I know I must sound like a broken record by now but my word, all of the amazing launches, updates and information that has come in thick and fast this week has astounded all of us. So much happening with SpaceX’s Starship development. These week a range of booster catch testing. Indeed this is SpaceX's Boldest Starship Test Yet and The Countdown Begins as we head toward flight in a few weeks. Falcon 9’s blasting off all over the place, preparations for multiple Crew Dragon missions, including of course an extra surprise one. Not to mention astounding stuff from Blue Origin and Rocket Lab. Yea, this is a big one. Starship Updates, Starliner Return Info, Progress MS-28 (89P) Resupply, the announcement of Fram2, Falcon 9 launches with Starlink Group 8-3 and 10-7, the Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission or ASBM, WorldView Legion 3 & 4 and Transporter-11. Along with that a gigantic Everyday Astronaut Blue Origin Tour and Rocket Lab - A Sky Full of SARS. What an insane week!

What I don't get is what market are all these launch companies getting into? SpaceX is putting up Starlink but what other companies are trying to compete with them? So many launches and yet there is also a great deal of concern about all the junk in orbit already, it's making manned missions increasingly dangerous. Aren't they worried that the UN might have to put a stop to most satellite launches? Seems like most of these companies are getting into the market too late to really make a profit before being shut down. Reminds me of Wall-E when he is leaving Earth, the amount of crap in orbit is so thick it makes Earth look like a Dysons Sphere.

I have a question about TPS tiles. I believe that there are materials that generate a magnetic field when heated, can these be incorporated in a TPS design to help keep the plasma away from the surface of the tiles. Falcon 9 is an amazing launch system. I hope Falcon Heavy is better utilized. It can be used for Dream Chaser.
@ReinReads
@ReinReads 25 дней назад
Falcon Heavy’s low use is why New Glenn will struggle. There just aren’t a lot of demand for launches in this weight class. Then an smaller subset that will need the larger diameter vs Falcon Heavy. Once New Glenn is finally ready to fly payloads companies may build heavier & larger payloads. But these types of projects take many years to build. By then they will be competing with fully reusable Starship. Blue Origin’s best bet might be to buy Sierra Space and use Dream Chaser to develop a fully reusable upper stage.
@anthonypelchat
@anthonypelchat 25 дней назад
FH actually launches a lot compared to other rockets. Out of 26 rockets that launched around the world last year, FH was launched the 9th most. Falcon 9 is just a beast that is launching drastically more than anyone else by far.
@LegendaryGodKing
@LegendaryGodKing 24 дня назад
I don't believe heavy is human rated. I know it's about the capsule. But I think nasa tries to fly with abort zones when carrying people. Dragon has a lanch escape. But on falcon heavy, you have 3x the fuel, 3x the thrust, and the flight path is probably vastly different depending on payload weight and booster landing zones. I don't think the dragons' launch escape can outrun falcon heavy.
@LegendaryGodKing
@LegendaryGodKing 24 дня назад
If you think about it, dream chaser is just a mini starship with a trunk instead of a frunk.
@dphuntsman
@dphuntsman 24 дня назад
Keep in mind the single main reason for FH’s ‘low’ use: and that is the incredible increase in capability of Falcon 9 from v1 to the fully operational v5. If you had told me over 10 years ago about this I would have told you it was a practical improbability at the very least; a honestly think its unprecedented in essentially the same form-factor launch vehicle, the improvement made. FH’s main competition over what was originally intended……has been F9, v5, which has stolen a majority of its payloads! - Dave Huntsman

Let us hope that SpaceX will add more than one actuator piston to deploy the catch rail in the final version of the system. SpaceX does not seem to be very big on backup systems. They seem to forget that backup systems are the thing which overcame the "probability of failure" equations all through the history of space flight. When it comes to critical systems, like the crew, you have to have a system that "fails gracefully" or better has a backup system to prevent failure in the first place.

so i said this in a reply to the top comment but i think this is important to say again so more people can see it it is possible to not like elon musk and like spacex at the same time. Elon is a figurehead and doesn’t really have all that much control over day to day operations at spacex. Starship is not elon’s rocket, it’s spacex’s rocket. People who don’t like elon musk are not anti-spacex, and people who like spacex are not pro-elon. there are many things that can be true at once: -spacex has been objectively good for the space industry -elon musk can be considered to be a bad person by some and a good person by others -people who don’t like elon musk are not automatically “woke” or “npcs”, there are many valid criticisms of him that go beyond his political views -spacex/starship failing would be a bad thing, and spacex/starship succeeding would be a good thing, no matter who’s in charge failure to accept that all of these facts are true at the same time leads to echo chambers and pointless debates elon musk also isn’t black and white. @@dphuntsman If Starliner can't bring the astronauts home safely, then either way, there is a single design. Flying on Dragon is the safe option. And when failure means two dead astronauts, always go with the safe option.

Elon is an a$$hole. He is also not SpaceX. Starship isn't a "Project 2025 rocket", especially since the makers of Project 2025 wouldn't be smart enough to build a rocket. (Also, Slava Ukraini, Harris/Walz 2024!)

Good to see Rocket Lab in the little niche market still having vision and flexibility for bigger things, that new carbon fiber layup machine is huge, it just comes down to scalability. Keep it up Kiwi's, "Kia Kaha" - "Stay Strong".
