so in conclusion, to have the least heat in your car: when parked: put up the reflector on the windshield as well as cracking your windows slightly when about to hop in: open the 2 front doors and swing one of the doors continuously for a hot minute (pun intended) after hopping in: turn on the AC and roll up all the windows.

I would suggest closing the windows pretty quickly after the car has been rolling for a bit, probably around the time that the temp inside the car is the same as outside if you can help it. I usually roll the windows up after just a minute or less.

It drives me a little crazy that they left the door open while trying to take a post reading. Introduces so many variables that it basically nullifies the results. Why not leave the thermometer in the car viewable from thru the glass?
@trevorwotring3945

Exactly... when I saw them doing this I was like the results could be all over the place like if the wind direction picked up a little bit while the door was open could vastly change the results
@drew9453
@drew9453 2 года назад
They specifically said that they did that to match real life instances. People would normally get in the car and leave the door open. It's almost as if you guys didn't even actually watch the video lol
@johnc4236
@johnc4236 Год назад
@@drew9453 yeah I know what they said, and I watched what they did. what I'm saying is it's a poor method. it introduces too many variables (e.g. a single breeze will invalidate the entire dataset). when doing testing of this sort, you're not trying to replicate real-life conditions, you're trying to isolate variables to see what works.

All interiors matter. But yeah, I had a Saturn with a black interior, and when I had to have the dash out anyway, I used a vinyl paint to redo it in light beige with trim to match the exterior, then put a light colored steering wheel and shifter cover on. Might not have been a huge ambient difference, but touching the wheel and shifter was a lot less painful. And it looked sharp: a couple other Saturn owners asked if it was a factory option.

so one of those arizona people here... What I usually do (because my current car has a sunroof) is have that tipped open (not slid open but lifted) and then crack the (manual) cover so that MOST of the sunroof is covered, but there is a gap for the hot air at the roof to go straight up out the sunroof crack. That, along with the window reflector, help make sure that I can touch the steering wheel in the summer. :) Cracking the windows is often used in conjunction with the other two techniques, along with the rapid "waving" of the door, like you showed.

Not to sound like the smart guy here, but your testing was skewed. You should have had the temp guages in the cars the whole time. Going into the cars afterward and holding the gauges up while the temp increased isn't very accurate. I crack my windows, and use a shade visor (which you didn't do) so I know it makes a huge difference from when I didn't do either of those things. Please redo your experiment, because I do enjoy your show, and so do 12.5 million other people.

I've always wondered about the reflectors in the windshield. Though it is keeping the sunlight off the seats/dashboard, the heat is still entering in through the glass and getting trapped inside the vehicle. I bet if you threw a thermometer between the reflector and the glass, you'd find the hottest temps of all.
@johndimech8945
@johndimech8945 3 года назад
Masca Trails Absolutely. I was thinking the same. And, I wish they would have tried putting the reflected on the outside of the windshield. I'm sure that would have recorded the the lowest temperature of all the tested scenarios done with windows up.
@Whitbypoppers
@Whitbypoppers 3 года назад
I try to park in the shade. The reflector is useful in keeping light off the dashboard shelf under the windshield. That shelf radiates a lot of heat into the cabin. When starting out I open the windows fully for one minute because cabin air is always hotter than the ambient air when a car has been sitting in the sun. The a/c is on from the get-go, so that by the time you close your windows, the internal ductwork will be cool.
