Yeah, whoever wins the world championship match will not really enjoy it knowing they really are "just" the second best player.
@Scientist93
@Scientist93 2 года назад
@@Axiomatic75 So what? I think most people are way too obsessed about some "absolute" state of things when it comes to standings to appreciate the fact that being the second best in the world is still a MASSIVE achievement, officially or not. And speaking of officially, while I respect Carlsen's decision not to play in the next World Chess Championship title match, I also find it selfish to a degree, because he's exercising his own rights without thinking how that's gonna affect the chess world for generations to come. Just because he's good enough to be "above the system" doesn't mean that the title should be devalued to some sort of a fake status thing. Future champions deserve respect, and if Carlsen doesn't wanna be one currently, that's on him.

@Scientist93
@Scientist93 2 года назад
@@ReasonMakes Well, then, it's only right that his title goes to someone else! Maybe the standards by which FIDE measures champions are set up inadequately for someone so dominant in his field, but if he himself opts out of it, that's no reason (pun intended?) to treat whoever becomes the next World Champion like they don't deserve it. At the very least, don't blame Nepo and Ding for trying their best to prove themselves in a long-established system. If you think they can't be *true* champions, blame FIDE for not updating the format to reflect the reality of the situation more accurately.

That works (only I'd make a win with white worth 3 and a win with black worth 4) but the best part of it is a draw gets black a point but white nothing. Those playing black would almost never take the Berlin. We'd see a lot more QGDs.

Better than banning certain openings would be to make draws a little bit less worth it. Instead of half a point for each player, it only gives a quarter of a point to each player. So if you're losing you still wanna clutch the draw, but you also might risk it for the biscuit and play for a win.

Rfd1 instead of the correct Bxf6 21 c4 - sacrificing a pawn for very little compensation 28 g4?? 30 a4 instead of Bxc4 Niemann also didn't play the most accurate moves to bring home the point. After picking myself up off the floor when it happened I thought I doubt that will ever happen again but all it requires is one slip and anything can happen. He may be a cheat or he may be someone who had a great game. I'm kind of sad to see that the top chess players will often just draw like the first game ended. Since Grandmasters will likely recover the loss in ELO, what's stopping them from just going for it? I'm kind of low rated myself so if anyone has an explanation I'd like to hear :)
@ThyN00bly
@ThyN00bly 2 года назад
1) Unfortunately some openings basically force draws by making it so that if you play any move outside of theory or a completely safe move you will put yourself in a really bad position which can mean instantly losing at GM level 2) A draw means very little ELO change which is preferred by most over losing which could equate having to win multiple games for that one loss 3) Magnus wants to get to 2900 ELO, him beating the 3rd highest nets him 4 ELO points, if he loses once it’s probably equivalent to a month’s worth of winning games There’s probably an argument that for most GM’s winning or losing wont matter much ELO-wise cause they’ll probably just come back to it by playing but for Magnus it can make a big difference
@beaper

There is a simple solution used long ago in soccer. It may not be perfect but it helped a lot. All you have to do is raise the value of the points for a win so that a draw is unprofitable.

honestly I think banning openings is genius, you'd just have to figure out how to classify what counts as a certain opening. I also think the flipside would be pretty cool, like if there were tournaments where you only played the dragon for example, but the twist is that you don't know what the opening is until you show up

Like, black has a microscopically low… Wait, that’s not what I meant to say, no, that’s really-that's-gah, that is-I did not mean to say the word "low." I meant to say, "microscopically," uh, "worse position than white," I don’t know why I said, uh... Whatever, you know, now you can clip that, you know, you can clip me saying "microscopically…" you know, overlay it on, you know, whatever you wanna do. Anyway, um, black has a microscopically slightly worse position than white.

Banning the Berlin is interesting. I think it would be fun to have a tournament computer chess style where you get white and black with the same opening.

Let me pass you the knowledge against mosquitos: When you hear that buzz wait for it to get a tiny bit closer then immediately light up the room (with a flashlight or with main lights). They will immediately land on a wall and not move since their instinct is to camouflage. And since it was near you it will certainly land on a wall close to you or the bed. Then kill it. Haven't been bitten in 5 years with that technique.

I always find it funny that you think correspondent's chess players use engine based analysis when most players that play correspondents chess just want a long time to look at the board play out a bunch of possible positions and then send back their move it's for people that like chess but don't necessarily want to play a whole game all in one sitting

The entire point of chess is that it's purely the player's knowledge and decision competing. If you start banning openings then there is no game anymore, you're just pretending. Talk about making changes to Chess once someone has actually reached the top. The complexity of chess means we're not even close to that.

Idea for a new series: guess the player. The concept is that you watch a game without knowing who played it and then try to guess which player played the game

what sad? you think magnus can score 9/9? with black? No one risks anything with black OR white against Magnus. They all want draw. how Magnus can risk something in this game. He can try to draw with black / win with white.

chess patch 1.01 : * Playing Kxd8 is no longer legal, if its the only move then mate is declared. for giving noobs a better chess experience * en-pessant removed for giving noobs trouble * stalemate while having more than 10 point advantage is also mate for giving noobs trouble * The arbiter may interfere at any point and decline a move by a player if twitch chat votes against it for being boring

Well converted endgame by Nepo there, beautifully played~ On the other game, I've played some games where I played long castle with the stacked b-c, or f-g pawns, it looks a bit scary and shaky considering you put your king out in the open in front of the line of the rook and queen like that, but it's very much holdable with decent play, I even castled into a queen a rook and have to run my king inside the barrier of my doubled pawns lol... Definitely an interesting and adrenaline rush but you get compensated greatly with very strong attack because your other pieces are very active and the moment your opponent stop threatening your king, it'd be very hard to defend! Recommended for players who don't want to play boring chess, but it's tough to play it on higher ELO (only on certain circumstances; e.g., your passive king's side, or your opponent's active queen's side (counter intuitive enough right? Lol) you purposely castle into opponent's active queen's side, and clog off that side and they can never have any audience with your king lol 🤷🤣)
