Back in the bad old days some staff would take advantage of students due to their power over them. DCI has now recognized the problem and there is much more oversight of the individual corps staff and marching members, and policies are in place to address the problems. Unfortunately it doesn't change the past.

So sad. My favorite Corp that originally got me totally invested into Drumline. I was a freshman snare at a competitive HS in which the instructor was very intense and high standards, and I imagine hugely influenced by the Cadets as well. He and our Band Instructor even showed us the 2000’s Disney show that year to hype us up towards the end of the season to show us what is possible with dedication and hard work. That’s when I was totally hooked. I continued this tradition for many years, showing the younger and new kids the same show yearly, even when I was the instructor at that very same HS for years. Sad, but at least we have many videos online of several great years of performances. Too bad there isn’t a higher quality version of 2000. RIP Cadets😢

@@skraegorn7317This is exactly why the Blue Devils and the Bluecoats are the top 2 corps in DCI, and Blue Devils are at the top. The future of DCI, I think, is uncertain. It doesn’t make sense financially. Students have to pay thousands to perform for not a lot of people. The culture seems to want to be like a sport when it’s not. DCI is “major league” when it’s not. I think marching bands need to figure out what they are. Are they entertainment or competitive? Unlike sports, not every school can field a band.
@andrewfilmsdrums
@andrewfilmsdrums 3 месяца назад
At the risk of sounding like one of those old “get off my lawn” guys…I think DCI could save a lot of lot of money if they cut out the unnecessary props, electronics, and new uniforms every year. The 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s had so many memorable shows that we still love today, and they didn’t have any of that extra stuff. It’s time to dial things back and return to the essence of drum corps. It can’t be a broadway musical, interpretive dance, a sporting event, and a musical performance all at the same time. Let’s get back to drum corps, the way it used to be. Oh and also maybe shorten up the tour too. We don’t have canvas the entire country every single year. Back in the day we used to have championships on the east coast one year and west coast the next. Maybe we get back to that model and shorten the tour, alternating between different parts of the country.
@SWilla00946
@SWilla00946 3 месяца назад
@@andrewfilmsdrums Although I kinda agree with your first paragraph, the actual issue is transportation. Thats what over half of those fees go to. As much as I'd love to go across the country next summer, every summer can't be like that. 5k+ is too much for so many people. I'm just praying that I won't get priced out of ever marching but i genuinely don't know that. side thing,as a front ensemble person I can't imagine that its necessary for world class fronts to get new instruments every year. You can argue, " oh over the summer they go through so much damage." if these marimbas were unusable then why the hell does every corps resell them when the season is over? just do work on them over the year.
@andrewfilmsdrums
@andrewfilmsdrums 3 месяца назад
@@SWilla00946 Agree 100%, including your transportation comment. Like I said, shorten the tour, and alternate between different parts of the country. A lot of east coast corps will not come out every year to the west coast shows. Like I remember Phantom Regiment coming out west in 2015. The Bluecoats came out in 2009. Phantom also came out in 2008. But they don't come out here EVERY year. But the West Coast corps DO go east every year, since they moved the Championships to Indy, which is just not fair for Blue Devils, SCV, Cascades, Academy, etc. I think they need to return to the model of alternating the World Championships between West and East. I went to the last time they had it out West in 2007, at the Rose Bowl. But I haven't been since. Get back to that model of alternating the location--the US is just too big geographically. And if it's your year as a drum corps to travel far for the championships (like if it's in California and you're an East-coast corps), then you just have to shorten up your tour that year. Don't go backwards to places like Atlanta, just start going in the direction of Championships. And if you're Carolina Crown for example, yeah you might have to spend a lot of money traveling all the way across the country, but guess what, you'll save a ton of money next year when the championships can move out east by you...maybe to Atlanta for example. There are for sure better ways to set up the tour than making every corps travel across the entire country every year.

Eric did his research and the video is accurate from everything I've read. The assault from 1982 and lawsuit was addressed in the video, and that surprised me. I feel like we got the story with all it's ugly truth. I have nothing but respect for Eric for showing us the good, the bad and the ugly.

Holy shit!!! I marched Madison Scouts in '91 (I'm the soprano soloist/duet guy in the ballad), and it cost me MAYBE $550??? $600??? And that included crappy apartments, many bottles of Milwaukee's Beast...like, an absurd amount of it...and a crap load of Subway during pre season! Can't believe how expensive it's all gotten! Sucks.

On the one hand, it’s a massive shame and really sucks. The Cadets are one of, if not my favorite, corps. So many legendary shows. On the other hand, it seems like it was a very toxic organization. Not for everyone in the corps, of course, but clearly for some. The chickens always come home to roost eventually.

I was at the 1987 finals in Madison. They were amazing. I knew some of the members from the late 80s and early 90s. Most of them were extremely humble, friendly, and awesome. It's sad the corps has to fold because of some horrible staff. Thanks for the memories, Garfield Cadets (that is what I knew them as).

