The white cheap slides are more common in north america in homes but woodworkers prefer the full extension slides because of the easiness of installation and you can get them for pretty cheap in the states in bulk ($6 per pair)

Even bulk on Amazon can get you decent ones for >$10 a pair. I have boxes now since I buy at least 20 sets at a time to get the price down. For the price they can't be beat really. Those bottom mounts are super nice but $$

@@darkdragonbd I found a "contractor pack" of ten sets of 14" ball bearing full extension soft close slides at Home Depot for about $97. So, say $10 per pair. The regular price if you buy one or two sets was about $15 to $16 per set. If you don't get the soft close feature, you save $2 or $3 per set.

Since the two first drawers are the same size, why didn't you used the 6$ slide on the brad nails drawer? It would have supported the bottom better. You said so yourself.

Those $6 slides can be made "full extension" by simply making a smaller drawer. Cheating? Sure but who is going to measure the drawers--except maybe us woodworkers. 8-)

Seriously, bravo! This video answered basically every question that I had regarding drawer slides and major bonus points for throwing the Ikea drawer in there! Considering all your options instead of just the ones that make you look like a fancy carpenter. The editting isn't great. All that lurching closer to the camera is OTT and why I didn't watch more than about 2 mins. And what happened to people just behaving normally when they explain stuff, we're not all children who need to be "entertained" the whole time by a big "personality".

@@mediapc4747 Whether or not I agree with your opinions, those things aren't editing. The camerawork is cinematography, and the rest is acting. (both could be summed up under directing, as well.) I was strictly commenting on the actual editing - things like the choice of cuts, narrative flow, and scene transitions

Alexander - I beg to differ with you on the $20 slide as to not being adjustable. Look at the mount holes; some are slotted horizontal and some vertical, just pick the one you need to move fwd, aft, up or down. There are three that are tabbed so you can pry the rail inward to reduce the dimension between the left and right just in case your drawer is slightly too narrow. I only use these slides just for those reasons. I really enjoy your videos and always look forward to your next. When you have them all installed and your first closing is difficult, the tabbed

Absolutely. You can adjust either the runner in the cabinet or the fixed runner on the drawer, or both. Make sure you use the hole at the end of the tab if you need to adjust the runners laterally.

The IKEA runner is actually similar to Blum, originally is Blum INTIVO, but they're made in China division, not Austria. I use MOVENTO for all my projects anyway, they're the best if you consider the effort of making box joint or dovetail boxes. Love your channel. Thank you for sharing :)

Not in every country. In Germany Maximera Drawers are made by Hettich… in Austria and Switzerland they are made by Blum… somewhere there was a list. 🤔

having in mind blum manufactures most of ikea drawer and lift mechanisms, the ikea drawer is a fairly good value. also I know everyone is crazy about the blums, but i still find hettich far superior.

Yes, Blum makes these for IKEA. There are several high quality hardware players for these products, but I think in the end we all chose one. It's sort of silly, actually, because I personally think that the best hinge isn't made by the some company who makes the best slide, and the best lift-up fitting is made by yet a third.

Depending in which country you buy the Ikea Maximera drawers... In Austria and a few other countries the Ikea drawers are made by Blum, in Germany they use Hettich - as far as i know, in France it’s another manufacturer.

Ikea drawers look very similar to Blum because they are Blum Tandemboxes, just made for Ikea.

I purchased about 20 of the Blum slides a few years back. I added them to EVERY shelf in our kitchen bottom cabinets. My wife was aghast at the price but now she absolutely loves them. I built a little "wall" at the sides and rear of the shelves , 2 " tall so things don't fall off when you open/close them. The bottom of the cabinets didn't have movable shelves so I just built simple ones out of ½" birch plywood including under the sink. Wife tells me that if we ever move I'll be doing the whole thing again.

Lookup the Krenov school of fine furniture. This is one of the few woodworking schools and done with a far higher level of precision and craftsmanship than Alex's work. Although, there are internships for carpentry just about anywhere. If you Look for a Makerspace in your area. They usually have classes and are filled with people that love to do stuff like this.

In Germany and in Switzerland where Alexandre is from when I remember correctly it’s a 3year apprenticeship to become a carpenter and your are only allowed to call you a carpenter when you did a apprenticeship as it is a protected job description. As final exam you have to build a piece of furniture and there are also further education in a “master” which concludes with the construction of the masterpiece. Not to be mistake for a university’s masters degree by the way. But I don’t think that Alexandre learned it this way as his constructions are pretty basic in comparison to what a carpenter would do. I’m not saying that he has a bad technique though.

