The 1st Edition Base Set is the most iconic and most universally sought after set in the Pokemon Trading Card Game. With it's undeniable historical significance and it's limited production and distribution, these cards are one of the most obvious investment vehicles for many collectors in the hobby. As such, this is my most valuable Pokemon set, including doubles of all three starters: Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur. I was fortunate enough to start collecting over twenty years ago, before upgrading to PSA Mint 9 graded copies just over 10 years ago.
Since then, prices have increased by significant margins of over 2000% . . . sometimes more. With the Pokemon market experiencing unprecedented volatility right now, it's difficult to say what will happen with Base set in the future. Either way, I have enjoyed collecting these cards and reliving the childhood experience of the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
