I'm sharing my thoughts about the Panasonic GX8, a 5 years old camera that looks almost like the new Sony A7C, and why you don't always need a new camera, lens, or photography gear.
The Panasonic GX8 was released on August 2015, and it's my favorite photography camera. Although it's just a Micro Four Thirds camera, it's performing very well and it's my idea of the perfect camera!
Thank you for watching!

I just stumbled across this video after dusting off my trusty Panasonic GX9 and it really made me think -- you're 100% correct. The new Sony A7C is extremely similar to the GX8 and GX9. I also have a Sony A7riii and was actually considering adding the A7C because of the smaller rangefinder-style body. NOW I realize that I don't need to do that at all -- I already have it. Plus, I love my Panasonic-Lumix primes. MFT is alive and well. Thanks for the great content and perspective.

Another sound and down to earth video, it's about getting out and actually photographing your choice of subject.. I have the gx8 with 12-35 f2.8 the 35-100 f2.8 power OIS MK1 & the little 20mm f1.7 pancake,, great camera & lenses which gives great images when used correctly.. I agree too much promotion of new spec and mega pixels 🤔 just to say look what gear I have? As you say learn to get the most out of the set up you have.. enjoyed.. cheers 👌

No. I mean it does, it has mini-hdmi. It works perfectly, but when you press "record", external screen turns black and says: "recording now". If you use an external recorder, an external monitor does work.

Good advice about buying new gear. Although, sometimes it can cheer you up and even make you go out at take more pictures 👍 I have been using my GX80 for more than three years. I recently bought the Oly 17mm f1.8, I didn't need it, I wanted it. At just 260 USD equivalent brand new, what could I do? Great lens!

Thank you for this video. I backed into my GX8 purchase last month. I started out with a GX85 and love it. At the beginning of last year I bought a GX9. Incremental improvements though I think the L monochrome D is my favorite jpeg B&W setting. The kit 12-604mm lens came with the body. Was going to sell the lens to lower the acquisition cost of the GX9 and I already own the PL12-60mm lens. Turns out I really like the vast choice of focal lengths. Was in the local camera store and found a GX8 for $400. I’ve seen several RU-vid videos stating the GX8 is the superior GX body so I bought it to try it out. More will be revealed. This past weekend I bought a 20mm pancake lens at a good price. Right now that. Lens lives on the GX8. I own the PL15mm and P25mm lenses. These are all used for street photography. Why am I purchasing all this gear? GAS? I’m looking for my perfect street gear. No more new cameras. If a camera took good pictures eight years ago it will continue to take good pictures. Features like IBIS will continue to improve. Right now good enough is good enough. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

@ToolCraze

I loved this camera but sold it because of it's weak IBIS. It was practically non-existent as it didn't do much if anything to help with slow shutter speeds. I too had the G85 when I had the GX8 and that has amazing IBIS, I can easily get 1/20th at 150mm with my 40-150mm Oly pro lens and was close to impossible to get 1/100th at 150mm with the GX8. I had the GX7 at one point and the 2 axis IBIS on that is way more effective than the 4 axis on the GX8. It's too bad because I really loved the GX8. Best body when it comes to build quality and form factor and styling in my opinion, very cool camera! I still have the G85 down to this day and also complimented it with a G9 with even better IBIS and a 20mp sensor. I wish they could make a GX8 successor, a MK II version (GX85 and GX9 don't count) with G9 guts and it would be my perfect camera.
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 3 года назад
Hello Tool Craze, thank you for the comment! My IBIS problem with the GX8 is only during video, it doesn't do sensor stabilization at all. With stills I have better result, but mostly it's because I'm using shorter focal lengths. I don't think GX8 IBIS is designed for longer focal length. Re GX8 II, I would love to see that too! That will be the camera of my dream! Once again thank you for the comment and happy shooting :)

Hi Gary W. Thanks for your video. You are always so earnest. I started out with a GX9 and 3 lenses in a bundle, pancake 12-32 kit lens, 25 f1.7, 45-150. This was a special deal where I essentially got the most expensive lens for free. And in the beginning I cannot say I knew what I was doing 🙂...now after a photo course and watching YT including your channel and other channels after covid-19 started and then lots of shots I think I know what I am doing. I feel torn between GAS and the minimal approach you advocate. Smaller sizes gear is easy to handle and it just feels nice. It is a drag hauling lots of gear but invariably when I leave a lens home that was the wrong one to not put in the bag/backpack. Happens all the time: I think like I won't need the 45-150 on this shoot and yet there I was the other day and the long end of the 12-60 was just not enough. I wanted to get more into videography so the GX9 was insufficient, obviously, and I thought well I will save up for a G90. But lo and behold just over a month ago a camera store sold it's G80s for under half price and another sold the Lumix 12-60 for under half price so my set up is like this: I usually have the 12-60 on the G80 (your G85) when I am out filming and the other lenses are on the GX9 for stills. I feel rather content. I cannot go ultra wide, for that I would need say Laowa 7.5 or 9 or PL 8-18. And I cannot go beyond 150 and sometimes I feel I miss shots in the latter case. But I should work more with the gear I have and work slowly to knowing if the next step is ultra wide, long telephoto or maybe macro. Sorry for the long message, it is hard to say something like this with fewer sentences. Please keep up your good work on your channel.
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 3 года назад
Hi Miljomupp, thank you for the comment :) I think you have it planned well, use whatever you have first to figure out what you are missing. GX9 is really good for video, as long as you don't need to have audio recorded directly to the camera (it is a great camera for shooting B roll). Regarding wide vs tele, it really depends on what you usually shoot. I found a lot of my peers are using telephoto more than wide, but I myself am using wide more than others. Thank you again for the comment, happy shooting :)

Hello Gary, wow congrats on the 100-400 Leica, it's a very high quality lens. Now I think you have a very nice setup there, covering all the way from ultra wide all the way to super telephoto. A small body that would've been great is the GM5, or one of the newer Olympus E-PL camera. They're both great for still photography!

