Bobby’s life,, wow he was so distraught when he learned his sister was really his mom,, and so much more that when on in his life one more thing about his life,, many times when singing he would shake his hands because he would go numb he had a heart condition,, also sometimes in between songs he would go back stage to get oxygen!! I adore Bobby. What a man what a life!!
"He started his career as a songwriter for Connie Francis. He recorded his first million-selling single, "Splish Splash", in 1958. That was followed by "Dream Lover", "Mack the Knife", and "Beyond the Sea", which brought him worldwide fame. In 1962 he won a Golden Globe Award for his first film, Come September, co-starring his first wife, actress Sandra Dee. During the 1960s, he became more politically active and worked on Robert F. Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles at the time of Robert Kennedy's assassination in June 1968. During the same year, he discovered the woman who had raised him was his grandmother, not his mother as he thought, and learned that the woman he thought was his sister was actually his mother. Those events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion.[citation needed] Although he made a successful comeback (in television) in the early 1970s, his health was beginning to fail following bouts of rheumatic fever in childhood. The knowledge of his vulnerability had always spurred him on to use his musical talent while still young. He died at the age of 37 after a heart operation in Los Angeles." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Darin BTW, he was Connie Francis' soul mate, but her father told Darrin to take a hike (and he was in the Mafia) because he feared that if Connie married Darrin, she would give up her singing career.
@@ericcharpentier2145 Yes, but the arrangement (and the English lyrics) were probably more inspired by Benny Goodman's instrumental cover recorded in the late '40s.
Unfortunately, Bobby Darin never made it 105. He died at the age of 37 in 1973. "Dream Lover", "Splish Splash", and "Mack the Knife" are other good songs by him.
The year 1958 would become a banner year for Bobby Darin. With 2 chart topping hits "Splish Splash" and "Beyond the Sea." And in 1959 he will top it off with his monster hit 'Mack the Knife." I hope you are able to react to these songs as well. Great reaction as always.
Bobby was very classy, a great entertainer, & a great impressionist! He did a video with Clyde McPhatter. Mack the Knife is my favorite Bobby Darin song.
You two are so nice! I'm an old woman now, less time ahead than behind. I often forget that there's at least two generations that have never heard the music of my youth. Thank you so much for appreciating it. All the very best, from Sweden.
Bobby Darin had so much style, swagger and coolness - Great back catalogue with songs like;- Mack the Knife, Beyond the Sea, Dream Lover, Things, Splish Splash,
Shawn, I love seeing the expressions on your face. Yes, Mel, Bobby Darin really was class and cool back then. He married Sandra Dee. They were both heartthrobs in the ‘60’s. 🙂
I was a Bobby Darin impersonator and performer in Vegas, i was the ONLY one. Hardly anyone knows who he is and his music is way underrated and underappreciated so THANK YOU!
Love this song. It was featured on an X Files episode, another favorite of mine. Would love some Nancy Wilson (1960's, not the Nancy Wilson from Heart) and some Lena Horne. Thanks guys for all you do!🙏🙏👍👍
He was so smooth! I’m just realizing how perfect Kevin Spacey (his current problems notwithstanding) was playing him. Also, liked Robbie Williams cover of this song for Finding Nemo.
Waldon Robert Cosatto AKA Bobby Darin died in December 1973 at the age of 37…he had developed heart problems as a child after contracting rheumatic fever. He was the ultimate performer, song writer, was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in “Captain Newman MD”. He could write anything, listen to his song “18 Yellow Roses” “Clementine” etc…you can’t go wrong with any of his songs. He died way too soon.
It was said that Bobby would take oxygen offstage during breaks. I was crazy about him (still am ) when I was a girl. Watching the tributes for Bobby on YT has caused me to look at him in a whole new light, a multi talented music professional vs a teenager's crush. My sister die from contracting rheumatic fever. It and polio were the scourges in my day.
He bridges the pop era and rock and roll. He was a tremendous all around entertainer, not just a singer, he could dance a little, and was a good drummer. Bobby Darin,,, yes,, a top drawer entertainer.
A movie was made about his life a few years called "BEYOND the SEA" Kevin Spacey played Bobby and did his own singing, Spacey did a great job playing Darin. Worth watching.
Check out the great Tony Bennett. He and Lady GaGa just had a special last Sunday and it is ON DEMAND. He sounds as great as ever and they are celebrating his 95th Birthday.
