Thank you so much for this video. Watching a slow journey, taking in the various places of interest along the way and the family activities on board is so nice. Plenty of channels provide content if we want to watch a fast trip around the world, which I occasionally do!. But it is lovely to join your family trip and have us experience the journey with you.

I loved and appreciated the tour through Menai Strait. As I have said before, my grandfather served on the small (80ft) Navy Motor Launches there during WW1 when they searched for submarines and drifting mines. He had lots of stories of the area and taught me to pronounce Llanfai PG which has been my Welsh party trick ever since. Thank you for bringing his stories to life for me.

Jack is amazing! Already I can let him take the helm and relax, I sit next to him and feel the movement of the boat but I can take my eyes off for a little while once I’ve looked well ahead to ensure there is nothing we might collide with and then he is very able to steer to a course and keep the wind in the sails. Soon he will be able to do watches but we won’t force that responsibility on him until he is properly ready

You’re off, how wonderful. I’ll never forget the feeling when we did the same. Regarding your Raymarine speed through water transducer, ours was a constant problem that three Raymarine techs couldn’t fix until we found an old guy on the brink of retirement who said the problem wasn’t the transducer so much but the splice in the cable that many people do to save having to run a complete new cable. Ours was spliced and he took the time to check it all and there were small intermittent voltage drops with the slightest movement of the cable even though the soldered joints looked fine. He replaced it with a new transducer (which only come complete with new cable) all the way back to the helm station and there have been very few problems since. But there are two other things to do. One is every few months is to remove the transducer and knock the axle pin out of the paddlewheel, shine it up with some emery cloth and grease both the paddle wheel pin and the whole paddle wheel and yoke with the genuine grease comes with the new transducer (or just use vaseline) and this keeps it free and stops marine growth blocking it. The other is that if it does stop working you can still get a true wind setting by choosing ground wind speed (and direction) on your plotter rather than true wind, as ground wind is derived from the GPS derived course and speed over ground. True wind of course requires a speed through water reading. The Raymarine manual also has a really handy means of calibrating your speed through water motoring at constant rpm on a diamond shaped course to take account of tides and other currents. Works brilliantly. The other thing about Raymarine is their customer support, you can ring them and they actually answer their phone and a real person will help you through the process. Even if their products were absolute rubbish (as many claim), this alone is a big plus for them and is in very marked contrast to their competitors.

Wow what a great episode, one of the best yet. I've watched them all since you started working on Steel Melody and although they've all been interesting, this is what it was all leading up to. It was so relaxing watching you sailing around the beautiful welsh coast, I'm very jealous, though not of all the years of hard work and sacrifices that you've both made. I know that coastline well which makes it all the more interesting. Loved the Welsh, I hadn't realised you were that fluent Andy. Can't wait for the next episode. Fair winds and happy sailing!

Watching this reminded me of my early days sailing in the Severn Estuary. I thought watching tide tables intensely, rocks in the middle of nowhere and every other navigational hazard known to man was entirely normal. Having spent years sailing first the West Coast of the US and then the Med, I now know that the entire British West coast is the toughest sailing area in the world! If you can sail there, you can sail anywhere!
