Join us as we enter ESA's Heritage Missions data archive, which stores Earth observation data dating back to the 1970s.
ESA preserves this historical record from past satellite missions, which provides valuable information for long-term studies. The datasets from these missions are not only preserved, but continuously improved over time with reprocessing activities that make them compatible with products acquired by more recent missions and apply new processing algorithms that can improve the accuracy and quality of the products.
The presenter, Malì, is wearing an ESA t-shirt in the video, which is available for sale on the ESA online shop: www.esaspacesh...

really cool. But a bit less preachy PR speech and a bit more information, technical and behind the scenes stuff would make it way more interesting.

Ok, those ESA cabinet temperature displays are cool. I have the APC cabinets, I need to know where to get those displays though, that's sharp.

Do they also archive the raw data from the satellites in case their is an error in the processing pipeline?
@Dakta96
@Dakta96 8 дней назад
The raw data is generally stored at the station in the form of CLTU. You also have some packetised data stored in various digital packet archives depending on the missions (some very old ones are not packetised but it's the same principle), backups included. What you see in the video is both a backup and long term storage for all of that data. I hope it's clear enough, I probably forgot a few things.

@@Dakta96 Cheers. - I'm curious about the level of processing that's done on the data before it is stored. I assume the satellites do some online processing of the sensor values, but do they also send raw sensor values before any calibration, smoothing, or other filters are applied back to Earth for storage? As an undergraduate and graduate student, I did some research (not related to space or earth science) and always made sure to keep all the raw sensor data in case I later discovered an error in one of the processing steps. The challenge with that approach was the sheer amount of data I had to store (only ~20TB, but that was still a lot too handle for me at the time). I assume ESA faces a similar dilemma, i.e., store all the raw sensor data and derivative data products, or be absolutely certain that the algorithms which process the data are 100% correct and delete the raw data after processing. Long story short: do you happen to know how "raw" basically the data is that ESA stores?

We archive Raw and Level-0 data to make sure we can restart from the beginning in case of errors in the processing pipeline but also to be able to improve the processing pipeline and reprocess new datasets with better quality and aligned to newer missions. Heritage data are continuously improved and need to start this process from Raw/Level-0 every time.

Thanks for showing us this and how important it is to keep records. I am curious though, how and where the back-ups are facilitated?

Good to hear the data is being safely stored. I presume as tech changes, the data stored currently will be moved to new media and everything is backed up?
@EuropeanSpaceAgency
@EuropeanSpaceAgency День назад
Everything is properly backed-up and data are migrated to new technologies every 5-6 years. Now using LTO-9 tapes with next migration planned in a few years. Back-up is usually kept on a different technology.

You know from reincarnation research, everything is recorded. All optical observations through eyes 👀 and thoughts are recorded and can be played back as it happen, not probabilities but actualities. With no hardware needed. How? I'm glad you asked. ☺️
