Yeah... Along with him, putting is sword away and walking away while the others slayed... Like... I'm f*cking king Leonidas and I walk away calmly out of a massacre...
yeah like when jared leto said “i’m not gonna kill ya… i’m just gonna hurt ya… real bad…” man i got chills u could tell he was living the reality of the scene
@@thisisntsergio1352 no he means that because of Gerald Butler making more of an effort, from what the director asked for, the iconic line was born. If he didn’t make it loud like a roar it wouldn’t have been the same.
That is my general feeling about the movie...I hated the sequel though and that it spawned so many movies trying to use the same story telling, visual style and slo mo.
@@chrisa8863 Well it was invented for transferring files easily so it definitely used to be normal. Edit: and people talk like those two in real life anyways, not just online.
As much of a meme as this line became and how many parodies of it there are, it really was perfectly delivered, especially with the way Leonidas kicks that guy down into the pit right afterward
Yeah, since the kick was part of the script, the powerful delivery makes perfect sense. I can't imagine how it would sound if he whispered it calmly. "Sir, this is Sparta 🙂 now if you'll kindly lower yourself into the giant hole behind you, that will conclude our conversation"
This is why I think directors having a specific type of relationship with their actors is so crucial, being able to accept the fact that they can bring a lot more to the film than simply following instructions.
Depends on on both the directors & actors... like Kubrick movies are exactly what he wanted them to be and forced the actors to give the exact performance that he wanted
True story. Saturday night down the pub. Man stands on a table and the place was packed. Shouts Spartans! What is your profession! Every man in there replied "ahu, ahu, ahu". Beer went flying everywhere. Epic film
At the school I work at, our rooms are named after our local high school mascots. One of the rooms is the “Spartans” and every time I’m in there I badly want to yell “Spartans! What is your profession!”
This is awesome And it reminds me of a time when amazing spontaneous synergy happened recalling a completely different entertainment reference - though it was the same kind of thing. Wish I caught it on camera NYC West Village Circa 2004 or 5 A dude gets bumped as often happens in crowded streets on a Friday night but the guy who gets pushed doesn’t get huffy for real Instead he looks at the guy and shouts so loud “I’m Rick James” and everyone around on the streets simultaneously said “Bitch!” It was crazy and perfect and back then we did not have good cameras on our flip phones to record
Fun fact: Once a Spartan man reached the age of 30, he was allowed to start a family. He was expected to remain physically fit throughout adulthood; he served in the military and continued to receive training until age 60. Only then was he allowed to retire from military service. All Spartan men trained and served as warriors.
@@MatheusLB2009the reason for high mortality rates in ancient and medieval times was high infant and child mortality, bringing the average age of death down. Generally speaking, if you lived past the age of 12 you lived a full life and died at an age similar to modern times. It obviously depends where and when you were, but this weird assumption that 20 years old was middle aged and 55 was ancient is stupid.
Man when this movie came out a kid in my first period HS classes came in, late mind you, yells this is Sparta and kicked his chair across the room pretty much and we ALL cracked up including the teacher.. anddd THAT is my memory of this line being iconic haha
My HS's mascot was/is Spartans. Try being on a sports team and wearing customized shirts that said "This is Sparta" for home games and "Prepare for glory" for road games lol
He killed it!!! Unbelievable performance. The first time I saw 300 it shocked me. I bought the DVD and don't know how many times I've watched it. It is an epic movie!❤❤❤
The only way you kick a dude down a well is if you deliver the message with that same passion. Nothing else works. Goosebumps. (Plus when he turned to his wife for permission shortly before. Brilliant.)
Yes, those Spartans were so badass they feared nothing.... Besides not getting their wives permission. Even on decisions a king makes that will effect all his people. But wifeys permission is what matters most. As eye rolling as that part was, the best interpretation is him getting her counsel/opinion/ vote on what he had already decided to do. Had she shaken her head no would he slink off with his head down leaving the messenger alive? Or he just wanted to make eye contact seeing as part of the reason the messenger was going to die was his disrespect of the queen and country. He had been plainly warned about choosing his words carefully. Was the nod yes really needed ? Right after she mouthed off to him no less. The line about "we should have sent our women to fight seeing how weak your soldiers are" was good. Plenty
When I watched this movie for the first time. You could feel this man's plight. I feel this is so iconic because Spartans trained the way they did to be ready for a fight to protect their city. The enemy tried flexing on them on their own turf and he had to send a clear message back. You want a fight well you got one hope you understand what you're in for cuz "THIS IS SPARTA!"
