I always love it when Trevor analyzes the mechanics of pitching. Keep forgetting that he was an engineering major in UCLA and it makes total sense that he would approach pitching this way.

This channel is turning into such a great resource for any baseball player interested in playing in Japan. The pros and cons are hard to wrap your head around when you've never been to the country, but this really shows a candid look into the everyday life of a pro baseball player.

We don’t have a “comic book store” culture like in the States. If you are looking for manga (Japanese comics), you can just go to regular bookstores at any train station mall and find most of them. Kinokuniya or Tsutaya would also be the place to go. Book-Off is also great for used comics and books. Akihabara specializes in Doujinshi (fan-written comics based on popular manga, anime, games, etc), figurines and games that are not quite suitable for 18 and under as you have experienced.

For arcades, it sounds like you might like Round One. The Round One Stadium in Odaiba (Diver City) especially has lots of special physical and sports games/activities. The term for any game with a physically interactive element is “taikan game” (体感ゲーム). Basically though, you might have to go to quite a few arcades before you find your home. Arcades in Japan tend to specialize quite a bit, each catering to its own small niche. As for anime and game culture, Trader was a good find! I also like the big Mandarake in Akihabara. But also you should go to Nakano Broadway, really nice place to wander around. After that the area around Ikebukuro is also great with its own unique vibe. 👾

My favorite thing is how much TB loves to interact with the fans. He needs to get a teacher so he can learn to speak and understand would love to see the faces of fans light up when they can connect over conversation rather than just smiles.

These videos are not only fun and interesting to see what a baseball player does in their free time in Japan, but very educational with how you break down pitching. Please keep these videos up and I wish you the best.

For anime start with either vinland saga, demon slayer jujutsu kaisen or something else on Netflix. The Pokémon, Dragon ball and Yugioh cartoons were most peoples first introduction to anime in the west. One reason why anime is so popular is because there are so many different genres so there is usually at least one anime for everyone. Anime usually has significantly more story and character development than western cartoons and is more like full blown tv shows rather than your classic cartoons. Hope this helps

Trevor, the character you referred to as the "Pig Headed Swordsmith" is Inosuke from the anime Demon Slayer. If you were going to learn about Japanese anime, watching Demon Slayer would actually be the perfect place to start. It is extremely popular in America and in Japan. It's very well animated, good voice acting, good story, and it's got a lot of the common anime tropes. Think you would enjoy it and it would help you learn. (Please watch in Japanese with English subtitles though, especially since you want to learn the language.)

Trevor, you need to go to Round One for the big arcade experience you are thinking of... they have several throughout the greater Tokyo area. I'd recommend going to the Odaiba one!

19:34 wait until Trevor learns how much Yu-Gi-Oh has changed as a card game. He'll be stunned like many have. 20:53 if he wants baseball anime, Ace of Diamond and Major are two of the most popular ones internationally. But for anime in general there's so much to pick and there's something for someone out there, even for the lowest degenerates. People's tastes are different but there's these two movies called Your Name (Kimi no na Wa) and Howl's Moving Castle that are widely considered two of the most goated ever. Also there's Akira which popularized the Cyberpunk setting that's everywhere now from AAA video games to Hollywood. Also I think he should definitely go watch the high school national tournament at Koshien to see why the Hanshin Tigers get kicked out of their home ground every year in the peak of Summer. If not, the Kanto (a catch-all term for the greater Tokyo area) qualifiers for said tournament at Meiji Jingu is also a great alternative.

As for baseball I think "Major" is a good anime. As for the recent era we've got "One Outs" "Ace of Diamonds" and "Mix" If you want normal anime's, "Death Note" "Attack on Titan" "Demon Slayer" "Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood" and Japans obsession "One Piece". I suggest watching a anime called Ace of Diamond(Daiya no Ēsu). It’s a high school baseball anime, with two unique first year pitchers. One is a lefty with a unique delivery with a moving fastball, and the other is a righty with just high heat. It’s not only about the pitchers it’s about the high school baseball team as a whole. Great story with great characters.

The game at 19:00 is called Gundam EXVS2 XBoost, there are definitely some English guides on how to play but it's probably the most popular fighter/arena fighter in arcades, some places are just those games for multiple floors, simple-ish to learn but tricky as hell to master.

As a scientist/researcher, I love watching your methodical approach to everything! I'd argue that your self-description would be more aptly described as "A 'nerd' that is also a pro baseball player!" haha, because even when you're 50+ years old and your playing days are over, the scientific approach to life will still be within you (e.g., maybe you'll be into bourbon and will want to double-blind taste everything to build up a great whiskey collection, or something w/ gardening, etc)

Great video Trevor, it's been really fun to get a look into the life of a player in japan and just how much things differ from how things are in the US. On the note of anime, while I don't really have a series that I could recommend (since tastes differ from person to person), I think the appeal of anime, or at least to me, is that you can have any sort of story be made and since it's animation you can get away with a bit more in the way of emotions, storylines, and artstyles. There's a really broad range of what type of series you could get, from something adult oriented (in terms of story and it's themes), you can get series that are more aimed at kids (sort of like the cartoons you'll see on things like Nickelodeon), you can get a series that's set in a world that's not like our own (sort of like what you might see in some of the marvel comics), you can even get series that are deal with the ultra-mundane like a regular office worker. There are so many possibilities to what a story can be about, and thanks to it being animated you can make the world look exactly as you'd like. Maybe I did a poor job of explaining it but hopefully I was able to get the general gist of what I think the charm to anime is. You would never be able to walk around the streets with that camera equipment in the US. You’d get mugged. That place is so clean! Puts the US to shame. Such a different level of respect the Japanese have for their country.

