There are over 13,300 British Columbians living with Parkinson’s disease (PD), a number that is expected to increase 65% by 2031. One of the first illustrations of Parkinson’s disease was published in 1886, and since then, it has been widely understood as a disease that only affects the senior population, primarily characterised by shaking. Parkinson Society British Columbia (PSBC) is committed to changing that perception. The truth is that Parkinson’s doesn’t discriminate based on age, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation. It affects people from all walks of life, and at PSBC, we are firm believers that the diversity of our community strengthens us. We’re in this together.
This is the second year PSBC has run 'This is Parkinson’s disease,' a campaign that will reshape your understanding of PD. A campaign that will bring together individuals across the province, country and internationally, in an effort to better the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease. To do this, we’re sharing the stories of real-life British Columbians living with PD.
Hilary is 25 years old and lives in Langley with her husband Justin. She began experiencing Parkinson’s symptoms at the age of 14 and, after almost a decade, was diagnosed with PD. She credits her faith in God and her strong family support system as her source of strength. Currently, she is nourishing her creative side by working as a freelance graphic designer and website developer. In Hilary’s spare time, she takes part in the rigorous exercise program CrossFit and runs her own website and blog. Recently, her neurologist recommended her as a candidate for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery and she has since been placed on a three year waitlist for an assessment with Dr. Honey, the only neurosurgeon who specialises in DBS in British Columbia.

I am sorry to hear you are a BC resident. BC healthcare really sucks. I hope your wait-time goes well for you. From my first meeting with specialists at the Mobility Disease Clinic at the Foothills in Calgary, I waited 14 months. This includes batteries of tests, along the way. I have a DBS device implanted. I swear I almost forget I have Park some days. Best wishes!

I feel so guilty and mean because in 2nd grade one of my teachers had Parkinson’s and it caused him to shake a lot and many of us used to tease him behind his back. Since I was young and wanted to blend in with the rest, I teased him too😐. We didn’t know he had a disease and thought he had ants in his pants. until one time that one of my teachers that was friends with him actually heard us teasing him and she got us in trouble. she went and told him about it and he started to sob. He said that he doesn’t understand why so much people make fun of him because of a disease that he can’t control. We all were sad but were too stubborn to apologize. 3 months later he left the school because he couldn’t work well with Parkinson’s😢😢. I’m sorry, Mr chance.

My mother was one of the first patients to receive modern DBS. While she was 100% disabled DBS allowed for her to a have a longer, happier life.

I’ve been having balance problems with my walking for about two years now. I started to notice speech changes I couldn’t explain to anyone about a year ago. About half a year ago I started to feel pins and needles on one side of my body specifically my right arm and leg. I just discovered this disease on google 20 min ago... Am I over exaggerating? Or should I go see a doctor? I’ve been thinking something was wrong with me neurologically for the past couple years I google and I google cause I don’t feel like myself and I finally feel like this is the most relatable thing to what I’m feeling... can someone post their symptoms of it??

I now wonder if some have PD at birth. I notice the ages are younger than what I've always read as having this problem. My wife used to say to me, your always sick but don't know it. I think she was right because I'm 78 and have PD. I wonder how long I'd had PD.
