the underrated thing on this one is the lyrics. Everyone knows about his voice and all that but the clever turns in the lyrics really take it up a few notches - "trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created" for example is GOLD.

@@djdoc06 One thing I love about this song is that it's sympathetic to her point of view, too, like she's feeling awkward but still being polite. And it doesn't blame her for his fixation; it just acknowledges that it's a thing, and it hurts him, and it's no picnic for her either. Really fantastic songwriting!

My Doobie Brothers story. I was in high school (1974) when the DB hit big on the radio. Many stoned rides cranking Black Water on the car FM.. Fast forward almost 30 years and I work for a custom Audio/Video installation company. Previous clients include Gregg Allman (Allman Bros Band), Francis Ford Coppola (film director). So one morning I drive to North Novato (marin county), up to a gated house. It's Tom Johnston's house. We are installing a whole house system. So I'm walking around with tom and his wife, marking speaker locations, wall controls, flat screen placements, etc. I spent many days on site with him. You realize he is just another human, walking his path, and sometimes you get lucky in life and get to meet your rock star legends from your past. Outside, your cool as a cucumber, in charge with your skill sets, but inside your all "Holy cr ap, its the guy from the Doobie Brothers!". Great memories. Peace

The lyrics are worth a read. It's a deep message. He came from somewhere back in her long ago The sentimental fool don't see Trying hard to recreate what had yet to be created Once in her life, she musters a smile for his nostalgic tale Never coming near what he wanted to say Only to realize it never really was She had a place in his life He never made her think twice As he rises to her apology Anybody else would surely know He's watching her go But a fool believes he sees The wise man has the power to reason away What seems to be Is always better than nothing And nothing at all keeps sending him Somewhere back in her long ago Where he can still believe there's a place in her life Someday, somewhere, she will return She had a place in his life He never made her think twice As he rises to her apology Anybody else would surely know He's watching her go But a fool believes he sees The wise man has the power to reason away What seems to be (if love can come and love can go, then why can't love return once more?) Is always better than nothing (Who got the power?) There's nothing at all (oh, now) But a fool believes he sees (I believe she's never gone away) The wise man has the power To reason away (to reason away) What seems to be (oh, if love can come and love can go, oh, mama) Is always better than nothing (better than nothing) And nothing at all (oh, I believe)

When this gem of a song was released I was in the 4th grade and had it on a 45 rpm which I wore out from playing it over and over again yes it’s the kind of song you want to repeat. 🙏🏽✌🏽❤️

I can’t wait to see all these guys in June. I have had my tickets since 2020. Damn Covid ruined their 50th anniversary for these guys which was back in 2020 oh well!

You nailed it! This was popular in the spring of 1979, last year of the disco era, and my senior year in h.s. Love the Doobies, but Michael McDonald really adds another whole level to their music.

This song is frequently my earworm. Love Michael & the Doobies! Heard them first in 1972 on an amazing stereo from a girl in my apartment complex. Also introduced me to Joni Mitchell. Friends for life! 🎶💙🎶💙🎶💙

Michael McDonald is amazing. He did a few songs with Steely Dan also. Rock on all.

That’s why they say “love is blind“. We’ve all seen someone go through this, and most of us have went through it ourselves. Great tune! That’s why they say we always want what we can’t have. Truly one of the great mysteries of life🤷🏼‍♂️😎

At the time, guitarist/vocalist Tom Johnston was experiencing some health issues and Michael McDonald with his smooth voice was able to step in and a truly unique sound to the band's music.