I love reactions and your enthusiasm for this and all music. And I think you're a cute couple who enjoys each other and the love you have for one another comes through on your videos. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
Bobby Darin had a bad heart and died before he was 40. He was an outstanding actor in dramatic roles such as Captain Newman MD. He was extremely smart and went to the Bronx High School Of Science. A special entertainer.
My dad named me after Bobby Darin's "Amy" from the movie Gunfight in Abilene. I love Bobby! Mack the Knife, A Simple Song of Freedom, and If I Were a Carpenter are some more of his songs you should check out
Sammy Davis Jr. said that the only person he ever feared having to follow on stage was Bobby. He was not lying about his loving to perform for his audience. Sadly he died of a bad heart in his late 30’s.
My granddaughter (13 yrs old) is really into vinyl records. I bought her some new and used records for Christmas. I also bought her some single 45 rpm records and one is If I Were a Carpenter by Bobby Darin. I am looking forward to listening with them with her and talk about the history of the music 🎶.
Even though this was a couple decades before my time (released the year I was born), in the 80's this song was special to me. On patrol on a sub in the Atlantic, listening to it would make me think of my wonderful, beautiful wife who'd be waiting for me to come back from patrol. "We'll meet, beyond the shore, we'll kiss just as before". Would look forward to the return and seeing her again. And that first long kiss after 3 months is still a fond memory that puts a smile on my face 40 years later.
Bobby was a massive talent, and could really sing. He was superb with Sinatra style swing, and great with pop like Splish Splash. He was also a fair actor and made three magical movies with his wife Sandra Dee which are still favourites of mine. 'Come September' with Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida is simply a brilliant film. He tragically had a congenital heart defect which cost him his life in his early thirties. Actually, this number was a composition by a French vocalist, Charles Trenet, and originally called La Mer (The Sea), and it was the flip side of 'Mack The Knife'.
Shawn and Mel, I like that picture of Elvis in the background. Bobby Darin was one of the greats. A smooth singer and great performer. He knew how to entertain. He had class. This is from a bygone Era. They don't make music like this any more. Great song, my favorite Bobby Darin song Your reaction ius fun to watch.. I hope you all enjoyed a Happy Thanksgiving.
Love Bobby - My fav from the day & still on my playlist today & I am 73!!!!check out his Mack The Knife - only Bobby can make a song about a hit man/serial killer make ya snap your fingers & sing along!!!!
Bobby Darin was so very talented and had/has so many great hits (and he wasn't bad to look at, either, I might add). The video you chose to react to was a good one. I love how he interacted with the audience. However, it was not the full song.I urge you to listen to the studio version in your leisure time. I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised. 😊
An iconic hit that has been added to the American Song book and is culturally significant. It has been featured in motion pictures and TV shows. Most recently, this particular version by Darin was featured as they rolled the credits in the animated hit movie, "Nemo."
This was a cover of the song by Charles Trenet "La Mer". Bobby version however was far more bombastic as was his other great cover, "Mack The Knife", taken from the Brecht play "Three Penny Opera". Bobby always admired Frank Sinatra and these two songs gave him an opportunity to sound like Frank. Give "Mack" a listen as well. It is funny to see all the non people of color clap on the upbeat though.
Gotta check out his signature hit, "Mack the Knife." Also, shortly before he died, he did an amazing live performance of "If I Were A Carpenter." Look for it on RU-vid (he's wearing a light blue dress shirt).
Mack The Knife is probably Bobby's most famous record. His live version of that song on The Ed Sullivan Show is the absolute BEST version of all!!! My favorite song by Bobby is Artificial Flowers, with the swingiest arrangement you ever heard, despite the very sad story in the lyrics. He started out as a rock-n-roll singer (Splish Splash & Dream Lover, both of which he wrote), but beginning with Mack The Knife, he became one of the greatest vocalists of all time!!
Bobby Darin is another great talent that died too young, only 37 when he died of heart failure in 1973. He made so many great songs and was the King of Cool.
I didn't like this kind of thing when I was young but now that I'm older I find myself really digging the old crooners. Of course it's sandwiched in between my AC/DC and Screeching Weasel. I love your reactions and your willingness to experience music that's not familiar to you. Thanks for starting my day with this. 🦃
