Nice to see a young lad enthusiastic and take pride in his work. A rare commodity it seems with this young generation coming though. They just don't want to get their hands dirty. So thumbs up to this fella

I’ve been a flat roofer for over 20 years and for me these single ply roofs are fine for domestic use but they just are not robust enough to be used in the commercial sector. Felt and Hotmelt really are the top of the range products to use but as with anything if the installer takes pride in what they do (which this lad seems to be doing) you will always be left with a good job.

i work on commercial plant equipment, i've been to a few sites now where i've been told i can't even walk on the roof to work on air handlers in case i damage the membrane. i'm no roofer but to me it seems like the fibreglass stuff is the most durable
@storegga
@storegga 7 месяцев назад
@@cliveramsbotty6077 that is true , but I work for timber manufacturing and can't say fibreglass handle any movement from a deck especially in harsher climate variants like the UK. up here in Scotland and I can't really vouch for GRP fibreglass after getting many quotes for new flat roof, a lot of grp kits and have a go heros with GRP it would seem based on the varied quote prices, dearer quotes were the felt and hotmelt and single ply. The temp differentials and snow loads have caused grp fibreglass to crack. Timber wants to move and the fibreglass doesn't. We've decided to go membrane simply because it's more sympathetic and less likely to fail in such way but more likely to fail to foot traffic etc. each to their own I suppose!

Theres single ply roofs here in ireland for 30+years covering thousands of m². They'll begin to fail at this age, but so will others

Hey Robin.....another great vid! I've always been a fan/user of the classic '3 layer, 'torch-on-felt' system - have installed many on dormers and extensions in the past and up to present.....- I think they are hard to beat, if done properly, but this is a very convincing video to show a better system.....plus your guy there certainly knows what he'on! - like all us good trades people - the best folk are always carpenters/joiners first and foremost......it's where everything else comes from!!!! 😀👌👍

the deck is going to be interesting regarding the wear it may cause this product and how you minimalize that , im sure robin has some good ideas for that to help the rest of us all out if we ever did something like this ourselves or on our homes
@owenoneill5955
@owenoneill5955 7 месяцев назад
The wear on the single ply will be will be governed by the dimensions and number of load bearing pads, no doubt Robin will adopt a ''belt and braces'' approach to their number and size. I worked on supermarket and petrol station consruction projects all over the UK for decades. Trocal was the go to single ply on the majority of those, aircon units and worker access walkways are all over the roofs and I don't remember there being any problems. Flat roofs were always a ball ache until the introduction of single ply systems.

Hi Robin, generally we use Resitrix on the majority of flat roofs we do. I imagine you'll be familiar with that system. It's a very similar system in the sense that you prime, peel, stick and weld the membrain in pretty much the same way. I'm interested to know your thoughts on how the products compare. I think the resitrix is a really good system and Tony Ellard uses it alot on his projects but we did have one client say it looked a bit industrious it wasn't a major issue but just wondered if you'd had any experience and you thoughts. Anyway have a great weekend 👍🏼

Lovely work, I’d be interested to see how you fix a balustrade to it and how you keep it sealed. Also the difference in the weathered thermowood cladding on the dorma compared to the new cladding, is mental in a short amount of time.

Don't know anything about putting on roofs, but that looks like a much better material than the tar-based stuff that we have on our house. Easier to repair as well. But can this hold something like solar panels or is it easily dented due to weight?

Solar is fine with the correct support system

Single ply roofs are great, they bring in lots of money from having to patch them over and over 🙄 Or you could go the torch on route with a 4mm plain finish? You can drop one of them roof lights on that stuff and it won't go through.

Whats the advantage of this over an EPDM roof. Cant see me using this on my loft conversion as EPDM much simpler.
@ukconstruction
@ukconstruction 7 месяцев назад
EDPM is a great product that come in many guises, from thickness and composition, so like all products there is always entry level and high end, it is super popular for single sheet applications such as the average garden room or average loft dormer where you can bond down a single sheet and trap the edges with a trim section with no joins and indeed I know many trade mates that do this, its just a matter of specification or choice, we tend to get involved in roofs that are large that has multiple fall directions lantern light up stands, parapets and roof and wall abutments that are raking and vertical, so we only use Evalon by Alwitra that is installed by approved contractors such as Tommy and the client will receive a bonded guarantee, summing up EDPM can also be in strips and bonded but..... it needs care like any other system when being installed and sometimes over large areas EDPM has been known to shrink and pull the seams
@plummetplum
@plummetplum 7 месяцев назад
@ukconstruction Thanks, Robin. So makes sense for more involved installations. Mine is an L shaped loft, the only complication wouid be the step where the two dormers join. There's actually hardly any step which potentially could make it tricker. I don't suppose you could recommend me a decent EPDM supplier? Currently looking at rubber4roofs. Thx

Why this product instead of liquid rubber or fibreglass?
@ukconstruction

It's my preferred material as it comes with a proper bonded manufacturers warranty and can only be fitted by properly trained and approved roofers, there are some good products if used correctly such as Fibreglass or liquid but in the wrong hands things can go badly wrong!!

Flat roofs belong in dry countries like Morocco. They have no place in a wet country like the UK.

It's all about the correct building process, I have 300m2 of flat roof at home and never had a problem, nearly every commercial building or tower block also has flat roofs, the problems arise from crappy products and poor building
@HeathenGeek
@HeathenGeek 7 месяцев назад
incorrect. Flat roofs work well when the person doing them has the right experience and training. Industry / government has reduced what used to be a trade and a craft - honed over many years - to nothing more than a service they think anyone with a few months of 'training' can provide.
