A firmware update has been released that addresses the HDR color calibration and gamma issues that were noted in this review. Version MCM104 dated 31 May 2023. The firmware update is posted on the Asus website support page for this monitor. Good luck!

The heatsink is on the driver chip, has almost no effect on the panel temp. The heatsink+venting holes have both combined 5% lower temperatures. The reason why it's brighter is because asus is less cautious, not because of the heatsink. Eotf is an issue with the 42" asus oled also, they haven't fixed eotf for half a year on that. I wouldn't hold my breath on asus fixing eotf Edit: also no burn in warranty and no BFI (it is after all aimed at competitive gamers) - it boggles my mind.

Great point on the UI colors at the tail end of the video. On my, now 7-year old, LG E6 OLED the first signs of burn-in were absolutely the WebOS UI elements. In the version of WebOS that TV uses UI navigation uses the colored mutli-function buttons and leaves the UI elements on the screen and will you know it, the only part of that that has burned in is the red button which incidentally was on the screen most of the time. After that, the RU-vid logo started to appear (oddly enough I've been spared the Netflix logo). First time this appeared was 3 years ago, now the display uniformity is starting to fall apart as well, which is the real issue of burn-in and not logos since this can't be mitigated quite as easily as some parts of the screen just get used more in the framing and have to output a higher average luminance level than other parts. Most of the pixels affected by this are situated around the rule of thirds/golden ratio. Something you can clearly demonstrate by displaying full-screen magenta, showing horizontal lines of pixels around the 1/3rd and 2/3rd mark, that are no longer outputting the same luminance as the other pixels on this panel and this shows a drop off on the far edges of the display (that get used less often). You can also see more of these dead pixels in the center of the display and some spots along the vertical slices of the rule of third. Basically, displaying the aformentioned full-screen magenta shows you a heatmap of which parts of the panel have been outputting most of the light. Note however, that this TV doesn't employ any static logo dimming algorithm and maybe that alleviates some of those problems. It does have pixel shift, which was supposed to mitigate this issue, but it seems that LG realized the issue with bright logos as they introduces the static logo dimming algorithm in the following year.
@djayjp
@djayjp Год назад
Obviously running the pixel refresh process doesn't help these issues as the burn in is permanent right?
@hugevibez
@hugevibez Год назад

@@djayjp Yeah older OLED's were more prone of course. They've gotten far better of course but can still get burn it. I bet the new OLED TV's will last at least 5-8 years now before it happens. If I got at least 5 years, I'd be perfectly happy. I just bought the LG C2 few months back. Got it at the time for $1700 65 inch version so if I get 5 years, I Can;t complain.
@hugevibez
@hugevibez Год назад
@@wombat5252 I think you don't have those UI elements constantly on the screen anymore, plus there's the logo luminance adjustment algorithm saving your display from the youtube logo. The uniformity issues you can only see on full screen with certain colors and a trained eye. Maybe I can see it in other scenes too or it's just placebo. Hell in a lot of scenes even the logo burn in doesn't show up clearly*. At any rate it's not quite as big an issue as it might read. Sadly I don't think OLEDs are gonna last a very long time either. *It looks different than I imagined it would look. It's not an image burned in to the panel per sé, it's more like the exact spot and shape of the logo doesn't get the same brightness as the rest of the panel. For the uniformity now imagine just an organic detoration of the panel where certain parts are just darker, you can't really see it in normal scenes. Only with very bright colors it becomes an issue. Still for the price of mine and the time it lasted certainly unacceptable, but for a lower price and a longer time without quite as intrusive logo burn in certainly much less of an issue. I know I paid early adopter fee, and I did enjoy having an oled tv many years before it became the norm. It was worth it in the end, since I had waited for OLED technology in TVs for so long.