Man... I marched 97, and some time later, when I had moved to CA, I was fathoming going to finals again (I had been every year since.) It was probably 2003 or 2004. There I was debating buying the tickets and the plane tickets and a hotel. I was listening to Cadets shows. At some point, the end of Cadets 2000 came on. I replayed the ending bit three times, felt CRAZY excitement, and it of course moved me to buy all the tickets, I just HAD to feel that again. To this day, 21 years after that, I'll occasionally find myself awake far too late at night, down yet another Awesome Cadets Moments rabbit hole (which in my case usually involveds 93, 98, 2000, 2005, perhaps 87, and a few others,) and there I'll be, hearing the end of Cadets 2000 again and again and feelin' nostalgia and joy and ecstasy and sentimentality and sadness and excitement and happiness too, even though my marching days ended decades ago and Cadets themselves are ended now too. We always have the music and the drill and the memories and the experiences and the love, remember this. #FHNSAB.

@@highstimulation2497 yeah those shows (especially 84 and 2000) really resonated with me that cadets was my home (hence why i joined cadets in 23) but as cadets is gone it seems a lot of the talent staff and member wise has spread across the top 12 (especially crown and scv) so I guess in a way the Bergen county feet will not just be exclusive to cadets now

They were called America's Drum Corps, so were asked to perform at the USA Olympics in 1996. A decade in a half later they got rid of the man than made them great and the Cadets have been down hill ever since. I'm not surprised--I'm heart broken but not surprised!

There is a larger financial beast at play here. Back in the day the cost of living was cheaper. Most people gave thier time for free or very little outside of the initial show writing. Now anyone involved has to get paid as everyone's personal costs have gone up and someone has to pay for it. Add to that over the last 20 years " Others" outside the organisation looked in and said these corps have got money so lets get a slice. Constant uniform changes insurance, accommodation, insrument supply. Gone are the days a kid could just turn up, have a talent, march and age out with the abilities to think of maybe turning pro with thier skills. Being a music graduate has narrowed the talent pool and now the feeder corps system is dying because even small corps struggle. Dci is a slow moving car crash now and losing the Cadets is a gateway much more like this. Thanks for the memories and tremendous performances.

This is sad on so many levels. The kids that bust their asses every day,do not deserve this. My corps disbanded for different financial reasons,and it hurts every day- to this day.

No more Z-pulls. Sad. I remember watching the 83 and especially the 84 show and thinking "this is the future of drill design". Zingali was the father of modern drill design. Even today, his concepts, particularly for brass staging, are the basis of drill design.

Note that the 2020 suit is civil, not criminal, and names The Cadets (CAE) and almost all past and future manifestations as defendants. It is not a criminal case against Vogt, which the video seems to imply. All details are available on the Bergen County NJ Superior court Web site, in the public domain.

I am a 93 & 94 Cadet Mellophone player. I have enough sense & class to maintain my prior testimonies that George Hopkins and the Cadets staff & family deserve credit for creating hardworking, motivated, innovative, human beings grown to push themselves toward their goals & success. I used & passed along George Hopkins quotes to teach my own classes of students when I was a high school band director; built amazing programs & minds over the years, including myself & my own family. Having been in the Cadets taught me to live an always striving lifestyle and to not accept mediocrity from myself. Despite all your crucifixions of George; I will not see my history, nor the Cadets be tarnished by 80s bullshit when I was in the 2nd grade when I clearly remember teachers able to grab a child by the neck and paddle the shit out of them in front of the enter class while the kid cried. 80s were different and to come back after all these years to see my Holy Name tribe crucifying our leader in my mind is bullshit. WTF happened to my drum corps? FHNSAB ???

I am truly shocked and dismayed. I have known the Cadets since the 1970's. I started marching with a corps known as the "Brookhaven Crusaders" from Brookhaven, PA. I marched with them when they won the PA State Championship. Shortly after there were a few of the members that had a falling out with the head of the corps and quit. I was one of them and found another corps in the Bromall area of Philidelphia. They were known as the "Keystone Regiment" and marched with them until 1974. That year the "Crossmen" were born. This was a joining of two smaller corps, the 'Keystone Regiment' and the '507 Hornets". I aged out in 1975. The Cadets at that time were based in the town of Garfield, NJ. AKA the "Garfield Cadets". I watched the Cadets grow and was always impressed with what they could come up with. I am truly sadden and feel as though I have lost a member of my own family. Rest easy guys. You did good.

I paid $2500 in 2006 for my cadets tour fees. Plus what I lost in being able to work, plus luggage/gear/miscellaneous, my parents traveling to see me in indi. I’d put it as a great expense to be in a corps these days. As it was a huge expense for me and my family back then. It’s gonna be tough not to root for the home team as the activity moves on. Breaks my heart. Marching arts changed my life for the better. I’m a teacher, tech for marching bands, and have much more “umph” in my resume when applying for jobs. My memories and experience were incredible and I never felt unsafe…just really REALLY tired for 90 days 😂
