When you walk through HAX’s glass doors at 2 Cedar Street in Newark, New Jersey, a giant orange robot arm greets you, perched over a massive installation where Silana’s founders are working on automated robotic sewing machines.
Steps away, you’ll find a team working on a process that turns industrial waste into sustainable cement - all while capturing CO2 (Cocoon Carbon); another few steps will take you to a founder developing an electrochemical technology to enable the rapid, clean, and complete recovery of copper (Still Bright). The projects underway at HAX only get more interesting from there.
The NJEDA made the HAX facility possible by committing $25 million over five years; in exchange, HAX and its parent venture fund SOSV aim to launch 100 companies from HAX’s facility and eventually create thousands of jobs in New Jersey.
HAX is making good on its ambitions. In the 2.5 years since its launch in New Jersey - working out of a temporary Newark space - HAX has brought over 40 companies to Newark and created over 110 jobs. Those 40 companies have raised over $40M of additional capital. HAX also partners with local universities like Rutgers, NJIT, and Princeton, leveraging their expertise and lab space, as well as working closely with students who might one day be HAX founders.
“When we set out to find a new headquarters for HAX in the US, we were looking for an ecosystem that could be the birthplace of the re-industrialisation of the US,” said Duncan Turner, HAX’s managing director and a general partner at SOSV. “We wanted world-class talent close to some of the largest industries in the world where we would have an industrial heritage and infrastructure ready to support our companies’ expansions. Newark really has it all. We have truly exceptional universities with academic departments that are developing IP and talent that will shape the world for generations to come. And we are a train ride away from 2 of the best sources of venture capital in the world. This is a truly unique place.”
As you make your way through the sprawling, open industrial space that HAX now calls home, you’ll encounter a mix of technical founders hard at work on deep technologies ranging from climate to industrial innovation to health.
The new 35,000 square foot facility is full of light, cheerful conversation, and the “music” of industrial grinders, buzz saws, clattering wrenches, and whirring machines. HAX is designed to be a hard tech founder’s dream: the space features a multi-million dollar investment in chemical, mechanical and electrical engineering labs, a wide array of industrial 3D printers, metal fabrication facilities, CNC machining, laser cutting, welding and plasma cutting, metrology, and more.
