Folklore: The rest of the world was in black and white Evermore: But we were in screaming color (also, champagne problems is like the lovechild of New Year's Day and Back to December. And in case you were still wondering, the song is about Taylor refusing a guy's proposal, and he's heartbroken and stunned going home)
Yes. I was going to comment this (I think this came from another reaction video's comments hahha). A conspiracy theory that I have is that these two lyrics were easter eggs in the out of the woods 1989 song. tying into this album (the unreleased last deluxe album track is "it's time to go"). I think this will symbolize her going back out of the woods, and into another genre (i hope back to country)
I think it's about Scott (like in folklore). No matter how well she did (fancy shit) it didn't matter except how he could use it to build other worlds (other artists'). He just tolerated her once she left country (7 years). She didn't feel like he celebrated her success. He felt like she took too much of his time, assumed she was fine. She watched how he behaved, threatened to leave, "believe me I could do it".
Many are speculating that it could be about Diane and Charles. She said she had been watching movies, series and reading and The Crown is very on right now 🤔🤓
She said this album was a sister to folklore. I think how similarly track 13 was about a grandparent on both albums, track 5 is about Scott. Then later "happiness" also since it was written a week prior to evermore's release...her saying that they hurt each other and her "new" self will probably forgive him. They had 7 good years before she started branching out of country and that's when their relationship started collapsing.
I just re-listened to the whole album (for the 100th time) after reading a quote that popped on my twitter feed and I also think it is a continuation to My Tears Ricochet. She gave Scott and the label everything she had; was the biggest revenue stream, kept getting more involved and started collaborating with others who brought different phases to her career at that point and he still wasn’t content and wanted her to stay in the country lane. Maybe he thought that 1989 would be a one-off success for her and she needed to be “a good girl (obedient wife)” and do as she was told and because she didn’t he then started to resent her. I think this is how she was feeling when she was contemplating leaving the label and “losing the weight” of him and his negativity in her life. After re-reading an article about her upcoming interview with Apple Music tomorrow and how she started to feel that her diaristic style of writing was starting to be bad for her mental health, makes you wonder if she had wanted to start doing what Folklore and Evermore allowed her to do, which was continue to improve her lyricism but maintaining her privacy and only sharing what she wanted to. I’m crying all over listening to the album too. I need a swiftie friend who fan girls with me 😭😭😭😂
@rr I said I THINK not I KNOW it is It was what came to mind when she says ‘my love should be. Celebrated but you tolerate it’ Plus it track 5, which is usually a personal song
@rr I said I THINK not I KNOW Plus it’s track 5,normally her personal songs ‘My love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it, she made an effort on their 1 year anniversary, but he didnt
She mentioned in an interview that it is about a book she read. It's a book from Daphne du Maurier named 'Rebecca'. It's about an older man who marries a younger girl who is always comparing herself to her husband's 1st deceased wife Rebecca. She convinces herself that he loved everything about his 1st wife and she is just a huge disappointment to him because she is nothing like her. Turns out he killed his 1st wife and sunk her boat to hide her body. 'Tolerate it' is a great way to describe how he acts towards her throughout the book. She is just such an amazing songwriter!! Completely sums up the book but, also SO MANY can relate to this kind of treatment!
What is most beautiful about the song Marjorie is that she used recordings of Marjorie singing (she was opera singer) on the final chorus and outro thus lists her in the credits as background vocals. How wonderful to get to share a song with her grandmother, so it will last forever, who died before she was able to see Taylor get a record deal and become what she has become.
Happiness is actually about Scott and the label situation. It’s just wrapped up in a divorce story. Her and Joe are okay! If you look closely at the lyrics a lot of them refer back to My Tears Ricochet.
Katie, I know it's hard to hear, but give Marjorie one more go, but this time with the video so you can see her grandma. It's BEAUTIFUL (Also, her grandma is the back vocals you will hear. She was an opera singer so listen for that.) As always I love your reaction. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on this once you have time to let it settle and listen to it a couple more times. You always have the best takes! Last thing, Joe played the piano in Evermore ;-) My favorites are probably 'tis the damn season, no body, no crime, margorie, evermore and closure (okay all of them, all of them are my favorite :-))
Yes, I second this. So hard to hear, but to watch the video and see the resemblance between her and Taylor is crazy. And yes, her vocals in the background, she sounds just like snow white!
