I was the opposite. I saw this book years before I ever read it, and thought the cover was so boring I never even picked it up. Ended up adoring it. SO glad I read it. The cheesiness is a lesbian thing lol. Men dont like talking about feelings. Two women do nothing but go on about our feelings.

Glad you enjoyed it. Funny it was the cover design that drew me to it. Definitely catches your eye amid a wall of "insert generic concept art here" books.

Exactly it's extremely queer longing

i skipped to the part about how he felt about the writing. and when he read the quote aloud, i was expected him to gush about how beautiful it was ❤ when he said it was melodramatic bullshit, i audibly said 'gosh men are annoying' lmaoo no offense this is how my ex gf and i talked after a month of being with eachother. just because you don't understand somethkng doesn't mean it's bad 😂

I too felt that the authors were far more focused on prose structure and lyricism than with propelling the story. Conversely, concerning the two protagonists' similarities, one might conclude that either the extreme, idealized versions of networked entities - mechanistic or organic - will converge to near-identical forms. Each exemplifies the best of their philosophy by breaking from it and roaming as incomplete individuals. Cliched though it may be, they find and literally complete each other.

I like that idea. Totally valid in the context of the story. Thanks for the comment!

Imo the lyricism made it easier to understand why they fall in love so fast

Good point. I hadn't thought of that, but the music of language in letters can have that effect.

I actually disagree, i just read it and thought it was really good, at least the second half of it. It had a slow start, but they really nailed the ending in my opinion. I did notice a difference between the characters. Great video though, it’s nice to hear some different opinions.

Great review! Just discovered your channel, and was encouraged to find that so many points you make about this novel hit the nail head on (for me). Other reviewers (and people who I talked to about the book) seem to praise it without really saying what they like about it, so when I didn't really like it, I was a bit at a loss for why. Your videos are really nicely made as well! I look forward to enjoying more of your content.

Appreciate it! That's part of the reason I started reviewing. No one I watched would articulate exactly what was good or bad. Maybe it's because I write as well so every book I read is both for enjoyment and education.

Time travel stories are always hard because often they get lost in the mechanics of how it would work. This is one of those that I hear about often but I haven't read yet. Hopefully I'll get around to it at some point. Good review as always.

It's not the time travel that's really the issue. That's just set dressing. It's all the other stuff. I'd be curious to hear your opinion though.

I can admire experimentalism, but yeah I'm not thinking this book would be for me. Although I do kinda have a soft spot for books that eschew exposition in favor of just throwing you to the wolves, so to speak. XD It can make a world feel more legitimate if the author doesn't hold your hand and just lets the reader figure it out.

Yeah it's hard to recommend. It's a short read though if you're ever curious. 50k words.

Let me know what you think. It's really short so won't take much of your time, even if you don't end up liking it.

Great review, Jason! As a reader who enjoys romance fiction / fiction with love stories as one of my genres, it’s great to see you review a book with some of these themes! Here’s to more! 😀 Hopefully it’s convinced you there is some quality work in this genre even if this one wasn’t a 100% match. I actually thought the excerpt you shared had the potential to be touching but I agree that’d it’d depend on the buy-in in the lead up to that and sounds like that buy-in was greatly jeopardised by the poor characterisation. That’s disappointing for sure. I have it on my bookshelf so I’ll circle back here when I get around to reading it but great review and it definitely left me intrigued to see how it lands with me. Thanks again!

Thanks! I'm not at all opposed to reading stories with romance, as long as they don't neglect the actual story. There's definitely some good things about this book, so I'll be curious to hear what you think. The tricky thing with the writing is buying the reality and the emotions. I didn't with this one, which is why it fell flat. It's purely subjective and I know plenty of people liked this one, and there's a lot I respect about it.

@@JasonFuhrman I’d even go a step further and say I’m happy if the romance is the main story if it’s done well but I know that won’t be for everyone. It was good to hear there were some positives in the book too. Yes I’ll defo let you know when I get around to it. Thanks again!

I agree with many of your points. This one greatly fell short for me. All hype little substance.

It's too bad because the premise of the book had promise. It just devolved into melodrama.
