i think moving the tech system in this direction is a great move. it diversifies countries more as they progress through the tech at their own pace instead of just clicking an arbitrary catch-all button for one of the three mana type every 10ish years. not every country in the world was researching the same thing at the same time. additionally, some people have been opposed to the new way ideas are being implemented (less flavor), but fail to realize half the "meta" countries in eu4 all had a mix of something like 5% disc, 15% morale, -10-15% dev cost, etc. if anything, limiting the overlap of national ideas actually improves flavor and allows you to build your country in a less linear way.

I like how the ideas behind this system and the tech system in eu4 always felt kinda bad with how linear it was but it feels like pdx is creating non linearity by making 1000+ techs that ultimately dont do much. A tech for +1% tax efficiency??? I think that they can half the number of techs and half research speed and that would make this system a lot better. Also love it that some techs have prerequisites. Johan said that horse riding for example requires horses in market. Even if national ideas dont stand out as much it feels like tech isnt very railroaded

Why is it better better, with half the techs and double their yield? I have no problem with more frequent advances, but with small bonuses.

if some technology is randomize i think they should add a fixed option, because things like speedruns just get more annoying with rng, where the player restart the game 10x until it is decent

The tech tree is actually most similar to Age of Empires 2 where countries have different techs they can unlock

Prussia's armies are going to advance on the fields quicker then the state will on the paper. I hope they run the advancements like in stellaris *that way tall croatia can chill And if there is no Balkan formable, then that's worth fighting for.

Isn't the relative simplicity of Eu4 the main reason it's played quite a lot in multiplayer? I really worry that the complexity of eu5 might make it less interesting outside of singleplayer campaigns.

Look at the post at the top "today we talk about what will replace the Technology Levels and National Ideas of EU4." Way to comfirm it is EU5 without saying it is EU5.

One of my biggest beefs with this new system is that you only get 3 choices per age and that they are age specific, making it so that there is a smaller mix and match of the "idea groups" in a way you want as a player.

Mostly because there's one optimal way to play EU4, and the rest of the game has less depth in terms of what's viable

Alright. So, no mana, no dev, no levels of technologies and no ideas sets, including national ideas, no culture shifts and tag switching, no blobbing and modifiers stacking. Instead we're being given the automated economy and technological advances so we could enjoy 3D models while game plays itself. Basically every Vic3 generic run.

Bit of a boring system to me, 5%, 10% bonuses e.t.c, eh, just hoped for something a better and personally I prefer the idea system over this on a glance.

The idea system is literally 5-20% Boni😂 The new system is better because you can now adapt freely and form you nation how you like it. In the old system you can get some useless bonus like lets say embargo efficency even tho it doesnt fit the realities of your run. Now you can adapt and choose the boni you need and have a more naturally developing nation.

For people who feel bad for Imperator Rome not getting continuation, I might announce: Imperator was never meant to be a whole game, it was a platform to test new mechanics for EU5. Just like March of the Eagles was for test of EU4 mechanics

@@CARNA6E Yeah, it's never happened to other Paradox games, like Darkest hour, or Sengoku, or March of the eagles. Fully functional well developed games, with thorough mechanics, not a grand playtest before releasing a real game one year later, suuuuuure.

I like the new system of ideas being interspersed with tech. Based on what this is saying, I hope we'll be seeing a return of some culture-based generic idea sets for nations that don't have unique ideas, rather than those nations having no flavor at all. I absolutely don't like the idea that advancements could be randomized in any way. There's already too much restarting at the start of the game for rng, especially in EU4. Making a core mechanic for building your nation RNG, especially when it's not right at the start is just a bad idea. That's going to encourage people to alt+f4 repeatedly in singleplayer rather than just play and enjoy the game or leave multiplayer games altogether if they just roll into terrible idea rng and their opponents don't.

I said it before and i want to repeat it. The loss of modifier stacking, forming different nations and wild stuff you could do is a big one. I could see eu5 becoming less interesting once you have seen most things once because so far you have so little customication for your nation

@@afridge8608 either a special estate (like clergymen) or be tied to an absolute amount of literate pops (with logarithmic or root scaling so big states have an advantage but not overwhelming).

Countries losing a lot of flavor with this system. National ideas helped differentiate the countries (via limitations). Now with countries sharing 95%+ of the same generic "advances," there will be a great deal of sameness. Unless the unique advances are extremely OP (to encourage differentiation), there will be an identical meta for pretty much all countries.

not many national ideas were really unique. And based on what Johan is saying, the new system will work very similarly if we have type of bonuses in mind + we will get unique advances for cultures, religions and governments. How is that less differentiated compared to linear tech system of eu4?

A +15% morale modifier doesn’t create unique gameplay, apart from the fact that it’s completely unfair towards nations with less OP ideas. For the few that actually do (coast raiding, deus vult and others that actively change the gameplay) you’ve got like a hundred i don’t know... +10% caravan power or whatever
