to seal them. Paint peels, stain fades. You'll have more money wrapped up in prep as far as maintaining the wood over the years rather than a pressure wash and new coat or two of stain. As a finishing expert, I recommend Ben Moore Arborcoat. Although, do some research on special order stains pertaining to UV protection and weathering that might better suit your needs and conditions. DON'T PAINT or you'll be looking at primer costs as well. Make sure your lumber is free and dry of treatment/moisture before getting started! 👍🙂

Also get a quote for that recycled plastic "wood" that's used on decks, it's shaped just like wood but made out of recycled plastic. Never rots

I live on an island in Alaska and it’s technically a “rainforest” pressure treated wood here lasts about 20 years without paint. Wood is a good cheaper route for that, Cleet.

This year is an absolute awful time to be buying treated wood, given lumber futures and the current lack of wood on the market, treated lumber is around 30% higher than last year. Having said that, I'm freaking excited! Much love to you guys and can't wait to join you 🙌

I think in this day and age, you would be better to make the best online/media track, and put in a camera infrastructure not waste time trying to get lots of fans in during these war years. Upgrade the internet, put in a real video control booth/producers and all that, make Freedom Factory TV station, etc keep the small amount of good seating for VIP and friends/family of the drivers but the public has a way better view from their homes...

I'm an amputee (missing my left hand below the elbow) and after watching one of your drift videos, I often wonder if I could do it, somehow, using my right hand and my prosthetic. I've overcome a lot of obstacles since my amputation so I don't doubt, with enough practice, that I could do it. I'm sure you didn't realize it at the time but watching you drift one-handed inspired me. My challenge to you is to drift Donnie with your right hand only and show me that it can be done! I think you also ought to look at both refurbing and increasing your track side signage- maybe even one of those snazzy moving picture signs! As great as this place looks daytimes, it really comes into it's own at night, so getting your lights and service up to snuff is also going to be big. I did property maintenance for years and this is what property owners do: Replace what is bad with pressure treated wood and leave what is OK alone for now. Inspect it a couple of times a year and replace as needed as routine maintenance. You will save a ton of money.

NASCAR track owners have been removing seats by the ten thousands for years. Most tracks have not had a sold-out event since Dale left us. Go slow with the backstretch grandstands. Can't wait to come to a live event.

Pre-sell an event, every butt pays for the seat, divide the cost among all the seats. I'll buy one and give the tickets away if I can't go, but either way, this thing will get taken care of and it will be laughably easy if you spread it out among us. Also, should be aluminum, etch contributors onto them if possible, that'd be neat.

9:30 in - FINALLY - some more info on the Freedom Factory. Very interested in the development of this venue... Am in Australia but am ALWAYS interested in development and redevelopment of anything...especially anything abandoned. Having been involved in motorsport while I was still small enough to get into a car - a long time ago now - makes the Freedom Factory even more interesting to me. Please keep on coming with the development updates of this fantastic venue.

You should have a fundraising concert with local bands to help raise money for the grandstands restoration. It might be difficult though with certain restrictions due to virus concerns. Another idea to consider would be to open a drive-in theater with an inflatable screen.

watching back on these videos, I would love to see a FD event come to the freedom factory, the turns are JUST big enough for two cars and make some intense sessions. Glad they forced cleet into widening the turns

Talk to your accountant about year 1 complete depreciation as well as double declining depreciation. This would give you a ton (presumably) of tax carryover for several years to come. I’m a timber bridge builder from Lutz, FL. call decks and docks down here and get some .8 CCA ground contact lumber. If you seal it I promise you won’t have a problem with those bleachers for at least 20 years maybe longer. We warranty our work and I’ve seen that stuff last close to 40.

You should look into composite decking material, they already come in colors and there is no upkeep or painting or anything to them. We use to build decks around pools and the composite was great for that. You could at least do the tops in that to have a nice seat.

I had to change out the Optispark distributor on my 94 Z28. It got wet. Lucky for me I knew a guy at MSD and was able to get an MSD adjustable timing Optispark distributor for it. I never lost a race against another Camaro from that era, I beat 3 SS Camaros and I had the 6 speed T56.

Marine grade wood. Most boat builders have moved towards Starboard and Coosa board. You could use Divinycell if you reinforce it.

If you paint the wood it'll definitely last awhile. My local track is wood deck and seating, steel structure. The wood is definitely older than 7 years and still really good shape. Just paint every few years. This is up in Canada too with harsh winters

Hey cleat have you thought of (I’m sure you have ) leaving an area open ( either a spot that has bleachers tear them down, area that has nothing there and would just need some TLC or make an area from scratch) and put some grass down and leave it open and allow people to bring fold up chairs, beach towel; or some small stool and have a “general admission” so people can watch the race kinda like how some people watch a concert going on. That way it saves some money of putting bleachers there, and you have a profitable seating area. Saves money from not having to pay for bleachers, and gives you a area you already have to make money on and to allow the fans / customers to enjoy the show from the comfort of their favorite foldable char and the kids room to stand up. Just a thought cleetus.