I really appreciate the breakdown of the different drawer slides. One thing I like about those cheap $6 ones, is that you can easily cut them down to size for custom applications. I've done kitchen renos before using the IKEA cabinet system. I like to think of IKEA as an alternative hardware store that also has a nice cafeteria! Their cabinet system is really well engineered with a huge variety of cabinet sizes. They're also integrated to work with accessories like their bins, organizers and internal lighting systems. When you buy a system, you just chat with one of their associates, they go and pick all the parts, and it arrives on a cart ready for you in the pick up area. Their cabinet systems are so popular, there are even companies that build aftermarket high end cabinet fronts for them!

The IKEA drawers are made by BLUM, and all the specifications are on BLUM’s website under their "Tandembox" drawer box system: www.blum.com/us/en/products/boxsystems/tandembox/programme/ (At least they were the same product back in 2009-please let me know if this is no longer the case)

One comment. At the 8:16 mark, it is easiest to start at the top. Cut a tall spacer piece. Use it on both side. The “lower” the spacer block to install the second-highest drawer. And so on. If you go from the bottom up, you run the risk of cumulative error. Hope this all makes sense.

I have been using Ikea drawers, and also Grass drawers from another kitchen supplier. Mainly I have modified the fronts to fit different setups, and I also integrated Ikea drawers into cupboards. I need to build now a cabinet that is ~45 cm deep. There is an Ikea Maximera drawer which is 45 cm deep, but unfortunately it is available only in the tallest size. I could get away with Ikea drawers if I would use the back plate from their 60 cm deep drawers, but that means that I would need to buy two drawers for one. I have been searching for something similar, but without much success. There seems to be not much choice in Europe (Finland). I could not find even Blum Tandem (similar to Movento) mentioned in the video. As my board cutting possibilities are limited, I would use something similar to Ikea drawers. I came across to GTV AXIS PRO Drawer System, available on Amazon Germany. This is something that I could use, and it is available in all sizes. Does anyone have experience with this? Any suggestions where to find similar solutions are highly appreciated.

Personally. Throw all of these drawer slides out. Use 608 bearings and make a raiI. I have 2 42”x10” drawers, one is light but the other is probably 110lbs.

I know English is your second language because you pronounce "height" correctly. A great many other videos including one I just watched have native English speakers saying "heith". I am an immigrant myself and can spot our kind easily. Anyway, GREAT video. One thing I would like to mention is that the slides you like the least due to their non-adjustability can be made adjustable with simple L-Brackets. This takes just a bit of width from the drawer but what's a millimeter here or there? The L-brackets support the drawers as well and even allow for angle adjustment of the face to the frame.

I wish I had half your skill and half your tools so I could attempt to make some desk drawers that I want so I can avoid trying to buy the crappy Alex drawers from Ikea since my desk is 152cm wide & 76cm deep with a thick wood block for the table top and a heavy computer & monitor so I don't trust those ikea ones to support all that weight but I don't have most of these tools to build one since I have only my tiny apartment garage to work with.

A $6 drawer slide ($3 ea!) means either people on the supply chain aren't getting paid properly or there's environmental shortcuts in the materials supply. Don't buy cheap crap, give a damn and pay a few $s more.

You completely left out how much space is needed between the drawer width and the cabinet width to allow for the thickness of the various slides. It seemed like the drawers were identical in size except for height. So much time was spent on what is your favorite and almost no time explaining how to properly position especially for a bank of drawers. I gained no knowledge in how to put multiple drawers in a cabinet. Very disappointing.

The side is pretty ugly when you think about it. But what I hate is the front facing handles on really nice door fronts. It ruins the look. What I’d like is door handles/pulls that disappear or are minimally visible or part of the design of the door.

Those white slides are very easy to install and live up to the description...very cheap. In this case, the cheap is inferior. Seeing the roller metal is a small price to pay for slides that last super long.

That ‘groove’ can be done a couple ways. My favorite is with a router, but you can do it another way by layering multiple saw blades in your table saw.

Dado blades (multiple blades stacked together) are illegal in most European countries and the table saws only have arbors long enough for a single blade. We are lucky in the US.

Few tips when using roller bearing slides, since they are so picky when it comes to sizing: Make the front/back the exact width you need (USUALLY 1" narrower than your cabinet opening, but check the slide instructions for exact clearance required. It's SOOO much easier to size doing it this way, since the depth of the drawer front to back usually has a wide tolerance. If you're going to miss your dimensions, miss them so that the drawer width is smaller than required, and certainly not larger. You'll never get them to slide properly if they are too tight, but you can get away with it if the drawer is slightly too small.