I have not seen a comparison between the GX8 and the G9. On the used market the price is about the same. I like the weather sealing and flip up viewfinder of the GX8, but perhaps the video is better on the g9. I don't do a lot of video, so is there other advantages for one over the other?
@Gary_W
@Gary_W Год назад
Everything is actually better on the G9. It has better sensor stabilizer, better manual control, better video, 20mp sensor without alias filter, better video option, better framerate. The only thing on the GX8 that's better than the G9 besides the tilting viewfinder is only the lighter weight, which is important for travel. I would definitely get a G9 if it's priced similarly to the GX8, except if I really need a lighter weight camera for travel.

Hi Gary... great advice on supressing that GAS.... on that note, I actually need a new used camera since my old one is starting to fail. I've got a choice of a really mint GX9 and a really mint GX8. Things i'm still considering : 1. I'm really thinking that the GX9 viewfinder might be a disappointment even coming from OMD E-M1 and preferring the GX-8 2. I like a more discreet shutter sound. Is the GX8 really that much louder? 3. Is shutter shock a deal breaker on GX8 when I have this current choice? 4. Is GX8 that much more comfortable to hold than GX9? I don't record video much and do a lot of personal photography and family photography. Do you or anyone here reading have any recommendation for me considering my choice?
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 2 года назад
I much prefer the GX8 despite shutter shock(I can use electronic shutter to fix that), and the slightly inferior IBIS(I can use OIS lenses if I need more stability). The shutter sound isn't that bad. GX9 is more sleek, discreet, and slightly more compact. 😁

Hi, never own an DSLR or Mirror less camera. I am confused also by the name system camera. It is over here in Belgium said: the system camera: Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GX8. I shoot video/-Photos mostly using iPhone and older Panasonic HDC-SD90 camcorder. I saw today video where it has been found that the GX8 scores best in warm weather. As I heard you, is it not used for video because there where more futures into your Sony new camera. As it will be my first camera, I would ask you, is the camera in fact mirror less and how good is it for filming in lowlight? Last question, as I am an noob, I study me crazy and saw this advices of lenses: Standard lens, Leica DG 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Panasonic Lumix G 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6. Also seen on an youtube video, the lens: M.Zuiko digital 75mm 1.1.8. What I doing mostly, filming outsides and in house, that means that is using wide angle lenses on the iPhone. The HDC-SD90 has on his own wide field lens. But sometimes is also added an 41.5 step up to 52mm and wide angle. Sometimes is needed and Tele lens on iPhone. The camcorder doesn't need this because of 40 x zoom possibility. The lenses must paid separately: I have given an idea what I do, the answer I like to receive from you is, which lenses for my film and photo shoots behaviour I need? The Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GX8 is still order able but I need to be hurry as it is almost gone. Reminder, which lens as start model has both possibilities, wide and acceptable tele? Thanks for your time, Luc
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 3 года назад
Hello Jeannette, yes the GX8 is in fact a mirrorless. Low light filming is okay, as long as you don't go above ISO 1600 then you are fine. For a lens that can do both wide and tele, definitely the Panasonic 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6. 14mm is about as wide as the normal iPhone lens, and 140mm is about 10x zoom, so it's much more than the iPhone's telephoto lens. I made a review about the 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-myYucH6BOV8.html you can check it out and see if it fits your needs. The Lecia 12-60mm f/2.8-4 is a good lens but it's a bit pricey, and it only has 5x telephoto zoom albeit just a little bit wider than 14-140mm. Hope this helps! Cheers :)

@@Gary_W Thanks Sir, I will look into the given link and also of course to find an good order over here in Belgium. Question about ISO. Reminder, The Technics is me not known. As well I try to understand and in case of ISO concerning lowlight filming is until today understand: higher ISO is the setting to made the lowlight shooting nice and clear. So why is explained, film not higher then, ISO 1600?

Hey! I'm a GX8 owner, and looking at getting a Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 - primarilly for video work. So I'm wondering (if you know) if the version ii or version i would work better with the GX8 IBIS? Thanks in advance!

Hello! I personally only used the GX8 with the mark i version of the 12-35mm f2.8, and the IBIS only works together with the lens for photography. However for video, I don't think the stabilization of either version of the lens will work together with the IBIS. I hope this helps!

which is better GX8 or GX85 the price is similar but i'm not sure the difference on is 20mp and the other is 16mp

The GX85 will have better sensor stabilization, but it doesn't have weather sealing feature. Also it doesn't have flip screen, all comes down to what compromises you are willing to make. Hope this helps :)

@5:42 that was the reason i sold.my Gx85. Whacky ass Autofocus. Very unreliable. Even in contrast it still misses shit no matter the mode, and even if it acknowledges the subject it is very slow when focusing... Panasonic Guys told me shoot in manual lol 😂😂😂 when my old Samsung Galaxy s6 was snappy with it's Autofocus. I sold it for Sony.

😅😅😅 I used to gig a lot, but nowadays I''m just recording at home. Yes, the GX8 is still a really nice camera even by today's standard. I still use it occasionally for photography.
