I plan on moving to Manzanillo because it's beautiful, smallish and it's not a tourist trap. It has at least one of everything. There are no timeshare hustlers harassing you there or others that pretend to know you because of your all inclusive wrist band and want to sell you something. The only other place I'd consider is Campeche because it reminds me of the Italian Adriatic coast with few people and splendid empty beaches. Basically, I don't care for expats and their communities and have had way better times hanging with the locals. Nice video you posted with generally honest opinions. Much appreciated.

Well done, Alex. Rarely do people ever mention the "downsides" of living in a place in Mexico. Some people are not affected by anything and when they talk about where they live, are not completely honest with others about real downsides to their chosen city. This video is real and is important for people considering moving to Mexico. The younger a person is, the less impact many "problems" will impact them. However, many moving to Mexico are much older and many retired, so they will be affected by these "downsides".

I am so happy that this video shows the downsides of living in MX. I have struggled so much in the 7 yrs. that I have lived in MX. One thing that really brought me down, was mental health is regarded as a bad thing. One Dr. put it like this, one Is considered EVIL and don’t want to have anything to do with a person , like myself suffering from depression, anxiety and especially alcoholism.

It would be great if someone barring me would acknowledge Northern cities....Durango, Torreón, Ciudad Obregón, Culiacán, Chihuahua, Parral, San Carlos, Guaymas, Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí...by only focusing on the places mentioned in this video you're literally missing more than half the country. Food, history, culture, people... all far superior in my book. I'd seriously recommend but it's almost as if there's this bizarre belief in the minds of many that nothing exists north of Guanajuato. I'd be happy to give any advice on these cities and it would be great for people to consider other options.

David, how is the real climate year round in those cities? Many coming to Mexico think that the year round climate in those cities, though they may be beautiful and historical, are not near the "perfect climate" that places in the Center of Mexico are. What say you about that?

@@phildodd5532 Northern states can be stifling, but I've found your body adjusts. Locals usually say to stay inside between 12-4 but as someone who works online I was working then anyway. As long as you drink electrolyte drinks and stay in the shade, you're fine. I've traipsed up hills and mountains and out into the desert in 42c and been fine. For me, the minor inconvenience of heat is worth it considering the Northern food!

I’ve lived in Mexico City almost a year now (never did I imagine…) and another consideration is getting around: if you plan on having a car parking (next to impossible in some areas) and gridlock have to be considered. Further, a large portion of the #1 subway is shut for at least 8 months for upgrades. There are more people crammed in just the city than there are my previous state of residence (Wisconsin). Even given that, I live a charmed life here

So glad to find someone who takes an honest look at living in Mexico! I cringe at the sanitized videos (yes, I use that term a lot) showing places as if you would live like a tourist every day of the rest of your life. Once you sell your home and relocate here, you have to "live" here. I see people leave after about three years from shear burnout of constant cultural friction. There are the hardy ones of course, but it takes a certain type of person to thrive in Mexico.

Thanks for having the input of other people living in other cities in Mexico .Many years ago I was a student in Mexico city and lived there for 4.5 months. It was a big ,noisy and crowded city. I was 22 and had a great time .I did travel to other cities and liked them. Another trip I took a bus from Tijunana to La Paz ,then ferry to Mazatlan.

Loved this video! I live in Playa del Carmen and love most things about life here 🏖️ It wouldn't be the right place for people who want to be totally immersed in Spanish (so many toursits/foreigners!), no colonial architecture, and is more expensive than other cities. That said, love walking everywhere, laidback beach vibes and being close to so many amazing outdoor attractions!

Fantastic video!! A lot of preparation happened here. I’m still drawn to queretaro. I’m not sure why I never considered air quality. I mean, it makes sense being it’s a city. The dryness, I’m not sure if I would like it or not. I’ve lived in Florida most of my life, so humidity is like an annoying relative, and summer thunderstorm sinus headaches are real. I guess I would be trading one sinus condition for another. Lol.

I enjoyed extensive travel throughout Mexico. I enjoyed many areas and try to visit out of the way places, too. I sort of prefer places with an expat population in Mexico, because there's a support system for the expats and they are a respected part of the community and it's nice to have some friends that are fluent in your native language, too.

Thanks for a great video. Its a wonderful reminder that no city will be perfect. I have been in my current favorite city for three years. I love it, and I watch as newcomers struggle with the negatives you listed. Everybody should watch this video before moving to Mexico. I really liked listening to so many points of view. It's really so important to create a nuanced appreciation for the variety of potential places to live in Mexico. This video was a great step in that direction. I loved that you polled people to be honest about the downsides of each city. Personally, I am very connected to Oaxaca and this video confirmed that there would be very few places that could vie for the lifestyle I love there.

@@rotraudsieh9475 When I made this comment we were living in the Diamante area of Acapulco which was a beautiful, clean, safe area on the beach (not far from the Princess Hotel) but we just moved to San Miguel de Allende and LOVE it here! We moved because very few people in Acapulco spoke english and we wanted to meet more expats and english speakers. Literally the only bad thing here is the cobblestone streets everywhere - where you can twist your ankle, but there are neighbourhoods close to town that have paved or slated stone roads that are safer to walk on. I think San Miguel de Allende is brilliant.

