This is how Carb Diaphragms Actually Work

A compact two-stroke chainsaw carburetor's metering diaphragm and fuel pump diaphragm play key roles in ensuring that the engine receives the proper air and fuel ratio for effective combustion. Let's investigate how these diaphragms work:
Fuel Pump Diaphragm: The fuel pump diaphragm is frequently the first part in the fuel circuit of the carburetor. gasoline delivery from the gasoline tank to the carburetor and then the engine is its main duty. The fuel pump diaphragm depends on pressure changes brought on by the engine's cycles to function.
This is how it goes:
Crankcase Pressure Pulses: As the engine operates, the crankcase experiences pressure pulses. During the intake and exhaust strokes of the engine, the piston moves and the volume of the crankcase changes, causing these pulses.
Impulse Line: The crankcase and carburetor are connected by an impulse line, which is how these crankcase pressure pulses are communicated. The carburetor receives the pressure changes through this connection.
Diaphragm Flexing: The gasoline pump diaphragm in the carburetor flexes when pressure pulses from the crankcase reach it. Fuel is pumped from the fuel tank through the carburetor's input valve and into the metering chamber as a result of the movement of the diaphragm.
Fuel Delivery: The fuel pump diaphragm pumps fuel into the carburetor, where it is ready to be combined with air and fed to the engine, in a steady and consistent flow.
Metering Diaphragm:
The metering diaphragm is another critical component of the carburetor, responsible for controlling the amount of fuel delivered to the engine based on varying engine demands.
Here's how it works:
Airflow and Pressure: As the engine runs, air flows through the carburetor, creating varying levels of air pressure within the carburetor's metering chamber.
The metering diaphragm is set up to respond to these variations in air pressure. The increase in airflow results in a decrease in pressure in the metering chamber when the engine requires more fuel, such as during acceleration or under heavy load.
The measuring diaphragm flexes inward in reaction to the decreased pressure. More gasoline may now flow from the carburetor's fuel bowl into the engine's intake airflow thanks to the flexing motion that opens the metering diaphragm's valve.
Control of the air-fuel mixture: The metering diaphragm precisely controls the amount of fuel delivered to the airflow in order to adjust the air-fuel mixture to the engine's needs under various operating situations.
The air-fuel mixture is adjusted in accordance with the needs of the engine, whether it is idling, accelerating, or operating at full throttle, thanks to the cooperation of the fuel pump diaphragm and metering diaphragm. The compact two-stroke chainsaw engine can function effectively and efficiently under a variety of operating situations thanks to this dynamic control.

I never drew the distinction that their were actually 2 distinct diaphragms. Your instructions and explanations are always bang on!

If I put the metering diaphragm against my lips and blow, it sounds like a small amount of air if passing through the centre of it. Is this normal?

The neck on the needle is a greater measurement than the thickness of the metering lever, So there's a portion of movement where the metering lever is moving without the needle moving, So....isn't it vacuum pulling fuel in? I'm not sure of how much travel diaphragm has. I once mistakenly set the metering lever to be at the top of the neck on needle resulting in flooding n then realized that the lever's only real function is to hold needle seated, this was my first attempt at doing a cube carby. Very interested in your opinion.

Your interest for studying carburetor mechanics is admirable. Let's see if i can answer your questions: It is possible for the metering lever to move, very slightly, without the needle moving if the neck of the little two-stroke carburetor needle is larger than the thickness of the fork of the lever. As you correctly observed, it is significant to notice that the metering lever's principal purpose in this instance is to maintain the needle's seated position. The movement of the needle is essential for adjusting the fuel flow to the requirements of the engine. Yes, you are right, that is exactly how the fuel gets drawn in, by the vacuum! Fuel is forced through the carburetor and into the combustion chamber by the vacuum (via the main jet hole out of the metering chamber) produced by the engine's intake stroke. By reacting to variations in pressure, the diaphragm is essential in controlling this process. The diaphragm's travel varies according on this particular carburetor design. To ensure accurate fuel metering, different carburetors use varied diaphragm movements. To make sure the diaphragm is operating within the acceptable range, it is crucial to consult the manufacturer's instructions or a specialised carburetor handbook. I hope I'm on the right track here and forgive me if I have gone off course a little, or a lot! Craig

hmmmm let's say my 32cc zenoa it's carb gasket bottom hole does not line up. is that why I'm having so many fuel issues 😞 hmmm it must be that gasket because it was reversed when I got the truck. yes used RC the RC wouldn't run. then I flipped the gasket over and it then would run. but the hole don't line up. it's almost closed. I best fix that I think ohh it's a wt 1107 carb

Well If the gasket holes don't line up then the carb most probably wont run right, if at all. These small carbs are very sensitive. Thanks Craig
