Our bodies are pretty incredible, so far we’ve covered what blood is made of, what the different blood types are, and in this Human episode we are exploring how our bodies actually make more blood.
The creation, maintenance, and filtration of blood is a unique process that’s different from our other cells. Luckily, we’ve got some organs and physiology up for the task.
So unlike when our body wants to create new skin cells or stomach cells using mitosis, creating new blood cells requires a bit more work. Red blood cells can’t make direct copies of themselves because they ditch their nuclei as they mature. So your body has to constantly manufacture and eject blood in order to keep the correct number of cells in circulation so you can continue to, well, function.
And this whole process starts in the bone marrow and utilizes a number of different organs along the way including the liver and spleen.
Find out more about how our body continues to produce new blood in this Human.

“Ill-conceived blood transfusions go back to the 1600’s (disastrous transfusions of lamb’s blood into humans), and the discovery of the ABO system goes back to the early 1900s. But just how old is blood itself? A picture from the Smithsonian in 2009 showed a red blood cell (RBC) in the soft tissue of a Tyrannosaurus Rex bone from 68 million years ago. But blood cells go back, really far back.”

I give blood every 2-3 months. Everyone should, if eligible. I had a skin graft surgery in 2014, I required 31 units of blood products. At least that's what I was told. So I've been trying ever since to pay it back. Although I've been donating fairly regularly since 2002, and I've donated 5 gallons total, plus I've done 2 platelet donation (although I'm not allowed to anymore, so I was told last time I have platelets) Platelet donation are greatly appreciated, but absolutely not for the faint of heart....90 minutes minimum stuck in a chair with a horse needle in each arm....can't get up the whole time. Strenuous is how I'd describe it.

@Ex Animus u don't have to get immediately mad and start insulting, that is not really "intelligent" from you. Also I've never been into Harry Potter, just seen the movies a few times, but wanted to point out that if you can use a decent fiction book reference, why not? Don't know what that world revolving around me thingy and me being so clever (never said anything like that, in fact I wrote just like 1 sentence 😀) was supposed to mean, but I reckon your simple brain (as you would say) just had an error or something. PS: Never use ROFLMFAO ever again, for your own good, it's so 2010.

@Ex Animus Not gonna reply to the beginning of your comment because you again completely misunderstood everything and just started avoiding and insulting yet again my smart KIDDO. If you feel that way then ok, it's your opinion. I'm done here, you present no arguments or anything sensible. Peace

OK, Seeker, riddle me this: Many red blood cells are made in our bones. So, how do those cells get out and get into the blood stream? Let's say the red blood cells are very small and flexible, but why wouldn't they defuse out of the bones and go everywhere into the body? How do they know how to get into the blood stream specifically?

I've have been donating whole blood for 10 years, once per year with no problems. Two years ago I donated platelets for the first time. I couldn't stop bleeding for 20 minutes after donation and at my last physical over a year later I was diagnosed with low platelet count. There is no history in my large family (sibling, parents, grandparents cousins, aunts or uncles) of low platelets, nor have I been exposed to radiation or chemicals. I have always been in perfect health until I donated platelets.

I donated today... And was told blood regenerates. ....But I have a really dumb question... If blood regenerates, then why should we donate our blood in the first place ? -- and what is the point of transfusions? Can the blood not be regenerated when it's lost past a certain threshold ? And can everyone regenerate blood in the same way ? Like what if I have a mitochondria issue I was never aware of...would I be damaged forever ? What about slightly anemic? My hemo was only 131. And what if you have sickle cell TRAIT? So dumb I'm sorry I know... Someone was trying to tell me that our blood *doesn't* regenerate and now I'm freaking out haha 😅

😎Amazing how you explained the purpose, the creation and the manipulation of blood. It makes me think from a micro perspective to a astro prospective of function in general. I believe we were created to assist the Earth to mature and continue its evolution just as cells to an organ. Sorry if Im in too deep lol😅
