Haha, reminds me of a time just over 40 years ago - I had majored in jazz performance on bass (which at that time meant playing like Stanley Clark and Jaco Pastorius), but really wanted to be a studio musician. I then was recommended to Carol Kaye by one of my professors, and she took me on as a student and mentored me for a few months. At our first sitting, she said "Let's hear your style - play something"... Having had some good chops training by that point, I showed off a bit. She said "oh, that's pretty good - and no one will ever pay you to do that! I'm going to show you how to appreciate half and whole notes again." I learned more in those 4 months than I had in my years of education and playing that came before it.
Yeah. The beauty was, is and always will be in simplicity, i.e. in take the complex and trim it down to simple ideas that can be understood by wider audience. It's valid in every form of arts, sports and in many other aspects of life. Don't get me wrong - being able to play complex stuff has it's own value but you'll very seldom get very far with it. Even so-called sophisticated listeners eventually get tired of all that sophistication and will end up preferring AC/DC over ELP.
I used to play guitar in a metal band and we auditioned 4 bassist at one point, NONE of which had their own bass amp. You wanna stand out? Buy a bass amp. One dude didn’t own a bass anymore and had to borrow mine, and another just didn’t feel like bringing his bass to the audition cause he wanted to ride his motorcycle.
Rock auditions. I wrote an ad “ must have phone car chops rig clue” and you’d( not) be surprised at how many would show up without one or more of the job requirements
@@geraldfriend256 In my experience vocalists are the worst for this. It seems like the majority of them don't own even a decent microphone. How on earth are you going to be the singer in my band if you don't have anything to sing through...
Last audition I did, I knew the tunes better than their drummer Had to lend the singer my microphone I bought to do BVs They had been in hiatus for 6 months, and were a little under prepared.
So I am a guitar player who also plays bass. I get asked to play bass often because 90% of the time I just keep it simple and play root notes. While I know it's boring I focus on having the best tone that I can have and I lock in with the drummer, that's why I get offers. Again, I am a guitar player but being a "Bass-ic Bitch" keeps me in having options. 😎👍✨
@@khalez1471 You absolutely missed the point. Bands don't want showboat bass players, they want a bass to lock in with the drums and not to outshine the singers, guitars, and keys. So no. For every bass player who I played with who thought they were Les Claypool, Flea, or Bootsy Collins, they definitely were not. In fact me playing rhythm guitar kept better time then they did. The vast majority of songs do not call for tricky playing either. There's a great saying about a really good bass player is hardly noticed but it's DEFINITELY NOTICEABLE if you don't have a good bass player.
@@gringogreen4719 there is no such a thing called "keep it simple", it's about serving the song. Players like jeff berlin for exemple serve the song but in the same time he's insane. I am talkin' about being in a good band of course with good musicianship.

Thank goodness; in my experience most guitar players get on bass, get bored and start overplaying. Or other nuances of the guitar start coming in. I can almost always tell when listening to bands. YOUR JOB IS THE GROOVE!!! Just remember the role and play what your bass dude would do. Tying the rhythm to the chord structure so everyone knows what song you're playing while the guitar player is doing that guitar thing. The next step is listen to a lot of bass lines and try them. You can leave the roots. Oh, the other important thing; know the bass HOOKS! If there's a particular thing that stands out on a hit, there's a reason it's a hit. Play that, at the very least.

As someone who had to audition bassists for my band: know how to play decently, have some groove, DONT OVERPLAY, and actually move around and be confortable and confident interacting with the audience, if you’re just gonna stand there, while playing the simplest parts of the songs thats a No Go
The world’s sexiest bass players are Wakazaemon of East of Eden, closely followed by Yuuki Hirose of Lonesome_Blue and Mina - X Girlfriend. They are also depressingly talented too.
You have obviously never heard of Cliff Burton. But your right, you need to know when to stand out and when to back up. Besides bands that take turns with their talents standing out in the songs always sounds better to me personally.
Played bass for a few years in a pick-up band - when I'd ask if my baseline was working, my bandmates would reply like, "Uh... yeah, sure. You're fine." They weren't even paying attention. Which I suppose meant I was doing my job

i come from a metalhead background and im a chick - anesthesia pulling teeth worked a treat every single time. (and yes, being able to jump into whatever they're playing and jam after that of course)
i play bass but i don’t consider myself a bass player, but i think you missed one that’s super important and that’s having really good rhythm/groove especially if you can match up with the drummer
Knowing. The fkng. Song. Don’t guess or “feel out” the changes if you’re playing bass. You’ll stand out way more if you play basic, tight, bass line the hits every change dead on, than trying to show someone you can play licks that absolutely nobody cares about.

I started off playing stand up bass in an orchestra at 11 yo. Then I switched to electric bass after I couldn’t be in the orchestra cause it took too much driving time from my parents. I wasn’t the craziest bass player, but my bands loved me because I could count to 4 like a mfer and only focused on training myself to be a human metronome. I ended up on guitar and forgot all those skills 😂

I also auditioned as a singer for a run of the mill covers band once, just to see if I could pull it off. I got there. Everyone was setting up. I was talking with the bass player about his dive alpine white P, and asked him if I could have a play. Noodled a few bites then smashed out a Louis Johnson Star Licks inspired slap bass line or 3. Smiled and handed it back. They were all looking at m, not quite knowing what to say. I just said to them. _Gentlemen, this is the best I will sound tonight. Everything from this moment on will be down hill_ I made the short list, but declined a second audition, assuring them that they had already found someone more suitable, after they told me whom I was up against. They thanked me and we stayed in touch for a while.