A Scottish Guy playing a (mediterranean\Greek) Spartan leader. He has played Americans as well. Very versatile actor.. Hope hes around for years to come and keeps providing good movie's
I love this line - the best ever. Iconic movie, no one can replace Gerard Butler in this role. The emotion conveyed for this line was totally reflective of a Spartan King under threat : insolent, indignant, fortified for war exactly the way a Spartan warrior King would be. Thanks Gerard for bringing King Leonidas to life.
My favorite scene is towards the end when he tricks Xerxies by falling to his knees. Removing head armor...that look in his eyes just before he throws the spear....just EPIC!
300 is just one of those movies you’ll always find yourself coming back to when you’re looking for a good movie to watch Timeless classic fr 💯 Wanted to be a fighter after watching this movie when I was kid 😂
I didn’t find that movie to be special at all. Perhaps you find it nostalgic because you were a kid but compared to Brave Heart and Gladiator. It is really not that memorable, especially when that kick and line is the only thing that the vast majority of people can remember about that movie 😮
@@daigorowolf2136 nah I remember a lot from the movie like the part where he is asked why he only brought 300 men against an army of thousands and then he asked what everybody did for work there were farmers, blacksmiths, etc when Leonidas asked the Spartans they all yelled in unison shit was chilling Everybody’s brain works differently they enjoy different things. To each their own lol
@@daigorowolf2136 my favorite moment is the whole first day of battle with their iconic Phalanx formation and the way they showed no Spartan died on the first day while obliterating three Persian waves. It's a timeless classic and I've rewatched it at least 40-60 times now. Many times even my whole friends group. It has many, many iconic scenes.
@@earthling_parth The quote, there are too many Persian soldiers they could block out the sun and Leonidas responds then we will attack them from the shadows is historically inaccurate. That quote belongs to General Ulchi mundok who created and destroyed a dam which resulted in massive losses for the advancing Chinese army which was at the very least 30 times bigger. Not only drowning but breaking up the formation of the Sui army making them an easy target for Koguryo cavalry. A small army of Koguryo (Korea) obliterated a much larger invading force Sui (China). 10,000 vs 300,000 is the small estimate to 30,000 vs 900,000 is the large estimate. The battle of Salsu was one of the most unique victories ever achieved anywhere that hardly anyone talks about. And at the time, when I was watching 300, I was completing my minor in East Asian studies in Uni as well as a major in Economics. Perhaps that’s the reason why I was biased when watching 300 as I hate embellishments or rather historical inaccuracies in movies or maybe it was the darkening and speeding up of the action scenes that annoyed me. I’ll try to watch it again on Netflix and let you know if 300 really gets the praise it deserves. But as it stands right now nothing in the movie stood out as remarkable and I find the movie extremely overrated.
Hell ya, 300 is one of my top movies of all time. The pure masculine hype and energy gets me into gym mode, ready to conquer the day. That line couldn't have been delivered any better. Gerard Butler nailed it!
No, it's not. It is a good telling of the story of The Battle of Thermopylae, but it is nowhere near being anywhere near the best film ever. It's an action film, a modern, cgi one, inferior to the old action movies. It is also crammed with fake abs and ridiculous fight scenes. 👊💪 Gyms are for wimps dude, no Spartan would ever use a fucking gymnasium, for fuck's sake. They'd laugh at you.
@@The-Clockwork-Eye Gyms are for wimps? Really?? You don't think lifting hundreds of pounds while using proper technique and with full range of motion is manly? Why don't you explain what exactly is manly, then.
That was one of the most iconic lines of the film, and glad they kept it. He made a political, leader, and warrior statement with three words. Most succinct in his defiance to the disrespect of a man child who thought himself a god.
I saw it at a Thursday night midnight screening at a theater in Tines Square the night before it officially opened. Yo…that theater was *bananas!* Everybody was going nuts. Normally, I hate a loud theater, but this was exactly how this movie was meant to be seen- with a packed, rowdy audience. This was probably the funnest movie theater experience I’ve ever had.
This interview gave me chill bumps. I don't know how many times I watched the movie. Total fan of yours. I was on the edge of my seat every single time I watched this show. Great cinematography great acting great plot great great great great.
I can’t see this being delivered any other way. Whispered? No way. The yelling of the line was the switch from calm during the entire conversation to rage from having heard enough. It was perfect!
But I live in a small village in rural Sweden called Sågmyra. So for me it's "this is Sågmyra!". But all in all there is no law here and the same rules apply. So if anyone brings shit to my house, threatens my family or something, I will politely ask them to come back in a couple of months, so I have time to dig a big ol' pit. Then invite the agressors back again so I can yell and kick! 💪🏼
