Just think I was 3 years old when this movie was made I was born in 1934. Maybe that's why I like these movies so much I don't know but I like everything about the 1930s and 40s1940 I was in the kindergarten period I live in Southern California I'll be 90 in a few months May2024. I like the movie thank you for the video.
@dianalee8967 Seems everyone is "nostalgic" for times even before they were alive considering what life is now. I was born in '68 and have lost interest in most everything after 2000 or so. Especially "music".
I never forget Barbara Stanwyck in her role in The Thornbirds when she cries out to the priest that she still feels young inside....that was outstanding.
people get old, Goethe was turned down by a woman when he was old. He had been quite a ladies' man when he was young, but he was too old for a young woman and he also felt depressed for some days afterward. But what can one do, no one lives forever. Even Sinatra got old and lost his appeal. He cancelled a tour of Europe because so few people cane to see him sing.
Agreed! Just think, I was a 20 something when I saw the speech on the miniseries and retired when I saw it today on You Tube. It hit me just the same, except today I know it to be universally true.
I agree, outstanding and it does happen in real life...women falling in LOVE with PRIESTS...I have seen it happen...Handsome priests are a mystery. Priests are fall in love with women in their Parishes...I think for some it is loneliness.
This is a fabulous woman who overcame odds most of us would never dream of and became a great actress, philanthropist, a woman with great humility and even wisdom... orphaned at 2 years old to one of the most famous women in show business and otherwise. I have a great regard for the force of her great spirit and her ability to endure so much! And, oh how could she act! She is truly one of the greats!!!!!
We never had the money of these folk....everyone wore a suit and tie and carried a hat.....I was much too poor for that stuff....but interesting to see how City People lived.
What a great old gem! Always loved Barbara Stanwyck! First knew her from THE BIG VALLEY, as a kid watching re-runs. I love seeing her in her early movie career. She was a class act at every stage of that long illustrious career.
One of my favorite actors of all time Robert Taylor, at the level of John Wayne, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Alan Ladd, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Charlton Heston, James Cagney
I absolutely LOVE Barbara Stanwyck movies. I can't think of anyof her movies that I didn't like. She was a great actor !! I saw some comments saying she didn't sing well. I liked her singing . She wasn't best known for her singing . but she could hold her. In the movie "Lady of Burlesque" she was great , her energy, presence, and beauty made the movie. When she sang "Play It On The G-String" she blew everyone away then and when I see now I still love it! I'm sure I speak for many others. LOVE HER!!! :)
What about her singing in the nightclub in "Ball of Fire"? The drum beat boogie song? Gene Krupa playing the drums with 2 match sticks on the matchbox holder? Fab u lous..........
Waddya Tawkin Hi!! BAll of FIRE!!!... That is one of my favorite movies, top 10 favorite movie scenes..when shes doing that an d Gary... Just dosent know what to do with her... I totally agree, she was FAB U LOUS!!
i agree with the other comments. beautiful woman then, loved seeing these people at their beginning of their career. thank you. great stories, very enjoyable.
Stanwyck, Davis, Crawford, Tierney, Lansbury...these stars were in their "retiring days" by the time I was introduced to them. Big Valley, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, Baby Jane Murder she Wrote. So after TV gets a little independence (UHF channels) I got to see these actresses in their real glory...Love em all.
Please. nothing "lovely" unless they were acting. Barb, looked at no man after Taylor. His acting was stiff and uncomfortable. Ursula Andess, dumped him pronto.
This is My Affair (1937) Barbara Stanwyck (Ruby Catherine Stevens), Robert Taylor,& a cameo by John Carradine. I'm glad I pushed myself to the last 3rd of this movie, that is when I became glued. Ruby was a natural!
Eliezer Pennywhistler I never thought she was pretty. She married Robert Taylor but I don't know if it was before or after this picture. They later divorced. He remarried; she never did
She loved Taylor very much. She had far more talent than he did. She has been my favorite for 50 years. No, he had an affair with Ursula Andress, and that is why she left him. He became an alcoholic, and was living in Camarllo State hospital, in So. Calif for de tox. He was there for a long time. I live close to the place.
Yes, but it didn't last. Taylor wanted the big Swedish woman. Forget her name. Barbara never married again. Taylor was an alcoholic, and stayed at Camarillo State Hospital to detox. I worked there for a short time.
Patrick3183 LOL Well, yes he was a "pretty boy" and Barb was a tough cookie. Could that be why he was an alcoholic? I never knew, other than he was very unhappy at the hospital. He spoke to nobody.
thx for this, my favorite actor, is ms. stanwick, love the movie but something didn't feel right for the time period it was in and i figured out that during that time period there was certain social behavior among the classes, like "bust a gut" loud laughter at social gatherings was reserved for the lower class in the pubs not at party with the type of ppl. that would attend engagements with the President. and little things like the hand buzzer wasn't invented then , the clothes the 36:50 part the guys in the room with guns had hats on from the present day. the wardrobes were completely different back in those days, and the most significant thing is that is was written using the words and actions for the current day not the time period of the movie. this must be some of the reasons the critics were unimpressed. but i love it anyway.
some of you talk about her singing, not bad to me, i really think it was sweet...think she can do no wrong, when it comes to her craft n a fan. THX FOR THE POST
The most intimate details of the executive branch possibly compromised.... I've exhausted all the means of the law...how creepily prescient of the NSA....
Hi Everyone that post a comment an those wishing to but just can't find the words to express your feelings about this picture. This picture had a little of everything, crime, drama, comedy, thrills, vaudeville even dead presidents. "Jolly good show" as president Roosevelt would say. Sadly enough he said in this picture his famous words "SPEAK SOFTLY AND CARRY A BIG STICK." Today his word's would be more technical with today's technology. "SPEAK LOUDLY AND USE THE INTERNET." Don't you agree? ;-) ★★★
Yes.Almost all the early films are wonderful. My guess is that the studio system, along with the profit move, keeps more or less high standards to fill the theaters. If the motion picture did not make money, there was hardy a second chance. They had serious arguments, people got fired if they refused, or didn't make money for the studio...Addendum: OH, the churches were open for a lot of innocents. Outwardly, most people had high morals, or were afraid what the neighbors would say if they got caught. But, fear of public exposure, fear of the "after-life" made most people polite, or courteous in public, anyway. Getting in fights and getting drunk was a manly sport. Hypocrisy is nothing new.
Yeahhhhhhh! She seems to be a true contralto. She seems to have a good ear. Some vocal training and she might have become quite a good singer. But then we would have missed out on her film career!
So, at 1:08:39 They just open the back door to the bank after hours and walk right in? Even if they had a key the bank alarm should be set for after bank hours.
Entertaining. The bank robbery sequence was laughable by today's standards of authenticity. The actors who played McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt looked very much like the actual presidents.
Well, if you like soap operas, that was fair to middlin'. I could do without Taylor as he is not much of an actor altho' not half bad in this. Stanwyck however could do what no other grand dame of that era could do: every single genre. Could read a telephone book (remember those) and make it sound interesting.
and what a real woman's beauty should look like...not like these scaggy, artificial, made up trash today...no wonder woman are treated so poorly nowadays...they are not the way woman was meant to be and are certainly not ladies!
In the years between the wars there was a trend to play/experiment with sexuality - especially in open minded artistic circles. I assume those "experiments" are the basis of many of the rumors. And then of course there are always some people who try to make money (or propaganda) by spreading scandalous reports.