Thank you!!!🤗 ugh, yes. It is SO beautiful!! Even though it’s sad, I do love it!! The way they put her vocals on the track...like, Taylor really outdid herself there 😩🥺 I LOVE that Joe has played such a role in the creation of these two masterpieces! I’ll def be doing an update 🤗🤗🤗
Coney Island was hit by a hurricane. My interpretation is the relationship before it and then it ending, finding out the news and thinking of the other person and then going back to remember old memories.
I like you're reaction and especially the interpretation of the songs (considering it's the first time you are listening to the song). You are very perceptive. However, you forget just like with folklore, most of these songs are fictional and just story telling so you can relax. Things between Taylor and Joe are great. The sad and break-up like songs such as Coney Island, Tolerate it and Happiness in no way reflect Joe's and Taylor's relationship.
Coney Island Bridge is about reflecting on past relationships, the bridge. Standing in the hallways, birthday cake- Jake, Painted my blue skies grey- John Mayer, The accident is Harry, the podium is most likely Calvin Harris. Joe and Her are fine!
Tolerate It isn’t about Joe. If you listen closely to the lyrics, it’s about someone who’s in a relationship with someone who is just tolerating them instead of fully loving them. They tolerate them until they find someone else. “I know my love should be celebrated but you tolerate it” - this lyric really demonstrates the meaning of the song. As with Folklore, not all the songs are about her personal life. This track 5 song is so heartbreaking because if you’ve been in that kind of relationship, you can definitely see what she’s doing with the lyrics. She’s giving him everything to try to get him to notice her love and her too. But instead he just tolerates everything almost like she’s an inconvenience. She gives him a hero’s welcome, makes the fanciest dinner, she uses every colour to paint him in the best light to others (clearly trying to ignore what’s happening in front of others). He’s even being indiscreet, but she takes all his actions because she loves him even though he doesn’t love her and probably never will. Then at the end of the song we hear how she’s breaking free from him and knows he won’t be expecting it. She’s leaving to be free and find someone who truly loves and appreciates her. For me, this is one of the most heartbreaking track 5 songs. I absolutely love all your reactions. Can’t wait to see you react to album 10 when it comes out! So glad I’m subscribed to you
Thank you, doll!!!🥰💕 and that was a great breakdown of that song!!!! It was hard to grasp on the initial listen, but you’re so right about HOW devastating it really is!!!
I am still waiting on one reaction video that gets Champagne Problems. SO he had his mother's ring in his pocket ready to propose, but she left him. He goes back home and his family is there ready to celebrate and congratulate him, he had a speech ready and everything, but he was dumped instead. She couldn't give a reason why she said no, but in the end, she's telling him that he'll find the right one eventually and forget her.
Can we talk about the verse in Coney Island that references a bunch of her exes tho? Were you standing in the hallway With a big cake, happy birthday = Jake Gyllenhaal skipping out on her birthday party Did I paint your bluest skies the darkest grey = John Mayer. references "You paint me a blue sky then go back and turn it to rain" from Dear John A universe away And when I got into the accident The sight that flashed before me was your face = You got the Harry Styles out of this one But when I walked up to the podium I think that I forgot to say your name = Calvin Harris not thanking her at the awards show
Also, if you didn’t know Coney Island was hit by a hurricane so I see this as a couple sharing memories at Coney Island before the hurricane and then breaking up and the remembering what once was (the relationship/good times at Coney Island)
Loved your reaction as always! Initial top 5 in no particular order are no body no crime, tolerate it, ivy, long story short, and willow. Tolerate it OBLITERATES me in both the ways of the unrequited love story “I Sit and watch you reading” like noticing everything someone you love does because you’re so enamored with them. Every eyebrow raise, expression. But they don’t do that for you. Because you love them more than they love you. And then the imagery of “wait by the door like I’m just a kid, use my best colors for your portrait” thinking of a little kid coloring all day for their parent, using their best colors, drawing THEM, like working so hard on something they’re proud of for the parent to just go “yeah that’s great honey” and set it aside. And the next day they might find it in the trash. I cannot handle that song. I’ve full on sobbed every time I’ve listened. In LOVE with this album!!!
Most if these songs are just fictional! They're fine...joe even worked on Evermore with her. These are just stories for the most part. Not actually autobiographical 😌
First of all you are completely selling me on the folklore merch you are repping. Furthermore, this was so good. I just filmed my reaction to evermore and this came up on my recommended feed... You were so thoughtful.🥰
YESSSS! 🥺 Every time I listen to tolerate it I always imagine the movie titled "the crown" which is princess diana and prince charles love story it really fit in that movie swear 🥺🥺🥺
