Hey Robert. Thanks for your video, very straight-forward. This year, I started playing the saxophone and I didn't notice, but I was holding the weight of the horn with my right thumb... I suffered a lot of pain for weeks. Thanks for your review, I will try it! I must say I really like your videos, thanks for sharing your knowledge

You invented a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. If you have thumb pain, adjust your strap to take the load off your thumb. The thumb hook doesn't restrict right-hand movement at all. You do have the influencer marketing piece down through.

I just put one on my horn. It is very, very comfortable. I never thought of plying without resting the whole horn on my thumb before. It sounds like a joke, but i really was enlightened after playing my horn with this thumb pad.

I *still* play without a thumb hook ever since you told me you took yours off! Would be interesting to experiment with the ergonomic benefits of the Rulon though. I've never really thought about the possibility of being able to position my right thumb in that many places! Great video Dr. Young.

I just purchased thanks! Question: What do you recommend as far as what horn I should stick with for practice and playing, I have 3 Alto's 1. student model, 2. Selmer Super Action 80 S II, 3. Yanagisawa AWO20. The reason I got the student Model is I wanted something I could lug around and bring to work and play on my break at the time I used to commute 200 miles a day for 9 years, train, and walk 2 miles through Oakland Ca, so I didn't want to worry about if something happened. The Selmer I've had since 1995. and was primary. The Yanagisawa AWO20, was a new purchase I had for a few years but rarely taken out the case for fear of scratches. So I remain playing my student model, not playing out for some time. Your thoughts?

Hello, that is quite the collection! The Selmer and Yanagisawa horns are both beautiful instruments. Of course you want to make sure they stay safe. If you were just playing in your home or on gigs, I would say any of those two instruments would be great.

@@robertyoungsax thanks what I was getting at is you don’t believe I’m suffering from not playing my pro horns, but choosing student model for practice? By the way to check out your classes , that’s on your website correct?

I didn't even see these at the Navy Band - I'll have to look for them next year. (I did get Brennan Lagan's Wrist Saver for my soprano, which has been great - no more pain in my forearm when I play soprano.) Do you use this rest on all your horns? I'll close by saying again how absolutely outstanding your performance at that Symposium was. Hope you'll be back!

I hear great things about the Lagan saver. This is has been a good solution for me. I do use this on all of my horns!

👍🎷Put me on the list of those who would absolutely recommend the Rulon saxophone thumb rest! I am a retired music educator and a performing saxophonist for over six decades. My first concern was “Do I NEED the original thumb hook?” The answer is NO! You can balance your instrument perfectly well with just a flat surface under your right thumb. This includes standing or seated, with the sax to the side or between the knees, as I play MY alto. All the hook really contributes is hand tension and discomfort! (I already have arthritis affecting both thumbs, so the Rulon really helps me). I find that using the Rulon rest allows more flexibility and mobility of my fingers when negotiating the pinky keys and the side (alternate) F# and high F# keys. I chose the black carbon fiber version and I’m glad I did because the light crosshatch texture provides just the right amount of stability and comfort. A fine investment for any level of sax player! 👍👍 Side note…removing the thumb hook places the ENTIRE load of the sax on your neck strap (where it belongs). I successfully use the JazzLab neck strap which transfers ALL the weight to the shoulders rather than the neck…the perfect setup!😊
