This video is an edited version of the mini-documentary "This is Kenjutsu" produced by Antony Cummins and the Samurai and Ninja Historical Research Team. It was filmed and edited in Velencia by the European Bugei Society. It is a demonstration based on our translation of the document known as the Shinkage-Ryu Heiho Mokuroku no Koto (新陰流兵法目録事). This document goes by a verity of names as is shown in the documentary but is often simply known as the Yagyu Ryu picture scroll. It must be fully understood that this document was not written by a single person, it was an amalgamation of knowledge which was developed between the 16th and 18th centuries and therefore contains contradictions within its own text. Our team has analysed all the available related medieval scrolls to provide the most accurate translation we can, yet still, there is room for improvement. It could be said that this demonstration is 90% accurate but parts may change depending on new information or a better interpretation because much of the information needed is either lost or is kept in private collections. Japanese kenjutsu practitioners may notice that the skills shown in this documentary differ from the skills which are often shown in the modern version of Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, this is because those skills have changed over time and anyone who has read the original scrolls can confirm this. That being said, we are very proud of the project which has taken two years to complete. We hope that you enjoy it and that you would like to help our team continue to do research of a similar nature. Please follow the links below to take you on to the points mentioned in the documentary.

In book of five rings it says something about (I think it was) the three screams. These were basically done to remove fear from the body, intimidate the enemy and put extra force into the blow, if I recall correctly, so that's why they're screaming.

Taking what I learned only in the intro of one of Antony's books, "Samurai and Ninja," (2015) Tuttle Publishing: All that considering that in a real-life fight, it most often was not one-to-one but many-to-many, or even many-one. It's almost like saying in the year 2500, "this is how people in the old days [2024] fought with 9mm hand guns. Many fought like this in war." No, actually. It all depended on the context. As in war it's often many-to-many, with all sides having different weapons, techniques, counter-techniques, etc. But I guess this would be equivalent to the British duel, when one man would challenge another, and they'd both stand some distance away and try to be the first to draw and shoot, preferably accurately enough to hit his opponent. But that kind of fight was the exception, not the rule. I'm sure the majority of the time, knowing human beings, samurai would try to sneak an attack before his opponent knew what was coming. Even in war that's how it's done.

Kata are the basics. You train the basics until they are muscle memory, and then... when the shit hits the above lantern, you have something to fall back on. People rarely rise to the occasion, that is the exception. Most people fall back on their most basic of training, say when on a battlefield. Thus, laying a good foundation is paramount. What you see here, are just what you might do on the battlefield if the situation arises. Kata are often very specific too, like "Walking, enemy following, you step under an arch which constricts your attack, and a second enemy steps in front of you, trapping you under the arch." - Without that context, some kata can look really silly.

Choreographed kata, no matter how well practiced and executed, cannot ever reveal the truth of what an actual fight looks like. If one had psychic foreknowledge of how the opponent would react, I'm sure anyone could "fight" like this. A real life fight, with or without swords, is an incredibly messy and stressful affair.

Great video. Very interesting. But a few remarks: The success of counterattacks in preparation rests on the fact that all attacks are made with a preparatory swing. All attack are even without an attempt to exit it or any subsequent parry from comming riposte. The use of the mechanical advantage of blades in defense is not observed.

For sager training like this id suggest also using the shinkage wrapped shinai. It hurts but it wont break bones or cause the blunt force trauma a bokken will. Theres no after shock to your hands as well 😂 thats probably something most swordsman dont know about.

Shouldn't be surprised that there's so much very similar techniques as there is for longsword. What did surprise me, though, was the amount of attacks to hands. Nothing wrong with that, of course, just something that surprised me.

Oh, and as I've tried to work out in my imagination how people might have fought in real life, I have always thought of going for the wrists. Easier to reach, takes them out of the fight, and often uses their own momentum against them.

Musashi summarised it something like this. The wrists are vital points essential for swordplay, and they are often extended in front of the body, making them the easiest target. You don't need to cut someone's head off to win the fight, just make the opponent unable to continue, which is why so many attacks are targetting the wrist.

I cant wait to buy the book for this, if your giving the book. The katas look really interesting at full speed. I can kinda imgine how terrifiying those battles must have been. We are staring each other down...lots of yelling insuses and now someones hands is missing or a head. I the sengoku era must have been both.

Kobudo exist today, with kenjutsu, still being passed down from the Sengoku era. We know they taught what they learned from the Sengoku era, in the Edo period. It's still ongoing. So, my question is, What era are these kata from? They seem kind of raw, compared to what you see from headmasters of kubodo today, and that isn't an insult... it just leads me to believe it's from an earlier time. One more thing, if I may, your viewers should know these were performed in full armor, (obviously a long kimono, that is accounted for in the kata of my Sensei's art) with two Katana. When it looks like awkward running and slicing at the eyes, it's because that's exactly what it was, a little awkward. It's the price you pay for armor, even lightweight armor. You also have to account for the Wakizashi as well, in the kata, so lots of obliques when striking downward. Very interesting stuff, thank you for sharing! Appreciate the effort you put into these!!

A lot of these look like techniques for a smart efficient swordsman working against a silly movie-style swordsman. My intuition is that the really good stuff would have been what happens between two smart efficient swordsman, and that that wouldn't look like even this. Still one begins to sense what some of the basic principles may have been.

Correction! Sauron forges the one ring. He executes Celembribor the forger of rings. Alot of different rings i see lol. Sauron tortures Celebrimbor until he reveals where the seven rings are. However he will not tell Sauron the location of the three rings so the dark lord executes him. Reading from your book as I type lol sorry for getting it wrong in the first comment. Tolkien book came in a couple weeks ago. I was flipping through the pages and read a little here and there. I really like the art work at the beginning of the first and third age. I've seen all the movies haven't read any of the books. It's going to be a fun read. Really like the explanation of the elves and how they focused on stealth after they saw they couldn't hang with the orcs. I'm just going off the top of my head i don't remember if it was green elves or woodland elves. I read that bit where Sauron transformed into a werewolf. Man I wish that would've made it into the movies lol. I read that bit where orcs were using the man who created the one ring as target practice... wild... im now inspired to get all of Tolkiens books to complete the journey into his world. What do you recommend... do I read your book first then Tolkiens works? Or do I read your book alongside Tolkiens books?