As soon as you said the Asus monitor doesn't support HDMI 2.1, that was the end of it for me. The LG 27 OLED has 2 HDMI 2.1 ports, and both support 1440p 240hz AND 4K120 natively (it downscales the 4K image to 1440p). Curious how some new 2023 OLEDs + MLA + heatsink displays have a maximum brightness value of..... the same as my 2019 LG B9, a 4 year old midrange OLED that when new was considered to be pretty average in terms of HDR brightness

Hey All - Quick Review of Asus PG27AQDM OLED (I own x 2) MP Verdict - Absolutely, Great Monitor! Response, Colours, Refresh rate and brightness are superb. SP Verdict - Absolutely No Way! Matte coating kills Immersion. It is way stronger and worse than anyone have said so far. Any white/light colours show very strong film of grainy, uneven coating. Advice - Unless you're playing colour intensive MP only, wait for Glossy finish and then 100% buy. I will sell both of mine as soon as that happens and do the same. I stopped all SP games because of how bad it really is. RDR2 starts in snowy mountains, and I had to stop on 3rd mission because of how bad the coating made overall quality of the game. You are welcome.

The reason the Asus monitor gets up to 250 nits isn't because Asus added better cooling. In fact, the extra cooling doesn't do anything for the panel, and overall is only a 5% increase in cooling performance. Asus is simply running the panel HARD, while LG is running it at it's normal operating brightness. The reason QD-OLED can run up to 250 nits full-white screen easier than LG's WOLED is because it simply has less layers through which brightness must penetrate, and is easier and more efficient than WOLED. Essentially, while the pixels provide up to 250 nits brightness, that brightness is easier to produce, requires less voltage and generates less heat compared to 250 nits on a WOLED display. If you want brighter OLED panels, you will simply have to wait. The 2024 variants will not only be better as they're next gen, the WOLED version will also reach up to 275 nits full white panel brightness and peak 1300 nits. QD-OLED will be brighter, but the details aren't known yet. We may possibly see 350-400 nits full white QD-OLED by 2024 to 2025.

OLED tech has had 10 entire years to mature. If it isn't figured out by now, it never will be. The thing holding it back is too much brightness will cause burn-in, no matter what. No matter the heatsink. No matter if W or QD OLED. Next year nothing will change. The answer is MicroLED or just miniLED if you want true HDR with bright objects larger than 10% windows without aggressive ABL. Both Tech still 5-10yrs away from actually being optimized and perfect. But QDOLED has peaked sadly.
@andrewmorris3479
@andrewmorris3479 Год назад
My 15.6” QHD 240Hz Samsung OLED hits just just shy of 400 nits full field white but they are power hogs with 100% APL so it’ll be hard to hit that figure on a 34” ultrawide but I’m sure they’ll figure it out.
@ameserich

Akctually 🤓 the reason QD-OLED is brighter is because they use QuantumDot Color Converter instead of WOLEDs which use conventional Color Filter
@ameserich
@ameserich Год назад
@@BangSkeeet QD-OLED is the latest development on OLEDs and even this new tech couldnt fix the problem, the only remaining upgrade for OLED is to use Phospor Blue which should be able to push full screen brightness to 400nits but it wont fix the problem. ABL would still kick in possibly dropping upto 200-300nits. Hehe OLED is still OLED In the case of MicroLED im also kinda not convinced. Since the LED are too small they will be less efficient and because they are small they will have shorter life span right? On the LCD/MiniLED front. Upgrades such as use of QuantumDot Color Filter and OD-Zero may be needed to improve translucense to completely eliminate blooming. Yknow less backlight light not only means efficiency it also means higher native contrast ratio and less off-angle blooming, but all of this comes at a cost and i mean literally money wise. While this could become way cheaper than OLED and MicroLED, they will need to make changes on how they manufacture LCDs and initial adoption of this tech for mass market will be expensive
@BangSkeeet
@BangSkeeet Год назад
@@andrewmorris3479 The best OLED display right now is the iPhone's 14 ProMax OLED. Can sustain 2300 nits outside and its fullscreen is something like a uniform 1000 nits. Doubt the burn-in is any better (might be worse) and the rec2020 may not be as good as QD-OLED, but it still packs a great punch in contrast/highlights in HDR content. It's also extremely accurate, especially SDR reference. Still not as good as a flagship miniLED HDR showcases like a Samsung or Hisense U8H when playing it side by side - especially watching things that has higher APL and explosions. OLED has its specific dark room dark content niche which it has mastered. miniLED in 2023 is a jack of all trades, a brown belt in ever HDR spec needed for the full HDR experience. OLED has peaked.