We love your videos! We are super torn between moving to Queretaro and La Paz. We are airline folks I am a pilot my wife is a flight attendant. It really depends where get based on what we close but my quick question is Queretaro a cheaper cost of living in your option overall than La Paz? We have spent time in both and love both. I love QRO and I love La Paz. My wife’s top choice is La Paz for the smaller population and beaches. Mine is QRO for the weather and it’s more centered for us commuting we have tons of options. Would love to hear any advice you have between the two. Thanks for the amazing videos. We watch you regularly.

I would agree about PTO Vallarta. I live here currently because I'm a performer at a local Cabaret theater and have opportunities because it is full of foreign tourists. But because it's full of tourists, the prices for everything is higher, and you are always surrounded by tourists who come here to party hard. So you could say, I'm part of the problem 😔 It's somewhat uncomfortable and sad being part of the problem of a city gentrifying so fast since the the Pandemic, local ppl can't live here anymore because the prices are to high. And the city doesn't have the infrastructure to support the sudden influx. In high season it doesn't feel like a Mexican fishing village anymore, and local businesses and Government caters to the tourists. Anyway I'm grateful for my opportunities here, but wouldn't want to live here forever.

Noise, air pollution are also problems-in-the-making for completely healthy people, over the years living in environments with these problems (CDMX, Puebla, etc.). Pulmonary and circulatory, cardiovascular issues much likelier. Many studies on it, e.g., street noise causing arrhytmias, etc. Need to however move more, and not having convenient car transport can be a positive to sit less and move more, and see it positively :)

Thanks for the great video. As a family with two young school-age kids, I would’ve liked to of heard a few more of the downsides or negatives in some of the cities that you featured in the video. As an example, I know there has to be more negatives to consider in places like Mexico City then just the noise. Regarding San Miguel de Allende where we live, two factors to consider include 1) a higher cost of living than other places in Mexico and 2) the slower pace of life. Unlike the go go go of big cities, life moves slowly here. You need to be content with being a homebody sometimes. But on the fun side, we have awesome house parties & dinner parties.

I thought I heard of one town with only like 60,000 people?!? Well, I may have to watch again. I like pueblos, but I want good stores for shopping. I am used to Soriana which maybe in most of Mexico. I am in Mexico now and the town has nice places but it is dirty as heck and potholes so big your car could get lost in them!! 😱

Guadalajara & CDMX have the air quality you would suspect from cities their size. I think Queretaro's air quality is a bit deceiving for people who don't realize how much industry is here.

What about Sayulita, Los Barriles or Spa Buena Vista? I have lived in all three places. In Los Barriles and Spa Buenavista, there is great windsurfing and kite sailing. I dislike the whole area. The high humidity and heat have both driven me into some depression. However’ if you are a dog lover or love the ATV scene, both will have lots of space and trails. My dogs love to run free! Sayulita has the best food, cobblestone sidewalks which can be treacherous on older folks...I did a face plant in front of the world on several occasions. If one likes the party life, major thunderstorms, the smell of weed 24/7, beaches that are filled with dog poop, one will be happy.. The surf is great, not too much to do in the small town but eat, eat eat some of the greatest food in my travels in MX. I like culture. Neither areas I lived provided either. I feel this information all very helpful...Now my second month here...I agree with all said about Guadalajara...it is my most non favorite city...yes Merida all issues of weather is true..yet the beach of Progress is good escape....I am San Miguel today...yes ...the pavement is always a challenge..lovely.... I am torn between Queretaro and Morelia. I feel historic culture a draw...Collectivos..more information how where they go would be help Queretaro..district's I would to follow up...I turned you on to rewatch about Almos...I went to Jurquerlia..not liked it..to America I also went to Sayaulita..a disappoint over run with tourist..nice beach So I am unsure...weather is important...still. not sure,..less Americans...I am going back to consider my favorite so far is Coyocan

There was husband & wife pair of expat vloggers who moved to Oaxaca for awhile. Seems the locals do slash & burn agriculture a there and the wife's allergies couldn't tolerate the pollution.

Another caveat about Morelia: if you like colorful architecture it's not a good option. The Centro buildings are made of uniform pinkish stone. I enjoy cities with different colored buildings, like San Miguel, Guanajuato, Puebla.

Yes, the pink cantera stone is everywhere. Very colonial but not in the way people often think of Mexico. Thanks for sharing!

You are a major reason that we recently celebrated our first year here, in Sante Fe, Juriquilla, Querétaro. Thanks!!! OMG!!! Why doesn't the whole world know about this place. One drawback...a little (no, a lot) boring. Still, awesome weather, people (I have lived all over the world. Are Mexicans and Querétarons, in particular, the nicest?). I spent Dia de Muertos in Oaxaca City a few years back (2018), and it was a great experience. Another great place is Patzcuaro in Michoacan. Wherever you decide to spend Dia de Muertos, I suggest booking accommodation now as it's already filling up!

I really got a lot from this video, great job! I'd like to see more like it in other places in Mexico like, Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Bucerias, Nuevo Vallarta, Sayulita, etc. We are unsure what side of Mexico is the best fit for us.

Guanajuato City (based on five weeks in 2005): Not a good place for driving and not a good place for those who have issues walking up and down hills. Based on videos I have seen, Taxco has the same issues.

Yeah, most of those cities were founded/built before cars were invented so the cars had to adapt to the streets; a lot of old towns have that same issue and people there are used to walking everywhere.