I like watching your videos after living in Japan for over 20 years. I’m also a BayStars fan. I’ve played and coached baseball for over 40 years. I currently coach at the Native American school I work at in Arizona. You asked for anime to watch: anything from Studio Ghibli, currently Spy Family and Demon Hunter are popular. Komi Can’t Communicate is fun especially since I used to teach at Japanese high schools. がばれ！

I guess if you want some Dave & Busters type place, try Round 1. That would be the closest equivalent. But if you’re going for more retro, usually small and old places. For anime, plenty of places. Ikebukuro (sunshine building) has the Pokémon center Mega. They also have a dedicated One Piece store there as well, and a bigger animate

I grew up in a village of 2,300 in the mountains of New York. I loved/love baseball. My town is most famous for beating the Soviets in hockey, 4-3, but it had no summer baseball after age 13, and I went to the local private school, which had no team. My pitching coach was two pictures of Jim Gott gripping a four-seam fastball and a slider in a Sports Illustrated article. Despite that, my arm was good enough to walk on in college, but, GD, I am jealous I didn't have access to videos like this.

It's still kinda odd to me that when your in Japan you could just find a Pro player just walking the streets. It's super rare to just see an MLB player in the wild in the US.

Regarding arcades in japan, they aren't catered for families, so they don't have a wide variety of games and tend to be focused on the sort of games they offer, except for crane games, which are just everywhere. If you are looking for music games like DDR, akihabara is the most concentrated area with those games, with game panic on the corner, leisureland 2 on a higher floor of the building where you got overwhelmed with the loud sounds upon entering the doors and GIGO 3rd(GIGO 3号館）, which is a different GIGO outlet you entered(iirc it is GIGO 1st that you went inside). For a more general spread of games, Hey! arcade in akihabara has the biggest spread of games in akihabara that I know of, with bullet hell games, gundam and fighting games on the higher floors. Otherwise, the aforementioned GIGO 3rd is a good place too, the top floor on that arcade has a floor with only "retro" game, with the word "retro" being used rather loosely as these games are retro to japanese audience, but I suspect these would be games you are more familiar with, like Daytona driving simulator and time crisis. As for anime to start off with, it would be great if you would mention what sort of genres you are interested in. IMO, the greatest strength of anime is wide variety of quality stories that are told. If you are looking for something more akin to Dragon Ball Z, the modern day equivalent would be My Hero Academia(aka Boku no Hero Academia), with a very distinct american influence in that anime. For something a bit more fantastical, I would recommend mushoku tensei, its the first popular series of its kind that basically kickstarted an entirely new genre of anime in recent memory, where there started to produce a lot more anime about the MC reincarnating into another world. Finally, my personal pick would be Vivy: Fluorite's Eye Song, an anime about a songstress android attempting to change history 100 years into the future where humanity is wiped. The reason why I pick this is because I think its criminally underrated in the anime community currently and I know of a friend who wasn't into anime but enjoyed this when I was doing a watchalong with my friends. It’s a baseball anime that focuses on a highschool team in Japan with the main character being a pitcher. Hope you give anime a try and find some shows you really enjoy.

Just watched your Seibu Lions game, you’re tipping your pitches; almost all fastballs you’re holding your glove at your belly button, almost all off-speed pitches you’re holding your glove closer to your belt. We’re talking about an inch of distance at most. Check the video from behind the mound and you’ll see off-speed pitches where the glove overlaps the belt line.

Really love to Trevor soaking in as much Japan as he can. Anime is just Japanese animation but the styles, colors, and plots of anime vary so much and can have so much depth at the same time compared to American animation.

The anime thing is something that you can't really just dive into because it's very easy to fall into the worst parts of it. You'll feel like you need a shower. My suggestion is to start by watching a few. Your dragon balls. Your Narutos. The mainstream stuff and then branch out from there. There's pretty much an anime for everything so keep that in mind. I would suggest an anime called Diamond no Ace. It's a baseball anime about a young high school pitcher. Very well animated with fun characters. Gives a little insight into the high school standard of baseball which is rather intense.

I used to live in Japan for over 10 years and Yoshinoya is one of my favorite places to eat :) I know it's not the best quality but it's delicious. Love your videos, Bauer!!

Anime...my son started me with Attack on Titan and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. You won't regret either of them. Also, love your mechanical analysis. Young pitchers would do well to watch how a professional perfects his craft.

In terms of anime exposure these are all just ideas Shopping and looking around: . There are tons of bookstores that have manga. Places like kinokuniya should have English . Harajuku and Asakusa (While both places do have anime stuff in them they’re mostly just really fun places to walk through although they can get crowded occasionally) Anime History(if you want a super deep dive): Kyoto International Museum (It’s far from Yokohama so plan accordingly) Ghibli Museum Suginami Animation Museum Anime’s to watch: Demon slayer (cause it’s a fun anime and also got lots of merch like the boar man you saw) Ace of Diamond(good baseball anime) Master(good baseball anime)
