I work with a large amount of el Salvadorans probably with similar stories like your father. They ALL love the guy.

What he's done with crime in his country is incredible. The homicide rate went from 50 per 100,000, to 3 per 100,000 by locking up the gangs. In the U.S. the government is arresting harmless taxpayers for exercising their rights, and letting gangs run rampant.

Bukele is not perfect. There are accusations that he is protecting corruption for the home team, among his allies. Even under Bukele's rule, it was found that there was a criminal organization (like a mafia) that we embedded in the government under Bukele's police commissioner. His police commissioner has gotten off, so far, with no investigation, much less conviction. Bukele completely dismantled the separation of powers and all of the transparency agencies in his government. Today, it's totally impossible to tell where any of the money goes, there's no way for people to audit contracts or government spending. All that to say: stay vigilant. If someone's telling you something you want to hear, don't give up your skepticism and street smarts.

You understand El Salvador is NOT a democracy now. He has cleaned up the country as a dictator and whether you agree with his approach or not El Salvador is a MUCH better place. BUT will he return the country to a democracy? For that we will have to wait and see.
